Virtual reality and games lead fight against addiction
A bold push to combat addiction using virtual reality and interactive games took centre stage at the 'Maan (Together) for Security Awareness' exhibition launched by the Southern Governorate. Held under the guidance of His Highness Southern Governor Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Khalifa, the event aimed to deepen public engagement on community safety and drug prevention.
Organised in cooperation with the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, the exhibition was hosted at the Askar Sports Complex and featured awareness sections targeting youth.
Visitors explored virtual reality simulations and electronic games designed to build decision-making skills and resilience among young people.
A key feature was the anti-drug section, which highlighted the risks of narcotics and introduced the 'Recovery' programme, part of the National Anti-Drug Plan.
The event attracted participants from various Interior Ministry departments and local communities, reflecting a broad push for neighbourhood-level engagement.
Healthy city goals
The exhibition also supports the Southern Governorate's effort to earn recognition as a healthy city, by aligning public safety initiatives with health and well-being strategies.
Through creative and tech-driven outreach, the governorate continues to promote positive behaviour among youth and strengthen community-based prevention efforts.

H.E. Interior Minister sets sights on full national coverage
TDT | Manama Bahrain has moved a step closer to becoming a fully WHO-accredited 'Healthy Cities' nation after Muharraq and Northern Governorates received official recognition under the global programme. Interior Minister His Excellency General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa received the accreditation certificates from Lieutenant-General H.E. Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, President of the Supreme Council of Health, and Health Minister H.E. Dr. Jalila bint Al Sayed Jawad Hassan during a meeting in Manama. He congratulated the governorates on what he described as a national achievement, citing the effort of local communities and officials in meeting WHO's comprehensive criteria. The Interior Minister directed the Southern Governorate to intensify its work to meet international standards, in a bid to declare all of Bahrain's governorates as officially recognised healthy zones. He stressed that the Healthy Cities Project is aligned with Bahrain's sustainable development goals and reflects its broader push for community-led health and wellbeing under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The Northern Governorate received its WHO accreditation following an evaluation visit in November 2024. Muharraq passed its assessment in February 2025.

Passenger Dies Mid-Flight
TDT | Manama A 65-year-old man from Kerala died yesterday after suffering a medical emergency on board a Kuwait-bound flight that was diverted to Bahrain. Flight Interrupted The passenger, Abdul Salam, a businessman based in Kuwait, was travelling on Air India Express flight IX 493 from Kannur to Kuwait when he began experiencing severe chest pain mid-air. The crew promptly alerted authorities, and the flight was diverted to Bahrain International Airport for urgent medical assistance. Upon landing, he was immediately transferred to King Hamad University Hospital. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Abdul Salam was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A relative travelling with him also disembarked in Bahrain and remained by his side through the ordeal. Salam was a native of Nileshwaram in Kerala's Kasaragod district. Community Mourns News of his passing has resonated within Bahrain's Malayali expatriate community, many of whom routinely travel the same Gulf routes for work or family reunions. Community members are reportedly assisting with repatriation arrangements. Funeral and repatriation details are being coordinated by relatives with the support of volunteers.
