Navy denies viral claim of Malaysian-Philippine standoff

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has dismissed as false a YouTube video claiming tensions between Malaysian and Philippine naval forces.
The RMN said the 12-minute 51-second video was clearly intended to tarnish the longstanding defence and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
"No incident as depicted in the video took place.
"The spread of such false information has the potential to spark controversy and erode public confidence in the RMN's role, particularly in safeguarding the nation's maritime sovereignty," it said in a statement.
It said that disseminating false information of this nature could undermine peace and stability in the region and was seen as contributing to certain political or strategic agendas.
"The RMN remains committed to ensuring the continued safety and sovereignty of the nation's waters," it said.
The public was urged not to spread unverified information or make speculative claims that could cause confusion, in the interest of preserving global peace.
The video, sighted by the New Straits Times, claimed that the RMN had been locked in a naval standoff with the Philippines near Sabah on Aug 11.

Don't take matters into your own hands, AGC urges public over flag issue

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) is advising the public to leave any action on flag-related issues to authorities and not take matters into their own hands. "This includes raiding the premises of the suspected parties, sharing personal information or making reckless accusations on social media, provoking or threatening the individuals or organisations involved and taking over the role of authorities, such as ordering the flag to be taken down or seizing the materials involved without legal authority. "All complaints or related information should be channelled to the authorities for appropriate action in accordance with the principle of the rule of law," the AGC said in a statement on Friday (Aug 15). The AGC also said legal action could be taken against any improper installation or display of the Malaysian flag that could cause confusion, misunderstanding or public concern. The AGC said all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty and for complying with the laws and guidelines in effect regarding its use. "The AGC views seriously any act of displaying, hoisting, or installing the Malaysian flag in a disorderly or improper manner," the statement said. The AGC noted that among the reported incidents of the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down were at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, and at a school in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan. Other incidents included the display of an incomplete Malaysian flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results report book and on the official social media accounts of several local newspapers. – Bernama
