At the start of the offseason, it took just a couple of weeks for the Philadelphia Eagles to lose several key edge rushers from their Super Bowl roster.

Bryce Huff, Brandon Graham, and Josh Sweat have all left the organization for various reasons. Their departures have raised significant concerns for the team's top-ranked defense.
But that doesn't mean Philadelphia's weakness will be at edge rusher this year.
On paper - and amid trade speculation regarding big-name NFL contract holdouts T.J. Watt in Pittsburgh and Trey Hendrickson in Cincinnati - hey have plenty of stars to make up for some of their losses.
Philadelphia at this time has a young and energetic group, including third-year edge rusher Nolan Smith, second-year phenom Jalyx Hunt, and their collection of free agent pickups like Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari.

In the case of Smith and Hunt, their development took a massive turn for the better during their playoff run last season. The Georgia product recorded four sacks during Philadelphia's run to the title. Hunt, meanwhile, recorded 1.5 sacks, including a half-sack in Super Bowl LIX.
If both Hunt and Smith can find a way to build on their playoff success, the Eagles' biggest perceived question mark or "weakness'' may not be as weak as originally thought.
Add in Uche and Ojulari, two veterans with a penchant for rushing the passer, and the Eagles' defensive line could be just as good as they were last season.
It's customary with any team for a position group that lost three quality veterans in free agency to take a step back.

But Philadelphia has developed a reputation for, well ... development.
A superstar addition (at a price tag of over $30 million APY) would be appealing. But ...
The Super Bowl champs generally seem equipped to move past their offseason losses and now likely believe they have the next-gen players on the roster with the ability to push for a repeat.

Pivetta's dominant outing and Merrill's clutch hit propel Padres to sixth straight win

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta gave up one hit and one run in seven innings, Jackson Merrill drove in two runs, and the San Diego Padres won their sixth game in a row, 4-1 over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Pivetta (11-3) struck out five and did not give up a walk. His only blemish was a solo homer by Willson Contreras in the fifth that gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. San Diego answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth in large part to two errors that led to three unearned runs. With Jake Cronenworth at first and one out, Jose Iglesias hit a slow grounder to third baseman Nolan Gorman, whose wide throw hit first baseman Contreras' glove and rolled away. Cronenworth went to third and scored when Contreras' throw to Gorman skipped away. Elias Díaz singled in Iglesias and four batters later, Merrill hit a two-out single up the middle against Matt Svanson. Robert Suarez notched his major league-best 31st save with a scoreless ninth. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (6-9) pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and four runs (one earned). Key moment Padres reliever Mason Miller, acquired at the trade deadline on Thursday from the Athletics, trotted in from the bullpen in the eighth inning to roaring applause from the soldout Petco Park crowd for his first appearance with San Diego. Miller got Yohel Pozo to ground into a double play with one out and runners at the corners to get out of the inning unscathed. Key stat The Cardinals have lost five of their last six games. In those five loses, St. Louis has scored a combined four runs. Up next The Cardinals' RHP Michael McGreevy (2-2, 4.91 ERA) takes the hill in game two of the series Saturday night versus Padres' RHP Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.65). ___ AP MLB: Richard J. Ice hockey fans, players excited for World Juniors tournament coming to Minnesota

Minnesota hockey fans get an extra gift this holiday season. The World Juniors is coming to the state of hockey. "Like no other," described defenseman Logan Hensler. "Happens once a year. It's always on TV. People are always watching, talking about it. There's a ton of attention to it. It's a pretty cool experience." Hensler has been there before. The defenseman from Woodbury took gold last January. Now, he's trying to repeat as a large, talented group tangle for a roster spot on Team USA. "Your compete, your discipline. All around play. You get pushed every day by these guys," said Hensler. "It's just important you keep up and keep going. Push through." Hensler's last few months have been his most accomplished in hockey. He won the most recent World Juniors gold and was then selected 23rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft in June. "Dream come true," remembered Hensler. "Got there, it was a great experience. The moment I got picked was kind of a blur. Kind of a blackout moment. Really special. Great organization. Just happy my family was there to witness it." Hensler, the top Minnesotan selected in 2025, will be a sophomore with the Badgers this winter. But it might not be long before he trades red and white for Ottawa's colors. "This next coming year I'm going back to Wisconsin," said Hensler. "A big thing for me is taking it year by year. Just gonna take this year, see how it goes. See how I grow as a player. I think it'll be a lot of growing. So it'll be fun." Note: The above video first aired on Jan. 5, 2025.
