BRUSSELS:
Pakistan, by developing its own internal integration through free trade agreements and economic partnership agreements with Central Asian Republics (CARs) including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and most importantly with China, can provide refuge at times when other markets suffer.
The free flow of products and people across country borders increases overall economic efficiency, widens consumer choices, decreases production costs and enables faster economic growth. It contributes to improved living standards and increased investment opportunities.
As total trade flow increases, liquidity increases. With an increase in liquidity comes a decrease in volatility, which is eventually followed by broader, deeper markets with an improving risk profile.
So, while optimal policy prescriptions within all four grand kingdoms of macroeconomics (fiscal policy, monetary policy, income policy and trade policy) are desirable, effective trade policy can be especially important for fueling economic growth and equity market outperformance.
Free trade among Central Asian countries and Pakistan will make the region more competitive and more productive. By reducing arbitrary government constraints on trade flows, businesses enjoy increased market access and can exploit economies of scale and other local advantages, allowing them to purchase resources from the cheapest suppliers and locate manufacturing operations where they are most efficient.
Expansion of free trade in Southeast Asia among member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is an example to follow. Total trade (exports and imports) in the Asean bloc has surged since 2002-03, when the Asean Free Trade Area drastically reduced tariffs within the region.
Today, total trade stands at more than $750 billion and foreign direct investment (FDI) above $200 billion. Furthermore, trade within the Asean bloc represents 60% of their total trade and their annual growth rates for the last two decades have averaged between 8% and 10%.
The Asean region has shown that they understand trade dynamics and a major stimulus to growth. Besides the Asean-China free trade agreement, they also have free trade deals with India, South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Included in the Asean-China free trade deal is an agreement on FDI. The agreement stipulates that there will be similar transparency and legal protection for Chinese companies in the Asean region as those granted to member countries of the bloc. This simply makes it easier for capital to flow from China to the Asean region.
The net inflow of FDI into Asean countries from China has been substantially positive since the start of tariff reductions in 2005. It is thus much easier for companies to seek competitive advantages within the region, leading to increased investment and ultimately higher growth.
It is high time that Pakistan and Central Asian countries with China create a similar regional free trade agreement that involves reduction or elimination of tariffs and decreased regulations on investments and services. There are investment opportunities across the board as trade acceleration increases the pace of economic growth.
Currently, Pakistan's trade with CARs is between $400-500 million annually and is mostly via Afghanistan. This should not be the case. Pakistan shares deep cultural and historical ties with Central Asian states since centuries and therefore it is imperative to enhance mutual interest in regional trade connectivity.
Additionally, Pakistan's geographical location would offer CARs the potential to integrate their transit trade routes via Sost-Khunjerab in Gilgit-Baltistan all the way down to Gwadar and Karachi ports on the Arabian Sea.
Kashgar, located in southwestern Xinjiang, China is well positioned to become a major regional logistic hub for Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) and can be used for access to and from all neighbouring Central Asian countries and integrate with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The regional land route connectivity under TIR holds the key to diversifying Pakistan's total trade and unlocking markets in Central Asia. This quicker mode of transportation for regional connectivity can be undertaken by National Logistics Corporation (NLC) and others under TIR and Multimodal conventions.
The road route can also be connected for transshipment by rail towards Pakistani ports, which are currently underutilised, then by sea towards their final destinations and vice versa. As trade volumes continue to rise, more and more transit/TIR hubs will emerge within CARs and Pakistan, at last fulfilling the crucial component of CPEC.

Beijing launches AI ‘RoboBrain' to power next generation of humanoid robots

PHOTO: REUTERS Listen to article China has taken a significant step forward in its race to lead global robotics innovation with the unveiling of RoboBrain 2.0 — an open-source artificial intelligence model designed to serve as the cognitive core of humanoid robots. The model was launched on Friday by the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI), a leading non-profit research institution, during its annual conference in the Chinese capital. The release marks a milestone in China's efforts to build smarter and more autonomous machines for its fast-growing robotics sector. Described by BAAI director Wang Zhongyuan as the world's most powerful open-source AI model tailored for robotics, RoboBrain 2.0 promises to enhance a robot's spatial perception and task-planning capabilities. Compared to its earlier version introduced just three months ago, the upgraded model is reported to operate 17% faster and with 74% higher accuracy. 'Currently, we are partnering with over 20 leading companies and are open to new collaborations to drive growth in the embodied intelligence industry,' Wang told attendees at the Zhiyuan Institute — BAAI's local moniker. The enhanced spatial intelligence enables robots to more accurately interpret their surroundings and judge distances, while improved planning algorithms allow them to autonomously deconstruct complex tasks into simpler, executable steps. RoboBrain 2.0 is part of BAAI's broader Wujie model suite, which also includes RoboOS 2.0 — a cloud-based distribution platform for robotics AI — and Emu3, a multimodal system capable of processing and generating text, images, and video. The model's launch comes amid intensifying competition in China's robotics landscape. Earlier this year, the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre introduced its own general-purpose platform, Hui Si Kai Wu, which it envisions as the Android equivalent for humanoid robots. The centre made headlines in April after its Tien Kung humanoid robot completed a half-marathon in Beijing. BAAI has emerged as a pioneer in open-source large language models and has played a key role in China's generative AI boom. Many of its alumni have gone on to found successful AI start-ups. Despite being added to the US Entity List in March — which restricts access to American technology — the institute continues to push forward, with Wang calling the decision 'a mistake' and lobbying for its reversal. In a show of resilience and ambition, BAAI also announced a new strategic partnership with the Hong Kong Investment Corporation to promote innovation through joint initiatives in talent development, technology exchange, and venture capital. This year's BAAI Conference drew more than 100 global AI researchers and over 200 industry experts, including leaders from major Chinese tech firms such as Baidu, Huawei, and Tencent, alongside robotics-focused start-ups like Unitree Robotics, Zhipu AI, and Shengshu AI. As China accelerates its quest to develop commercially viable humanoid robots, BAAI's open-source approach could help democratise access to high-performing AI systems — and set the foundation for a new generation of intelligent machines.

US, China set for trade talks in London on Monday

WASHINGTON: Three of US President Donald Trump's top aides will meet with their Chinese counterparts in London on Monday for talks aimed at resolving a trade dispute between the world's two largest economies that has kept global markets on edge. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will represent the United States in the talks, Trump announced in a post on his Truth Social platform without providing further details. China's foreign ministry said on Saturday that vice premier He Lifeng will be in the United Kingdom between June 8 and June 13, adding that the first meeting of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism would be held during this visit. 'The meeting should go very well,' Trump wrote. Trump spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday in a rare leader-to-leader call amid weeks of brewing trade tensions and a dispute over critical minerals. Trump says fresh US-China trade talks in London next week Trump and Xi agreed to visit one another and asked their staffs to hold talks in the meantime. Both countries are under pressure to relieve tensions, with the global economy under pressure over Chinese control over the rare earth mineral exports of which it is the dominant producer and investors more broadly anxious about Trump's wider effort to impose tariffs on goods from most US trading partners. China, meanwhile, has seen its own supply of key US imports like chip-design software and nuclear plant parts curtailed. The countries struck a 90-day deal on May 12 in Geneva to roll back some of the triple-digit, tit-for-tat tariffs they had placed on each other since Trump returned to the presidency in January. That preliminary deal sparked a global relief rally in stock markets, and US indexes that had been in or near bear market levels have recouped the lion's share of their losses. The S&P 500 stock index, which at its lowest point in early April was down nearly 18% after Trump unveiled his sweeping 'Liberation Day' tariffs on goods from across the globe, is now only about 2% below its record high from mid-February. The final third of that rally followed the US-China truce struck in Geneva. Trump has repeatedly threatened an array of punitive measures on trading partners, only to revoke some of them at the last minute. The on-again, off-again approach has baffled world leaders and spooked business executives. China sees mineral exports as a source of leverage. Halting those exports could put domestic political pressure on the Republican US president if economic growth sags because companies cannot make mineral-powered products. In recent years, US officials have identified China as its top geopolitical rival and the only country in the world able to challenge the United States economically and militarily.

Oil climbs over $1 onUS-China talks

Listen to article Brent crude rose more than $1 a barrel on Friday morning and oil prices were on track for their first weekly gain in three weeks after US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping resumed trade talks, raising hopes for growth and stronger demand in the world's two largest economies. Brent crude futures gained $1.50, or 1.61%, to $66.39 a barrel by 1349 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude climbed $1.02, or 1.61%, to $64.39. On a weekly basis, both benchmarks were on track to settle higher after declining for two straight weeks. Brent has advanced 2.75% this week, while WTI is trading 4.9% higher. China's official Xinhua news agency said trade talks between Xi and Trump took place at Washington's request on Thursday. Trump said the call had led to a "very positive conclusion", adding the US was "in very good shape with China and the trade deal". Canada also continued trade talks with the US, with Prime Minister Mark Carney in direct contact with Trump, according to Industry Minister Melanie Joly. The oil market continued to swing with news on tariff negotiations and data showing how trade uncertainty and the impact of the US levies are flowing through into the global economy. "The potential for increased US sanctions in Venezuela to limit crude exports and the potential for an Israeli strike on Iranian infrastructure add to upside risks for prices," analysts at BMI, a Fitch affiliate, said in a note on Friday. "But both weaker demand for oil and increased production from both OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers will add to downside price pressures in the coming quarters." Top exporter Saudi Arabia cut its July crude prices for Asia to near two-month lows. That was a smaller price reduction than expected after OPEC+ agreed to ramp up output by 411,000 barrels per day in July. The kingdom had been pushing for a bigger output hike, part of a broader strategy to win back market share and discipline over-producers in OPEC+, which groups the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia. "The market looks balanced in 2Q/3Q on our estimates as oil demand rises in summer and peaks in July-August, matching supply increases from OPEC+," HSBC said in a note.
