Reds star Elly De La Cruz hits home run vs Cubs after death of sister
Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz hit an emotional home run on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs and paid tribute to his sister, who he learned died the day before the game.
De La Cruz hit a two-run home run and crossed the plate twice in the Reds' 7-3 loss to the Cubs.
Reds manager Terry Francona said the shortstop wanted to play in the game despite dealing with the emotions from the death of his sister, Genelis.
"He takes so much pride in being available," Francona said. "Guys like that, Carlos Santana in Cleveland was very similar, and for a kid that's that young, that's an admirable trait."
Francona added that times like these provide a good reminder about what is "really important."
"We care so much about playing a game and winning, but in a hurry you're reminded of what's really important," Francona said. "So I think everybody kind of kept their head on a swivel with him today, just trying to take care of him."
De La Cruz's homer came off of Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon in the top of the sixth. As he crossed home plate, he pointed to the sky and made a heart with his hands.
He declined to speak to the media after the game, and the Reds did not provide more details about her death, citing the player's wishes.
The Dominican Republic's Z101 Digital reported that Genelis died on Saturday after a long health battle.
De La Cruz is hitting .258 with an OPS of .786 in 60 games for the Reds this season. He has 12 home runs and 42 RBI in that span.
Cincinnati fell to 29-31 with the loss to the Cubs.

San Francisco ended a stretch of 16 straight games scoring four or fewer runs. Gavin Sheets hit a two-run triple in the first then singled in two more runs in the fifth for San Diego, which had a pair of 10-inning wins to start the four-game series. Twins pitcher Pablo López to miss 8-12 weeks with Grade 2 teres major muscle strain
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — He's not done for the season, but Pablo López could miss up to three months. The Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday night that their frontline starting pitcher would miss 8-12 weeks with a teres major muscle strain in his throwing shoulder. An MRI revealed that López suffered a Grade 2 strain during Tuesday's victory, a contest he exited after pitching five innings. Advertisement At the minimum, López won't throw a baseball for the next four weeks, the team said in a statement. López is 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings this season. 'The slightest idea of thinking that I would miss time makes me really sad,' López said late Tuesday. 'Devastates me. But that's what we do.' López's injury is the same that ended Joe Ryan's 2024 season prematurely, though his occurred Aug. 7. Even with the late occurrence, the Twins hoped Ryan might be able to return to pitch in some capacity if the team reached the playoffs, a point made moot by a season-ending collapse that left them out of the postseason. López exited Tuesday's game after throwing three warmup pitches before the start of the sixth inning. The right-hander noticed tightness in his throwing shoulder during a fifth-inning showdown with Athletics slugger Brent Rooker, but completed the inning. Rather than warm up with maximum intensity, López threw at a much lower rate and quickly determined he needed to exit the game. Still, López didn't believe there was an acute incident and hoped he would escape without a serious injury. 'In my head I'm like, 'Well, if it feels that way, if I tried to make a max effort throw to get the inning started, who knows what could happen?'' López said. 'Those split-second scenarios where your head is just like, you start hearing both sides. 'Oh, just power through it, it's nothing,' or 'it could be something terrible.' It sucks.' Losing López for two to three months is a serious roadblock for the Twins, who entered Wednesday tied for the third-best record in the American League after going 20-9 since the start of May. The team's starting rotation entered Wednesday with a 3.43 ERA, the fifth-best in the majors. The Twins are set to promote second-year pitcher David Festa to replace López and start him in Thursday's series finale against the Athletics. Festa made three starts earlier this season when López went on the IL in April with a right hamstring strain, posting a 1.38 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 13 innings. Advertisement Festa also gained critical experience as one of three young arms pitching key games for the Twins in 2024 after the rotation suffered injuries to Anthony DeSclafani, Chris Paddack and Ryan. Festa will rejoin a group currently featuring Zebby Matthews, who also was an injury replacement for the Twins a season ago. While Festa, Matthews and Simeon Woods Richardson fought like crazy to provide big innings for a beleaguered rotation, the trio struggled to pitch deep into games, which burned out the Twins bullpen. This time around, the Twins need more innings from Festa and Matthews, who allowed a run in five innings on Wednesday after pitching seven innings in his previous start in Seattle.
