Bahrain to Host Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference on February 19–20

Mohamed Mandour
Under the patronage of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, and in partnership with the Muslim Council of Elders, the Kingdom of Bahrain is set to host the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference on February 19–20.
The conference will take place in Manama and will bring together His Eminence Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, along with more than 400 prominent scholars, religious authorities, leaders, thinkers, intellectuals, and stakeholders from across the globe. Organized by Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Bahrain, and the Muslim Council of Elders, the event will be held under the theme, 'One Nation, One Shared Destiny.'
The conference comes as a response to the call initiated by His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar during the Bahrain Dialogue Forum in November 2022, which emphasized the need to enhance Islamic unity and solidarity. It aims to move beyond rapprochement rhetoric toward a deeper understanding of shared values and challenges, while also laying the foundation for a permanent mechanism for constructive academic dialogue across the Muslim world.
The initiative seeks to unify the diverse components of the Muslim nation, highlight the vast areas of agreement among Muslims, and establish a framework for addressing these areas as a starting point for dialogue among Islamic sects. Additionally, it aims to strengthen the role of scholars and religious authorities in bridging sectarian divides, rejecting hate speech, promoting mutual respect and understanding, and fostering Islamic thought renewal to address causes of division and conflict, shared challenges, and to spotlight successful models in this realm.

Escalation in Gaza, West Bank as Israeli strikes continue amid mounting international criticism

The armed wings of Palestine's Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements said on Saturday they had shelled Israeli military command posts in the Gaza Strip, as tensions on the ground escalated alongside intensifying international criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hamas's Al-Qassam Brigades said it struck an Israeli command-and-control site on the Salah Al-Din axis south of Rafah, while Islamic Jihad's Al-Quds Brigades claimed mortar fire on another command post in Gaza City's Al-Zaytoun neighbourhood. Meanwhile, Israeli media reported the crash of a small military reconnaissance drone in northern Gaza. The Times of Israel said the Skylark 3 drone, manufactured by Elbit Systems, suffered a technical malfunction and 'landed unexpectedly' in Gaza's Al-Rimal district. The Israeli army downplayed the incident, saying there was 'no fear of information leakage.' The drone model has previously crashed in hostile areas. The humanitarian toll in Gaza continued to climb. The Health Ministry reported 11 more deaths from starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, including one child. This brought the total famine-related death toll to 251, among them 108 children. Separately, Gaza's government media office accused Israel of bombing the grounds of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir Al-Balah for the 13th time since the war began, calling it a deliberate assault on the health sector and a violation of international law. Political pressure on Netanyahu is also mounting abroad. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described him as 'a problem in himself,' pledging to use Denmark's upcoming EU presidency to push for sanctions. In comments to Jyllands-Posten, she said her government would back measures ranging from political pressure to trade and research restrictions, citing Israel's 'crossing of boundaries' and the 'catastrophic' humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In a phone call, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul expressed alarm over Israeli policies, warning that rhetoric about a 'Greater Israel' and new settlement plans threatened regional stability. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's rejection of Israel's aid blockade, calling the starvation of Palestinians a grave breach of international law. A joint statement by the foreign ministers of 31 Arab and Muslim states condemned Netanyahu's remarks on 'Greater Israel,' branding them a direct threat to Arab national security and international peace. The statement vowed to pursue policies that support peace while rejecting 'illusions of domination.' Meanwhile, Hamas rejected its inclusion on the UN Secretary-General's blacklist of groups accused of sexual violence in conflict, calling the designation baseless and politically motivated. It argued the listing relied solely on Israeli allegations without independent investigation. With the conflict intensifying on multiple fronts, Netanyahu faces growing isolation abroad and mounting domestic pressure, while humanitarian agencies warn Gaza's crisis will worsen unless a ceasefire is reached to guarantee aid flows and halt settlement expansion.

Over 30 countries condemn Netanyahu's ‘Greater Israel' statements

A joint statement on Friday issued by the foreign ministers of 31 Arab and Islamic countries, as well as the secretaries-general of the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statements regarding his vision for 'Greater Israel.' The joint Arab-Islamic statement said that Netanyahu's statements are a direct threat to Arab national security, state sovereignty, and international security and peace. It further constitutes a gross disregard and blatant violation for the rules of international law and the foundations of international relations. Israel's reliance on ideological and racist illusions threatens to fuel the conflict and threatens regional and international security, the statement warned. It emphasized that Arab and Islamic countries will take all measures to promote peace while respecting international legitimacy and the UN Charter. The statement also utterly condemned approval by Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich for the settlement plan in the E1 area and his 'extremist racist' statements rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state. The ministers' statement also said that 'Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory,' stressing their absolute rejection and condemnation of this settlement plan and all illegal Israeli measures. The statement stressed that this constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution #2334, which condemns all Israeli settlement activities aimed at changing the demographic composition, character, and legal status of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine. The ministers reaffirmed the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice, which emphasized the illegality of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and the need to end it immediately, eliminate its effects, and provide compensation for its damages. Condemning genocide They also warned against the danger of Israel's expansionist intentions aimed at annexing Palestinian territories and the Israeli government's continued settler policy in the occupied West Bank. 'We reject and condemn the crimes of Israeli aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing. We call on the international community to pressure Israel to halt its aggression and withdraw from Gaza Strip in preparation for reconstruction,' the statement reads. It emphasized the need for the State of Palestine to assume governance responsibilities in Gaza Strip, as well as the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, with Arab and international support under the framework of the political program of the Palestine Liberation Organization – the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people – and the policy of one system, one law, and one legitimate weapon. The ministers called on the international community, particularly the permanent members of the Security Council, particularly the US, to assume their legal and moral responsibilities and take immediate action to compel Israel to halt its ongoing aggression against Gaza Strip and its dangerous escalation within the occupied West Bank. Several of the foreign ministers who signed the statement represented the following countries: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco, Algeria, Chad, Bangladesh, the Union of the Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Indonesia, Libya, the Maldives, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Republic of Somalia, Sudan, Turkey, and Yemen, in addition to the Secretary-General of the Arab League, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
