Indian Red Cross Society Centenary Building to be inaugurated in Mangaluru on July 26
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Indian Red Cross Society district unit chairman Shantaram Shetty said it was in 2007 that the then Deputy Commissioner allotted a site for the district unit, which used funds from the sale of blood, CSR funds and donations to construct the four-storey building on the site at a cost of ₹6 crore. The State Red Cross Society granted ₹40 lakh for the building, he said.
The ground floor will feature the district unit's office, a visitors' lounge, a VIP lounge, and a meeting hall. The first floor will have a 300-seater 'Prerana' AC auditorium, which will be used for holding functions, and, training and orientation sessions related to blood donation. The second floor will have a sea-view hall.
Mr. Shetty said space in the cellar of the building will be used to stock materials related to Disaster Management. The society has also planned to utilise the space for some of the district unit's upcoming signature projects.
Mr. Shetty said the Indian Red Cross blood bank has been offering blood to patients at the Government Lady Goschen Hospital free of cost. Inpatients of Government Wenlock Hospital get blood at a 50% concessional rate. It was proposed to offer blood free to patients from below the poverty line.
On July 26, a new app of the district unit will be launched, which will help needy contact blood donors at anytime, he said.

Bakeries, condiments and small enterprises protest against GST notices on July 24
The Karnataka State Association of Bakeries, Condiments and Small Enterprises has organised a protest rally at Freedom Park on Thursday, to protest the 'unscientific' Goods and Services Tax (GST) notices issued by the Commercial Taxes Department to small-scale traders. D.B. Pratap Shetty, president of the association, expressed concern over the GST notices to small-scale businesses like condiments stores, bakeries, milk sellers, vegetable vendors, and others, and said these notices had created a sense of fear among traders. These notices have been issued based on transactions in their UPI payment gateway linked accounts. 'Most of our transactions — over 95% — are through digital payments,' Mr. Shetty said, and warned that if their issues are not sorted out, they will launch a State-wide protest against the UPI payment system. 'We will begin a campaign to break UPI scanners as a mark of protest,' he warned. He alleged that traders with annual transactions between ₹20 lakh and ₹40 lakh are being served notices, which goes against the standard GST norms. While demanding the withdrawal of such notices, the association has demanded that the government allow traders with turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh per year to settle their dues under the presumptive tax scheme by paying a flat 1% tax based on available records.

Govt college to introduce newspaper reading course
Udupi: The Govt First Grade College, Hiriyadka, which was struggling with admissions, is adopting a unique approach this academic year by introducing a set of compulsory add-on courses, including newspaper reading as a subject, to enhance students' career readiness. The college reopened on Monday, a week before the academic calendar of the university. The academic year will commence with a bridge course and an orientation programme outlining all initiatives planned for the year. The orientation will also include sessions on preparing for future careers and life skills, said principal Prof Jayaprakash Shetty. He told TOI that five add-on courses were designed with long-term student development in mind. "These are not fancy courses. They are practical and focused on the future. We noticed that many students do not know how to read a newspaper effectively. We want to guide them on understanding newspaper content, identifying what is relevant for exams, and how to use news as a tool for competitive exam preparation," he said. These add-on courses will be held throughout the academic year, from Monday to Friday, for 45 minutes to an hour after regular classes. One day each week will be dedicated to newspaper reading as a subject. The remaining days will cover job-related information from both the public and private sectors, career guidance sessions, and spoken English classes. Classes will be conducted in three batches based on the year of study, running simultaneously. BCom students will have access to CA and CS foundation courses thrice a week, while BA students will receive training for competitive exams, including subjects like geography that are not part of their regular syllabus. The initiative is being supported by local donors. It may be recalled that the faculty members had volunteered to sponsor students' fees. So far, 20 students have registered under this scheme. Last year, the college's strength was 124. The college also offers postgraduate programmes in MCom and MA Kannada, along with NET coaching. "We are hoping these efforts will boost student strength over time. Faculty interest has driven this initiative, and we plan to host career-oriented fests targeting PU students to improve admissions in the long run," Shetty added. A planning meeting related to the add-on courses was held on Friday.
