A reimagined AIDA comes to Artscape
Directed by Artistic Director Magdalene Minnaar, this reimagining of the iconic opera is done through a lens of Afro-futurism, exploring love, betrayal, and cultural identity in a modern context. The all-South African cast is led by acclaimed soprano Nobulumko Mngxekeza in the title role, alongside rising star Nonhlanhla Yende as Amneris.
Choreographed by Gregory Maqoma and featuring dancers from Jazzart, this production brings emotional intensity and powerful movement to the opera stage, while the 52-member Cape Town Opera Chorus and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kamal Khan, provide the musical backbone. Look forward to a visual feast of geometric set design, immersive lighting and bold costumes.
Aida will be performed in Italian with surtitles in English and isiXhosa. With a soaring score, visionary direction, and a uniquely local creative team, this is one Cape Town opera event you don't want to miss.
Aida runs at the Artscape Opera House where:
Friday 23 May at 7pm
Sunday 25 May at 3pm
Tuesday 27 May at 7pm
Thursday 29 May at 7pm
Saturday 31 May at 3pm.

11 places you probably remember going if you were dating in the 80s
There was no online dating, no Tinder or Grindr, and no smartphones, for a start. But if you were taking someone out on a date during the 1980s, there were a few places you probably ended up. We've put together a list of the most popular spots and activities for a date back then - perfect for anyone who wants to recreate that 80s dating experience. Just don't forget the big hair and shoulder pads, and be sure to leave the phone at home and arrange a meeting place and time. All these venues and activities were cheap, and in some cases free, making them the perfect choice for young romantics back then. Most of them are still options for a date, though some of the 80s venues have sadly closed. If you enjoyed this trip down memory lane, you might want to take a look at these nostalgic photos showing popular restaurant chains of the 70s, 80s and 90s that we have lost. 1 . Pizzaland Nothing screams romance like Italian food. If you wanted to impress your date on a budget, you might have taken them to Pizzaland, which was huge during the 80s. The popular chain ran a 'pizza for a penny' offer, with coupons available in newspapers. | National World Photo Sales 2 . Roller disco Roller skating was all the rage in the 80s, with even Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz getting in on the act. Perhaps you took your date to the roller disco and tried to impress them with your moves - or just avoid ending up on your backside. | Getty Images Photo: Fox Photos/Hulton Archive Photo Sales 3 . A trip to the cinema The cinema has always been a popular spot for romance, with lovers canoodling in the back row under the dimmed lighting. Rom-coms ruled during the 80s, with classics like When Harry Met Sally, Dirty Dancing, Splash, and Overboard all enchanting moviegoers. | Shields Gazette Photo Sales 4 . A meal at your local Berni Inn Berni Inn steakhouses were everywhere during the 80s, and they were a safe bet for a first date. The food was affordable and reliably good, with prawn cocktail starters and black forest gateau for dessert among the most popular items on the menu, along with steak and chips. | Derbyshire Times/Chesterfield Library Photo: Derbyshire Times/Chesterfield Library Photo Sales

Strictly Come Dancing star Motsi Mabuse speaks out after legal victory against ex-husband
Mabuse expressed relief after winning a three-year legal battle with her ex husband Timo Kulczak over claims in her autobiography. Strictly Come Dancing star Motsi Mabuse has spoken of her relief after a lengthy legal battle with her former husband Timo Kulczak finally came to an end. The professional dancer revealed that proceedings, which had dragged on for nearly three years, concluded with a court ruling in her favour. Kulczak, whom she married in 2003 and divorced in 2014, had launched legal action against her last year, seeking £70,000 in damages over claims she made in her autobiography, Mirror reports. In the book, Mabuse described him as 'controlling' and made a number of allegations about their marriage. Kulczak denied the accusations and said they had breached what he believed to be a private agreement between the former couple not to discuss their personal lives publicly. The case eventually made its way to court, where he insisted her remarks had harmed his dance coaching career and personal life. Posting on social media today, Mabuse said the conclusion of the case brought a weight off her shoulders. She wrote: 'After almost three years, the legal proceedings against me have now come to an end, with the court ruling in my favour. This case has been a long and challenging process, accompanied by media coverage and many articles over the years. 'It has been a constant burden, and I am relieved that clarity has finally been achieved. Now I can close this chapter and focus on the future with renewed strength.' The Strictly judge also expressed gratitude to those closest to her, including her husband Evgenij Voznyuk, her management and her legal team, for their support throughout the ordeal. Mabuse met Voznyuk, her dance partner, after the breakdown of her marriage to Kulczak. The pair married in 2017 and now share a daughter. Together, they run a dance school in Germany, where Mabuse has lived for several years. Reflecting last year on their past relationship, Kulczak claimed that Mabuse initially struggled to adapt to German culture and that he had to help her 'organise' her life. Speaking to The Sun, he said: 'For sure, the German character is different from the South African way of living. But she lived here a very long time, so she got used to it and liked how organised everything was and how things were functioning because it was organised.' Kulczak also claimed that all he had sought from Mabuse was an apology. 'I just wanted the apology. But at the point where you say all further communication is through legal teams, an apology is not enough any more,' he said. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The dancer, however, has now drawn a line under the dispute, just as she prepares for another glittering season of Strictly Come Dancing. She will return to the judging panel this autumn alongside Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and Head Judge Shirley Ballas. The quartet will soon welcome a brand-new line-up of celebrity contestants onto the famous dancefloor, with the BBC programme set to return in just a few weeks' time.
