West Ham's Lucas Paqueta cleared of betting charges by FA

Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of misconduct charges related to alleged breaches of Football Association betting rules, his club West Ham have announced. The Brazilian was charged with four alleged breaches of FA Rule E5.1 by the FA in May 2024 in relation to matches involving West Ham. It was alleged Paqueta directly sought to influence matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market, in order for one or more persons to profit from betting. He denied the charges and an independent regulatory commission found the charges not proven following a hearing. The FA said two charges against Paqueta related to a failure to co-operate with its investigation had been found proven. The FA said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches "at the earliest opportunity".

Ireland's Sam Monaghan 'really emotional' as injury nightmare finally behind her

There is no good time to suffer an ACL injury. Sam Monaghan suffered hers last June when starting for Gloucester Hartpury in the Premiership Women's Rugby final: forced off just 18 minutes into her club's defining game of the season. A full season has been laid waste since, Ireland going on to enjoy a breakout experience at the WXV1s tournament in Canada where they beat the world champions New Zealand and then a Six Nations off the back of it. But if there's one thing to be thankful for then it's the fact that the long road back to fitness has been completed just as a World Cup comes around. Monaghan will return to a green jersey for Saturday's warm-up against Scotland in Cork. 'It was really emotional seeing my name on the teamsheet again, not only for me but for my family, teammates, everyone who's been on the journey with me: physios, S&Cs. It's been a long road, a lot longer than I thought it would be. 'Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel was very special but it's given me chances. I missed out on the Six Nations but I got the chance to sit out in the crowd, so I got to be part of that and see how powerful the girls' performances are on the pitch. 'Hopefully I can add value on Saturday after what they've built over the last couple of years. It's been a great year for us. Yeah, we didn't finish the Six Nations the way we wanted but I feel like we've had a really strong pre-season and we're really excited for Saturday.' Others have been stricken at the worst possible moment. The knee injury Erin King suffered against England in the Six Nations ended her World Cup ambitions. Dorothy Wall's went the same way that same month when she was helped off against Scotland with what turned out to be an Achilles injury. Both are big performers in Scott Bemand's Ireland pack and they will be missed on the park in England in August and September. The collective consequences are one thing, for the players themselves it is a pummelling blow. King has spoken about the unfairness of it all. Wall described herself at the time as devastated. 'Injuries are always so tough,' said Monaghan. 'We've such a strong connection as a group so when we lose someone we really feel it, on and off the pitch they are such big characters. But they are both working extremely hard and I know how tough a journey it can be. 'After coming out of a long injury myself I am really gutted for them but I've no doubt they'll come back stronger. High level sport… It's given the opportunity for someone else to come in and we've had other girls come in and put their hand up and really perform.' Monaghan returns to the second row as captain for this game in Virgin Media Park. It's a team balancing experience and youth with Ivana Kiripati in the back row and Nancy McGillivray in the centre making debuts. Ailish Quinn should do the same off the bench. The skipper knows what's required. 'You kind of have to try and put yourself in their shoes, and cast your mind back to your first cap and how you felt. There's such an amazing group here, and there's so many leaders that we empower each other. 'And we really pick each other up and put an arm around one another. It's about empowering them girls to do what they've been doing in preseason and giving them the ability to do it on the pitch on Saturday.'

Josh van der Flier praised by Andy Farrell after hopes of Lions Test cap dashed

Andy Farrell has paid tribute to Josh van der Flier after deciding to omit the 2022 World Player of the Year from any of his British and Irish Lions Test squads. Van der Flier, 32, will be gutted to have missed out on a chance to face Australia across any of the three Tests played in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Farrell made two changes to his line-up for the third and final Test on Saturday but van der Flier failed to force his way into an unchanged back row or onto a bench that includes six forwards. The Leinster flanker has started for Ireland in 44 of 50 Tests for Farrell since the 2019 World Cup but, despite nine Irish internationals getting the nod to start at the Olympic Stadium and two more making the bench, van der Flier is on the outside again. "Josh has epitomised what it takes to be a Lions tourist," said Farrell, who will use just 27 players over the three Tests, and with the series already won by the visitors thanks to Hugo Keenan's last minute match-deciding try at the MCG. 'Him, like the rest of the guys who haven't put the shirt on as far as the Test matches are concerned, is disappointed but at the same time delighted. Josh van der Flier of the British and Irish Lions runs with the ball during the tour match against First Nations & Pasifika v British at Marvel Stadium on July 22 (Image:) "The conversation I had with him over the last three or four weeks, and obviously there have been many conversations with everyone, it is just about the nature of the position and how competitive that is and the balance of the back row. 'He knows exactly what we think of him and his response to all that has always been to train the house down and prepare the team as best he could and the other thing he said after his disappointment yesterday would have been that he has had the time of his life. It says everything about the man.' Farrell, meanwhile, has kicked to touch questions about the possibility of him taking on the head coach role when the Lions tour New Zealand in 2029. The 50-year-old took a sabbatical from the Ireland hot-seat after the November internationals and will return to the post after he returns from Australia. 'Would I? Give me a break would you!' he said. 'Let me get through Saturday. Honestly, for me it has been absolutely brilliant. I have absolutely loved every single minute and I knew I would because I just love everything that the Lions is about. 'Thinking about the future is not something that is on my mind until I get home and have a bit of reflection on the whole thing.'
