Adley Rutschman Trade Interest Likely to Shift Drastically After Injury News

The Baltimore Orioles earned a series sweep over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, but it's going to take a whole lot more to reverse one of the harshest seasons in recent history.
The team started the campaign with a two-year playoff streak and one of the most exciting groups of young position players in the sport. But injuries, regression and a depleted pitching staff have turned that promise into a historic disappointment.
"The Orioles are the most disappointing team I can remember since I've been following baseball," Jayson Stark wrote for The Athletic. "So talk about teams that could fire up this trade deadline. Suppose the Orioles were bold enough to dangle a young, centerpiece bat for a young, controllable top-of-the-rotation arm?"
With a 40-49 record as of Monday and sitting more than 11 games back in the American League East division after Sunday's sweep, the Orioles seem destined to trade away some players headed toward free agency. But Dayn Perry of CBS Sports made the case that they could also deal star catcher Adley Rutschman as the latest update on his oblique injury indicates he can return shortly after the All-Star break.

"When it comes to big names dealt before July ends, this year's crop may not be a healthy one," Perry noted. "There's a resurgent Eugenio Suarez as one possibility, but it's far from certain that the (Arizona) Diamondbacks will sell. Ryan McMahon? Decline-phase Nolan Arenado? Again, it's not exactly inspiring stuff, and one could argue that Rutschman could be the biggest name on the market among hitters even after you consider his disappointing offensive numbers."
After a second-straight All-Star season last year, Rutschman has slashed just .227/.319/.691 this year amid his injury problems and the team's overall struggles. That could be a reason for the Orioles to hang onto him, as he has two more years of arbitration eligibility ahead and his potential value would grow with a bounce back.
But that future controllability is also a key factor in Rutschman's potential trade value now. And there's no telling what a rival team might be willing to give up if the Orioles really do make Rutschman the biggest name on the market at this year's deadline.

Rays slugger Junior Caminero to compete in Home Run Derby and start at third base in All-Star Game

Tampa Bay Rays slugger Junior Caminero announced Wednesday he will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday in Atlanta, then learned hours later he will start at third base for the AL squad in the All-Star Game the following night. In between, Caminero belted his 22nd homer of the season in the seventh inning of a 7-3 win in Detroit. Caminero, who turned 22 on July 5, leads all American League third basemen in homers during a breakout season. He is hitting .254 with 58 RBIs for the Rays, who moved within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East on Wednesday night. 'I'm going to put on a show. I'm going to try to put on a show just to give the fans the opportunity to get to know me, see my power,' Caminero said. 'Just being there with all those other All-Stars, it's going to be something very special.' Caminero is the sixth player to commit to the Home Run Derby, joining the Mariners' Cal Raleigh, James Wood of the Nationals, Byron Buxton of the Twins, the Pirates' Oneil Cruz and Ronald Acuna Jr. of the host Braves. Two more contestants are still to be announced, and Buxton's status is unclear after he was hit in the left hand by a pitch during Wednesday night's win over the Cubs. New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., also headed to the All-Star Game, said Wednesday night he'd be interested in participating if asked. Chisholm hit two homers in a 9-6 victory over Seattle to give him 17 this season. Caminero was picked earlier this week as the All-Star replacement for Boston third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps. Caminero learned he will start at the hot corner after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out of the Midsummer Classic so he could rest an ailing Achilles tendon. The only Rays players besides Caminero to participate in the Home Run Derby have been Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Randy Arozarena, who reached the finals two years ago before losing to Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 'We get to see (Caminero) do probably a modified Home Run Derby every time he takes batting practice. I'm excited for him. I'm excited for his family,' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. 'Somewhat of a coming-out party for him. Hopefully, he gets the recognition that we've all seen in the talent and the ability to hit the ball a long way.'

Perez and Caglianone power Royals to 4-3 win over Pirates for 3-game sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez homered twice, Jac Caglianone hit the longest measured homer by a Royals rookie, and Kansas City beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. Perez broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with his longball off Isaac Mattson (2-1). He opened the scoring with a 444-foot shot to center in the second. But the most impressive homer of the game belonged to Caglianone — a 466-foot, two-run drive to center in the fourth against Bailey Falter. It was the longest homer by a Royals rookie since Statcast started tracking in 2015 and the fourth-longest by any Kansas City player at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals have won six of seven overall. They did not have a multi-homer game this season before doing it Monday night against Pittsburgh, and now they've done it three games in a row. Kansas City hit nine homers in the series. Pittsburgh fell to 0-6 on its nine-game trip ahead of the All-Star break after getting shut out in three straight games at Seattle. Perez had his second multi-homer game of the season and 19th of his career, extending his franchise record. Lucas Erceg (4-2) worked a scoreless eighth and Carlos Estevez pitched the ninth for his 25th save. Ke'Bryan Hayes had a two-run single in the Pirates' three-run sixth. Key moment Perez sent the first pitch of the eighth to the walkway just short of the fountains in right-center. Key stat Kansas City swept a series at home for the first time since a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox in early May. Up next Pirates: Begin a three-game series at Minnesota on Friday. Royals: Host the New York Mets for three games starting Friday. ___ AP MLB:
