Beijing Official Admits Failures In Deadly Floods: 'Putting People First Is More Than A Slogan'
A top city official acknowledged gaps in preparedness after devastating floods killed 44 people and displaced thousands across Beijing.
A top Beijing official publicly admitted to government failings in the city's response to catastrophic flooding, marking a rare moment of accountability amid mounting public scrutiny. Yu Weiguo, the Communist Party secretary for Miyun district- one of the hardest-hit areas- said that there were 'gaps" in the city's flood preparedness and that authorities had underestimated the severity of the storm.
Yu Weiguo said, 'There were gaps in our preparatory plans. Our knowledge of extreme weather was lacking. This tragic lesson has warned us that putting the people first, putting human life first, is more than a slogan."
The floods, triggered by record-breaking rainfall, have so far killed at least 44 people, with nine still missing as a staggering year's worth of rain fell in just seven days across Beijing and surrounding areas. The extreme weather impacted more than 300,000 people, forcing 80,000 evacuations and leaving over 100 villages without power. Residents in flood-prone regions like Miyun and Yanqing said that they received little to no warning before the storm struck.
Among the confirmed deaths, 31 occurred at a nursing home in Taishitun, a town in Miyun, where many residents had limited mobility. Yu Weiguo expressed 'deep mourning" for the victims, many of whom were elderly and unable to escape in time.
Beijing's Infrastructure Shortcomings Exposed
City authorities admitted that disaster prevention infrastructure in Beijing's mountainous outer districts remains underdeveloped and said existing response plans were insufficient to handle such unprecedented rainfall. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged all departments to 'make every effort to protect people's lives and property."

Hurricane Gil forms in eastern Pacific but not forecast to threaten land
Agency: Mexico City, Aug 2 (AP) Tropical Storm Gil strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday but was not expected to threaten land, forecasters said. The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 1,080 miles (1,740 kilometers) west-southwest of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico. Gil had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph (31 kph). No coastal watches or warnings were in effect. The storm was expected to keep traveling to the west-northwest in the coming days. Gil was strengthening during a busy period for storms in the eastern Pacific. Another named storm, Iona, which also was once a hurricane, was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression as it moved far to the west of Hawaii. It, too, was not threatening land. Other storms could develop in the coming days in the eastern Pacific, forecasters said. No Flood Can Stop The Wedding: Bihar Groom's Adventure Ride To Shaadi Mandap Looks Straight Out Of War 2
Last Updated: The groom would have taken a direct 35 kilometer route to the bride's village in Bihar, but due to floods, the path became much longer and harder to travel. In Bihar's Bhagalpur district, heavy floods caused a wedding procession to take an unusual turn. The groom, Devmuni Kumar, could not travel the normal way to his bride's house because the roads were flooded and blocked by water. Instead of riding in a fancy car, Devmuni travelled by boat and used an e-rickshaw to reach the bride's home in Katakosh village. He was joined by close to 25 to 30 friends and family members. Normally, the groom would have taken a direct 35 kilometer route, but as the Ganga River had overflowed, the path became much longer and harder to travel. Speaking with ETV Bharat, Devmuni's father, Ramdev Mandal, said, 'The date of the wedding was fixed a month ago and the procession was to go to the house of Ramchandra Chaudhary of Katakosh village in Manihari block of Katihar district. But our Bakharpur village was surrounded by flood water on all sides. There was no other way to leave the village except for the 30 of us to move by boat." बिहार के भागलपुर जिले के पीरपैंती प्रखंड के बाखरपुर से एक बारात नाव के सहारे लड़की के घर पहुंची. दुल्हन नाव पर ही सवार होकर विदा हुई. बिहार में बाढ़ का संकट गहराने लगा है. — Thakur Shaktilochan shandilya (@Ershaktilochan) July 30, 2025 Devmuni Kumar shared that his journey to the bride's house started in a decorated Scorpio car, but they couldn't travel far because of the floods. After a point, the bride's family had to walk to reach the riverbank, from where they took a boat. At first, the weather was clear, but as soon as they got on the boat, it began to rain. By the time they reached the bride's house, everyone was soaked. Despite leaving home at day time, they managed to reach the bride's village by 8 PM. After the boat ride, their journey wasn't over, they were still forced to walk for a few more kilometres before getting into e-rickshaws that finally took them to the wedding venue. The groom said, 'My desire that the party be accompanied by a band playing music along with pomp and show remained unfulfilled." Apart from Katakosh village, many other places in Bihar, like Nepal, Ganga and Kosi, are also facing heavy rains and floods. Water has entered homes, fields are damaged, and roads are blocked. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
