Shilo Sanders impressing Buccaneers during rookie minicamp: 'He's very intelligent'
Shilo Sanders isn't getting as much attention as his little brother, Shedeur, at Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie minicamp.
But that doesn't matter as long as he continues to impress his new coaches.
Shilo Sanders signed with the Buccaneers, a team in need of some secondary help entering the 2025 season, in hopes that he can crack the 53-man roster come Week 1. And while training camp is still some months away, he's done a good job making a good first impression on head coach Todd Bowles.
"Like the rest of the safeties, he's very intelligent, he's very loud," Bowles said. "You can hear him (on the field), making calls and everything, so he has a good grasp of things Day 1. There was about three or four of them that did. He was one of them, but you have to make plays in pads. That's what it comes down to – knowing what to do and then doing it consistently and constantly getting better every day."
Sanders also knows how a good impression on the media can work in his favor, as he made sure to shake every one of their hands during his availability. After the introductions were complete, he discussed this opportunity.
"Man, look at where we're at," he said. "Look at the whole coaching staff. It's a really supportive coaching staff. Everybody wants to see everybody do good. Everybody on the team, we all want to see each other win. It's a great environment to thrive in."
Sanders has also been impressing his new teammates, including third-round pick Jacob Parrish.
"He's very smart," he said. "He helped me a lot with the adjustments. I'm excited to work with him."
Being a member of the secondary, Sanders has always been compared to his Hall of Fame father, Deion Sanders, which is only natural. But the 25-year-old simply wants to work, and thanks the Buccaneers for the opportunity to show them he can help this season.
"They gave me a chance before anyone so I'm forever grateful to the Buccaneers, and I'm just gonna do everything in my power to help this team win," he said. "That's all I want."
Antoine Winfield Jr. is the Pro Bowl veteran on Bowles' defense, so free safety is the only likely available spot for Sanders. However, every good secondary needs depth, and those players are also critical pieces on special teams.
Sanders thinks he can separate himself from the pack by showing he can force turnovers.
"Throughout my whole career, I've always been a guy who gets the ball out any way, shape or form," he said. "Forced fumbles, picks, I'm gonna get the ball. That's the whole point of playing defense. We wanna get the offense the ball."

Arkesh Ray of Atlanta Falcons on SI has suggested that the team could consider signing former Green Bay Packers star cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was recently released by the Packers. "With major injury concerns and an inability to stay on the field as of late, Alexander would not be able to demand a huge contract. If the Falcons are able to bring him on a cheap deal, they should consider it, providing competition and depth at outside corner," Ray wrote. "With Alexander's injury history and matador tackling, Alexander could still fit a coverage role that should be even more valuable with an upgraded pass rush." Adding a piece like Alexander could be the fix that the Falcons' defense needs. If he can return to full health and stay healthy, he's still more than capable of being one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Last season with Green Bay, Alexander showed off what he's capable of in the seven games he did play. He recorded 16 total tackles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes. That's where he would stay as long as he's healthy enough to play. While the concerns about his health could scare teams off, the Falcons would be taking on little to no risk. Panthers power play production could be an edge in tight Stanley Cup Final against the Oilers
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Staying out of the penalty box is a good place to start for all the players involved in the Stanley Cup Final. After talking all week about being more disciplined, the Edmonton Oilers were whistled for high-sticking a couple of times and tripping once in the first 16 minutes of Game 4 on Thursday night. Naturally, Matthew Tkachuk scored twice for Florida Panthers, and then a slashing call put the Oilers on the power play and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' goal sparked their comeback that tied the series. 'It's a good series,' Tkachuk said. 'Special teams, both teams' power play seemed to be clicking.' Florida is clicking at a higher rate at 33%, going 7 of 21 with the man advantage, compared with 20% on 4 of 20 for Edmonton. In a final knotted 2-2 that has often been as tight as it can be with three games already decided in overtime, the Panthers' power play production has the potential to be a difference-maker. Until Tkachuk broke through, it had been the second unit of Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, Evan Rodrigues and Nate Schmidt doing most of the damage. 'We're building a lot of chemistry playing together,' Verhaeghe said. 'We have so many great players on the unit. Both units have been pretty good. I mean, we just want to move the puck right and get pucks to the net.' The Panthers have five power play goals over the past two games and have scored at least one every night in the final.
