Death toll rises to 17 in Mirchowk fire tragedy; PM, CM announces relief measures
Hyderabad, May 18 (UNI) The death toll in the massive fire that broke out at Gulzar House near Charminar in the early hours of Sunday has tragically risen to 17.
According to the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department, the fire was reported at 6:16 AM at a G+2 building located at Gulzar House Chowrasta, Charminar. A water tender and crew from the Moghalpura fire station were the first to respond. The fire originated on the ground floor and quickly spread to the upper floors.
Simultaneous firefighting, search, and rescue operations were launched. Seventeen individuals who were trapped on the first floor were rescued by fire department personnel and shifted to hospitals for treatment. To overcome access limitations and expedite the rescue, assistance was requested from additional fire stations. A total of 12 fire appliances responded to the scene.
In all, 11 firefighting vehicles, one advanced fire-fighting robot, 17 fire officers, and 70 personnel were deployed in the operation. It took approximately two hours to bring the blaze under control. The Bronto Skylift hydraulic platform and fire robot played a critical role in the operation.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The value of the property damage is yet to be assessed.
The deceased were identified as Prahlad (70), Munni (70), Rajendar Modi (65), Sumitra (60), Hamey (7), Abhishek (31), Sheetal (35), Priyansh (4), Iraaj (2), Arushi (3), Rishabh (4), Pratham (1.5 years), Anuyan (3), Varsha (35), Pankaj (36) Rajini (32) and Iddu (4)
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock over the incident and ordered immediate rescue and relief measures. He directed senior officials to ensure the best medical treatment for the injured and full support for the victims' families. The CM also personally spoke to some victims and coordinated with Hyderabad in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar to oversee the response.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar visited the site and gathered details from Fire Department Director General Nagi Reddy and South Zone DCP Sneha Mishra. He stated that the fire alert was received at 0616 hours and the teams responded promptly. Though many victims were critically injured by the time help arrived, the swift response helped prevent further loss of life. He assured that a full investigation would be conducted and confirmed that preliminary findings indicated it was an accident with no foul play suspected.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy also visited the site and met with the victims' families, offering his condolences and assuring them of all necessary support from both the state and central governments.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via X (formerly Twitter), stating he was deeply anguished by the tragic loss of lives. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance Department on Sunday caught an IAS officer allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a businessman, an official release said. Raids are underway at his official residence, from where Rs 47 lakh cash has already been recovered, it said. "The IAS officer, who is posted as sub-collector, Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district, has been caught red handed while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a local businessman, as an instalment of the overall demand of Rs 20 lakh bribe...," the department said in the release. The accused officer, in his mid-30s, "called the complainant to his official government residence at Dharamgarh, received the bribe amount... and kept the same inside his table drawer", it said. The department has registered a case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and investigation is continuing, the release added.

Drunk UPSRTC driver mows down woman in Mohanlalganj
Lucknow: A woman died and a man sustained serious injuries after a speeding UPSRTC bus, driven under the influence of alcohol, mowed them down in Mohanlalganj area on Sunday morning. The out-of-control bus also rammed into a roadside grocery shop after breaking an electric pole. The incident occurred around 8 am near Bindauwa cut on the Lucknow-Raebareli national highway. The bus (UP33CT2331), belonging to the Rae Bareli depot and en route to Lucknow, hit 50-year-old cyclist Umesh Goswami and 38-year-old pedestrian Ramdevi. Both were critically injured and rushed to a local CHC, from where they were referred to KGMU Trauma Centre. Ramdevi later succumbed to her injuries. Ramdevi, a resident of Ganeshganj Bindauwa, was walking alongside the highway when the mishap occurred. Umesh, also from Bindauwa, remains in critical condition. The impact of the crash was so severe that the bus smashed an electric pole before ploughing into the closed grocery shop owned by Santosh Maurya, causing damage worth around Rs 5,000. Fortunately, the shop was closed at the time, averting further casualties. Eyewitnesses reported panic and chaos as passengers onboard fled after the crash. Approximately 20 passengers exited the bus immediately. Police reached the scene, arranged for alternate transportation for stranded commuters, and towed the damaged bus off the road. Both the driver and conductor were taken into custody. Police confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, and a medical examination is underway. Ramdevi's body was sent for post-mortem, and her family was informed. "Had the shop been open, the toll could have been much higher," said ACP, Mohanlalganj, Rajneesh Kumar.

New Delhi: Ukraine has claimed that it shot down one of Russia's most advanced and expensive fighter jets. The Ukrainian Air Force said the Russian Su-35 was destroyed near Kursk, a region inside Russian territory. The cost of this jet is said to be around Rs 700 crore (about $90 million). Moscow has not confirmed the loss. According to Ukraine, the Su-35 was taken down near the Russian border region of Kursk. The area has become a flashpoint in recent months, with Ukraine stepping up cross-border aerial strikes and drone incursions. The Ukrainian Air Force called it a successful operation. The jet was reportedly hit during a mission early Saturday morning. A statement posted on Telegram said the strike happened in the 'Kursk direction'. A video released by Ukraine shows a jet in flames, believed to be the Su-35. It is not clear if it was recorded by a drone or another fighter jet. Independent sources have not verified the video yet. The Su-35 is one of the top combat aircraft of Russia. It is 4th-generation multi-role fighter and is designed for air dominance and long-range strikes. Developed by Russia's Sukhoi, it is an upgraded version of the Su-27. The jet is known for its advanced weapons systems, agility and speed.
