USMNT star Weston McKennie among 13 players being investigated for illegal gambling in Italy, reports say

Chicago Tribune12-04-2025
MILAN — United States midfielder Weston McKennie is among 13 soccer players being investigated for illegal online betting in Italy, according to multiple reports.
A new investigation by Milan prosecutors stems from evidence given by Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Fagioli in 2023. Both then served lengthy bans, ruling them out for most of last season, after agreeing to plea bargains that also included therapy for a gambling addiction.
Juventus midfielder Fagioli — currently on loan at Fiorentina — was banned for seven months after admitting to betting on matches, while Newcastle's Tonali received a longer suspension of 10 months as his bets also included his team's games — at the time AC Milan.
The two also are named in the new investigation, along with Fagioli's then-Juventus teammate McKennie and nine other current or former Serie A players, as well as Leeds defender Junior Firpo.
There is no evidence the other players ever gambled on soccer matches, but their names emerged from depositions given by Tonali and Fagioli and analysis of their devices.
The players are being investigated for using illegal platforms for online poker and betting on other sports. As such they do not risk a ban but instead a maximum fine of $284 from Italian authorities.
Tonali and Fagioli also have been accused of promoting those sites among their teammates and other soccer players.
Fagioli said in a deposition: 'I pointed out to (former Aston Villa forward Nicolò) Zaniolo illegal sites where he could make online bets, on roulette or poker … the organisers of the sites had told me that they would give me some advantages if I brought other bettors.'
A message about Zaniolo found on Fagioli's phone also said: 'Bravo, capture him, work for me.'

Report – Inter Milan Keen To Sign Rennes Starlet To Bolster Midfield Options

Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan are reportedly keen to sign Rennes youngster Djaoui Cisse to bolster their midfield options. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInter1908, the Italian giants have switched their attention toward the 21-year-old. Despite trying to lure Manu Kone away from Roma, Inter are on the verge of admitting defeat. Indeed, Gian Piero Gasperini's men have no intention of selling the French star after a superb season. Therefore, Inter could soon lodge an opening bid for Cisse. Indeed, scouts have described the France U21 international as a modern-day midfielder. Cisse's technical qualities and versatility make him an appealing option. Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri remain attentive to market opportunities, and one such could be Mahamadou Doumbia. Contracted to Antwerp until 2027, Doumbia is among the brightest talents in the Jupiler Pro League.

Atletico Madrid and Juventus €10m apart on double deal

Atletico Madrid are still open for business this summer, despite prior reports that they were no longer in the market for more signings. Already this summer Los Colchoneros have brought in eight new players at a cost of €175m, but Director of Football Carlos Bucero has been noticeably aggressive in the market. The latest player that could leave is Nahuel Molina. The Argentina international has been on and off linked with a move this summer, with Juventus emerging as his most likely destination. Molina has already rejected a move to Bournemouth this summer, despite the club being open to accepting a €20m deal for him. Atletico and Juventus €10m apart on Molina In spite of that, GdS (via MD) claim that Atletico and Juventus remain separated by €10m on their valuation of Molina. They are keen to get €25m in for Molina, but the Bianconeri are reluctant to spend more than €15m on him. While the difference could hinge on payment forms, the above information would suggest they may be able to meet in the middle. Molina made the move to Atletico for €20m, but has struggled to make an impact, and is now 27 years old. Image viaAtletico Madrid still in the market for Nicolas Gonzalez Last week, Atletico were also linked with Nicolas Gonzalez, also of Juventus. Diego Simeone is reportedly keen to bring in a wide player before the end of the window that can take on a defender. The Italian outlet go on to say that on that deal too, the two sides are €10m apart. Simeone keen on two more signings On Tuesday night, Marcos Duran claims that Simeone and Bucero met to discuss their plans for the remainder of the window. Their pursuit of Gonzalez was confirmed, but that a second signing is also on the table, as of yet unknown in terms of position or player. Atletico have also seemingly opened the door to a departure for Alexander Sorloth, and a replacement for the Norwegian could explain the idea of a second signing. However there are contradictory reports on Sorloth's future, and the chances of Atletico making their money back on Sorloth, which is seemingly what they will demand, look slim at the time of writing.

Kai Havertz injury — Arsenal lose German for undisclosed period, seek forward in transfer market

Arsenal is back into the transfer market for forward help after versatile German striker Kai Havertz suffered a knee injury, according to David Ornstein. The injury to Havertz, 26, leaves the Gunners with just one healthy center forward — new signing Viktor Gyokeres — as Gabriel Jesus has yet to return from last season's ACL injury. Havertz did not train on Wednesday and Ornstein said there's no set duration for the player's absence. Failing to account for Havertz's midseason injury last season is seen by many as a big reason for their stumble in the Premier League title race. Havertz scored nine times with three assists in 23 appearances last season and made 30 starts in each of his the previous two Premier League seasons. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had planned to use Havertz as a second striker but has also deployed the valuable German in the midfield and as a winger. Kai Havertz injury — Who could the Gunners sign in transfer market? The length of absence will dictate the investment required to deputize for Havertz, of course, and a lot of center forwards have already moved in the market. Could Yoane Wissa be an option? Brentford are asking $80 million for the 28-year-old scorer, and Wissa is has been sitting out from Bees camp as Newcastle have not raised their bid from $54 million. The Gunners have made moves with Chelsea in the past, and the Blues are reportedly looking to offload Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, while Manchester United hope to sell Rasmus Hojlund. But would Arsenal be desperate enough to help their Big Six rivals out of jams? As for further long shots, Ollie Watkins is known as a long-time Arsenal fan, but would surely be looking for a more crucial role in an attack than Gyokeres' No. 2. Adding Alexander Isak would be bonkers given the outlay for Gyokeres as a clear No. 1 striker, but we suppose there's a non-zero chance the Gunners could approach Newcastle. More to come...
