USMNT star Weston McKennie among 13 players being investigated for illegal gambling in Italy, reports say
A new investigation by Milan prosecutors stems from evidence given by Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Fagioli in 2023. Both then served lengthy bans, ruling them out for most of last season, after agreeing to plea bargains that also included therapy for a gambling addiction.
Juventus midfielder Fagioli — currently on loan at Fiorentina — was banned for seven months after admitting to betting on matches, while Newcastle's Tonali received a longer suspension of 10 months as his bets also included his team's games — at the time AC Milan.
The two also are named in the new investigation, along with Fagioli's then-Juventus teammate McKennie and nine other current or former Serie A players, as well as Leeds defender Junior Firpo.
There is no evidence the other players ever gambled on soccer matches, but their names emerged from depositions given by Tonali and Fagioli and analysis of their devices.
The players are being investigated for using illegal platforms for online poker and betting on other sports. As such they do not risk a ban but instead a maximum fine of $284 from Italian authorities.
Tonali and Fagioli also have been accused of promoting those sites among their teammates and other soccer players.
Fagioli said in a deposition: 'I pointed out to (former Aston Villa forward Nicolò) Zaniolo illegal sites where he could make online bets, on roulette or poker … the organisers of the sites had told me that they would give me some advantages if I brought other bettors.'
A message about Zaniolo found on Fagioli's phone also said: 'Bravo, capture him, work for me.'

Atletico Madrid are still open for business this summer, despite prior reports that they were no longer in the market for more signings. Already this summer Los Colchoneros have brought in eight new players at a cost of €175m, but Director of Football Carlos Bucero has been noticeably aggressive in the market. The latest player that could leave is Nahuel Molina. The Argentina international has been on and off linked with a move this summer, with Juventus emerging as his most likely destination. Their pursuit of Gonzalez was confirmed, but that a second signing is also on the table, as of yet unknown in terms of position or player. Atletico have also seemingly opened the door to a departure for Alexander Sorloth, and a replacement for the Norwegian could explain the idea of a second signing. However there are contradictory reports on Sorloth's future, and the chances of Atletico making their money back on Sorloth, which is seemingly what they will demand, look slim at the time of writing.

Arsenal is back into the transfer market for forward help after versatile German striker Kai Havertz suffered a knee injury, according to David Ornstein. The injury to Havertz, 26, leaves the Gunners with just one healthy center forward — new signing Viktor Gyokeres — as Gabriel Jesus has yet to return from last season's ACL injury. Havertz did not train on Wednesday and Ornstein said there's no set duration for the player's absence. Failing to account for Havertz's midseason injury last season is seen by many as a big reason for their stumble in the Premier League title race. Havertz scored nine times with three assists in 23 appearances last season and made 30 starts in each of his the previous two Premier League seasons. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had planned to use Havertz as a second striker but has also deployed the valuable German in the midfield and as a winger. The length of absence will dictate the investment required to deputize for Havertz, of course, and a lot of center forwards have already moved in the market. Could Yoane Wissa be an option?
