USMNT star Weston McKennie among 13 players being investigated for illegal gambling in Italy, reports say

Chicago Tribune12-04-2025

MILAN — United States midfielder Weston McKennie is among 13 soccer players being investigated for illegal online betting in Italy, according to multiple reports.
A new investigation by Milan prosecutors stems from evidence given by Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Fagioli in 2023. Both then served lengthy bans, ruling them out for most of last season, after agreeing to plea bargains that also included therapy for a gambling addiction.
Juventus midfielder Fagioli — currently on loan at Fiorentina — was banned for seven months after admitting to betting on matches, while Newcastle's Tonali received a longer suspension of 10 months as his bets also included his team's games — at the time AC Milan.
The two also are named in the new investigation, along with Fagioli's then-Juventus teammate McKennie and nine other current or former Serie A players, as well as Leeds defender Junior Firpo.
There is no evidence the other players ever gambled on soccer matches, but their names emerged from depositions given by Tonali and Fagioli and analysis of their devices.
The players are being investigated for using illegal platforms for online poker and betting on other sports. As such they do not risk a ban but instead a maximum fine of $284 from Italian authorities.
Tonali and Fagioli also have been accused of promoting those sites among their teammates and other soccer players.
Fagioli said in a deposition: 'I pointed out to (former Aston Villa forward Nicolò) Zaniolo illegal sites where he could make online bets, on roulette or poker … the organisers of the sites had told me that they would give me some advantages if I brought other bettors.'
A message about Zaniolo found on Fagioli's phone also said: 'Bravo, capture him, work for me.'

Juventus Breaks Silence on Newcastle, Tottenham Target's Future as PSG Exit Looms

Randal Kolo Muani made an immediate impact after joining Juventus on loan from PSG, tallying 10 goal contributions in 19 matches across all competitions. PSG are hoping his strong form in Turin helps raise his value ahead of the summer transfer window. The club is aiming to recoup at least half of the €95 million it paid Eintracht Frankfurt for him in 2023. Advertisement Kolo Muani struggled to earn minutes under Luis Enrique this season, making just two starts. His future could also hinge on how things take shape under Juventus' new coaching staff. After Thiago Motta's departure, Igor Tudor took over, and while Kolo Muani had to fight for a consistent role, he became more involved late in the 2024-25 campaign. As a result, Juventus plan to keep him around for at least the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. What's the latest on Juventus keeping PSG loaneeJuventus' general manager Damien Comolli recently spoke about the outlook of Kolo Muani staying with the Italian side past the FIFA Club World Cup. Advertisement 'We've reached an agreement with PSG regarding his salary, and he will be with us for the Club World Cup,' Comolli said (h/t Le10Sport). 'There is no final agreement yet for next season, but I'm optimistic because PSG haven't closed the door, and Kolo Muani wants to stay with us.' Kolo Muani may be open to staying in Turin, but his future at Juventus likely hinges on financial and contractual decisions. Back in April, GIVEMESPORT reported that Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make another move for the French forward if Juventus choose not to make his loan permanent. Tottenham are expected to pursue attacking reinforcements this summer, regardless of whether Ange Postecoglou stays on as manager. Muani's next step remains uncertain, but interest in the 26-year-old is picking up. According to TuttoJuve, Arsenal and Newcastle United are currently at the front of the pack. Whether it's another loan or a permanent switch, his future could be one of the summer's most talked-about storylines.

Heated tennis handshake features fiery ‘pig,' ‘piece of s–t' exchange

Two of tennis's most intense players faced off Tuesday and the ending wasn't pretty. Italian 38-year-old Fabio Fognini took on 26-year-old Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the Stuttgart Open, where Moutet bested Fognini in three sets 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. When the two met at the net to shake hands after the match, things got feisty. Fabio Fognini (left) confronts Corentin Moutet after their match. Tennis TV/X Fognini spoke to Moutet in French, saying, 'Look at me, look at me!' while the two shook hands. Moutet mostly ignored Fognini's hostility before it escalated even further. 'Look at me, little pig!' the Italian said. 'You're a piece of s–t!' Moutet continued to keep his poise as he shook hands with the line umpire before walking back onto the court and soaking up some more of the applause from the fans in Stuttgart, Germany. Moutet had a similar tense situation earlier this year when he and Alexander Bublik were forced to be separated by an umpire. Corentine Moutet will take on Stuttgart's top seed Thursday after beating Fabio Fognini. Susan Mullane-Imagn Images But similarly to this time around, Moutet didn't seem to be the one who started the last argument either, as he had told Bublik he wasn't ready for his serve, to which the Kazakh responded, 'I don't give a s–t!' Bublik then tried picking a fight at the end of the match, telling Moutet 'Let's go! We meet in 10 minutes outside.' While Moutet fired back a bit at Bublik, he ultimately laughed off the offers for a physical altercation. Moutet kept his cool relatively well in these situations. However, he is the common denominator in the two incidents that occurred less than three months apart, so perhaps he has a way of getting under his opponents' skin that the public doesn't know about. With the win over Fognini on Tuesday, Moutet advanced to take on the tournament favorite, Alexander Zverev. They will face off on Thursday. As for Fognini, it's no wonder he was pretty frustrated after the loss as it eliminated him from the event that he was invited to as a wild card. Fognini is a former No. 9 player in the world rankings.
