Several persons at a pastor's home were injured in Bihar's Katihar district on Sunday after alleged members of the Hindutva group Bajrang Dal attacked them during a prayer, The Indian Express reported.
The Bajrang Dal claimed that attempts were being made to convert people at the gathering.
The Bajrang Dal is part of a group of Hindutva organisations led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the parent organisation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
The police are investigating the incident.
The newspaper quoted an unidentified person who was at the pastor's home as claiming that 40 to 45 individuals had gathered there for the Sunday prayer meeting at about 10 am.
About 30 to 40 men, 'some carrying iron rods, sticks and even pistols' attacked those inside the house, the newspaper quoted the witness as saying. At least 10 persons were attacked with iron rods, according to the witness.
A complaint was filed at the Sahayak police station against the violence.
While speaking to reporters, the Bajrang Dal's district coordinator Pawan Poddar claimed that the organisation had information of religious 'conversion activities' being conducted 'on a large scale'.
'When we arrived, efforts were underway to entice and persuade 200 to 250 innocent Hindus …' the newspaper quoted Poddar as having claimed. 'Several such books and items used for conversion were found. We informed the local police over the phone, and they came and took everyone away.'
Residents were quoted as having claimed that six persons present at the prayer meeting were later detained for questioning.
Shikhar Choudhary, the Katihar superintendent of police, said that information was received on Sunday about alleged religious conversions being carried out in the area.
'Police are investigating, and some people have been brought in for questioning in this matter,' The Indian Express quoted the officer as saying.
He added that the persons making allegations about conversions had 'carried out an assault at the spot'.
'We are identifying those involved in the assault, and an FIR has been lodged against them for further action,' he said.

BJP seeks NIA probe into Hindu activist's murder in front of a mosque, writes to Karnataka Governor

The BJP on Wednesday urged Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prevail upon the state government to hand over the probe into the murder of a Hindu activist in Koppal to the NIA, alleging a "deep-rooted conspiracy" by Jehadi extremist groups. The BJP has requested Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to intervene in a Hindu activist's murder.(PTI) In a detailed memorandum submitted to the Governor at Raj Bhavan, the BJP legislators said Gavisiddappa Nayak, a Scheduled Tribe Valmiki community leader, was brutally murdered on August 3 in front of the Syed Nadeemullah Qadri Mosque at Koppal town. The party alleged that the murder bore the "stamp of the PFI and SDPI" and accused the Congress government of showing a "soft corner" to "dangerous elements." "The peace and tranquility of Koppal were shattered due to the brutal, cold-blooded murder of one Gavisiddappa Nayak on 3rd August 2025. The murder took place between 7.30 pm and 8 pm right in front of the Mosque in the heart of Koppal town," the memorandum said. The BJP legislators alleged that the prime accused, Sadiq Kolkar, had openly paraded with swords and machetes in Koppal a day before the murder and posted videos on social media. "Had the police made preventive arrests on the same day, the murder, perhaps, could have been prevented. We charge the police of dereliction of duty, negligence and irresponsibility," they said. According to the memorandum, Nayak was first called to a highway for talks but was later killed inside Koppal town. "The intention and motive are very clear -- to create terror among the Hindus and prove to the society that they can kill anybody with impunity and escape with felicity," it said. The BJP further alleged that the nature of the attack--beheading and throat-slitting--resembled earlier killings of Hindu activists in coastal Karnataka. "Going through the intention, the pattern and the motive behind the killing, it can be safely concluded that this Koppal murder has all the stamp of the SDPI and PFI," the party said, adding that "Jehadi forces operating in coastal districts have entered Koppal in Kalyana Karnataka region. This needs to be nipped in the bud, lest it spreads to entire North Karnataka region." The memorandum also accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G Parameshwara of adopting a "kid-gloves method" in dealing with such elements. "The pusillanimous attitude of the state government headed by Chief Minister Sri Siddaramaiah and the flip-flop approach of the Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara have been the main contribution for this bloody chapter. Koppal is the latest addition," it stated. The BJP legislators argued that the NIA probe was necessary to uncover "the nefarious designs of the jehadi forces operating elsewhere in Karnataka." They claimed that the killers were "trained and abetted by sleeper cells with foreign funding" and said only a central investigation could ensure a "fair, transparent and thorough probe." Expressing optimism that the Governor would intervene, the BJP said, "We are optimistic that Your Excellency will give a positive look to our request and prevail upon the state government to hand over the Gavisiddappa Nayak murder case to the National Investigating Agency (NIA) immediately." The murder of Nayak triggered widespread outrage in Koppal and other parts of north Karnataka, with opposition leaders accusing the Congress government of failing to curb extremist violence. Police have arrested a few suspects and intensified their search for Kolkar, the prime accused, even as pressure mounts for a central investigation.

‘Reprehensible act': Indian temple in US vandalised; consulate seeks probe

A Hindu temple in the United States has been vandalised, prompting condemnation from the Indian Consulate in Chicago. In a post on X, the consulate described the desecration of the main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Greenwood, Indiana, as 'reprehensible' and confirmed it had raised the matter with law enforcement for prompt action. The Consul General met devotees, local leaders and the Mayor of Greenwood, urging unity, solidarity and vigilance against 'miscreants'. The incident comes less than 6 months after a similar act of vandalism at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, California. At the time, ministry of external affairs condemned the act 'in the strongest terms' and urged local authorities to act swiftly and ensure security at places of worship. BAPS Public Affairs said the Hindu community would 'stand steadfast against hate' and 'never let hate take root'. The Coalition of Hindus of North America also linked such incidents to rising hostility towards Hindus, noting the timing ahead of a planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles. Previous attacks on BAPS temples were reported in Sacramento and New York last year, fuelling concerns over repeated targeting of Hindu places of worship across the US.

Assam: Mother of teen killed in police firing after Goalpara eviction drive seeks judicial probe

The mother of a 19-year-old who was killed in police firing during a clash between protesters and authorities after an eviction drive in Assam's Goalpara district in July has urged the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court to order a judicial investigation into the incident, The Indian Express reported on Wednesday. The violence on July 17 had resulted in the death of Shakaur Ali, whose home was demolished when authorities in Goalpara cleared 140 hectares of land in the Paikan Reserve Forest on July 12. The eviction drive displaced 1,080 families, most of whom are Muslims of Bengali origin. Since the demolition, the displaced families had been living in tents and makeshift tarpaulin huts in the Betbari area. Officials had asked them to dismantle the structures. On the morning of July 17, the authorities dug up a road that provided connectivity to the settlement, which led to protests and sparked the clashes. On July 18, the Assam Police arrested 10 persons in connection with the clashes. Those arrested 'were caught on video pelting stones and obstructing officials', the senior superintendent of police had said. In a letter to the High Court's registrar general, Ali's mother, Nachiran Bibi, described the police firing as 'unprovoked, excessive and disproportionate' and requested a judicial probe into the incident, The Indian Express reported. 'My sons – Shakaur Ali and Noser Ali – also went there to see the incident out of curiosity,' she said. 'Immediately, the police officials used lathi charge and then started open firing at the crowd… As a result of the firing, my son … sustained bullet injuries above his neck and died on the spot.' Bibi said that she had 'lost trust in the police' to conduct an impartial investigation. The police and the forest authorities have said that the security personnel opened fire after they were attacked by residents, the newspaper reported.
