Hurricane Gil continues to churn far out in eastern Pacific
Gil had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph (31 kph). No coastal watches or warnings were in effect. "Weakening is forecast to begin Saturday, and Gil is likely to become post-tropical as early as Sunday," the NHC said.
It is a busy period for storms in the eastern Pacific. Another named storm, Iona, which also was once a hurricane, was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression as it moved far to the west of Hawaii. It, too, was not threatening land. Other storms could develop in the coming days in the eastern Pacific, forecasters said.

Flash floods kill at least 4 and trap others under debris in northern India
LUCKNOW, India, Aug 5, (AP): Flash floods swept away several homes and shops in northern India, killing at least four people and leaving many others trapped under debris, officials said Tuesday. Local television channels showed flood waters surging down a mountain and crashing into Dharali, a Himalayan mountain village in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand state. The flood waters inundated homes, swept away roads and destroyed a local market. "About a dozen hotels have been washed away and several shops have collapsed,' said Prashant Arya, an administrative officer, adding that rescuers, including the Indian army and police, were searching for the missing. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said rescue agencies were working "on a war footing.' "We are doing everything possible to save lives and provide relief,' he said in a statement. India's National Disaster Management Authority said it had requested three helicopters from the federal government to assist in the rescue and relief operations as rescuers struggled to access the remote terrain. Officials have not provided a figure for those trapped or missing. India's weather agency has forecast more heavy rains in the region in the coming days. Authorities have asked schools to remain closed in several districts, including Dehradun and Haridwar cities. Sudden, intense downpours over small areas known as cloudbursts are increasingly common in Uttarakhand, a Himalayan region prone to flash floods and landslides during the monsoon season. Cloudbursts have the potential to wreak havoc by causing intense flooding and landslides, impacting thousands of people in the mountainous regions. Over 6,000 people died and 4,500 villages were affected when a similar cloudburst devastated Uttarakhand state in 2013. Experts say cloudbursts have increased in recent years partly due to climate change, while damage from the storms also has increased because of unplanned development in mountain regions. The flooding in northern India is the latest in a series of disasters that have battered the Himalayan mountains, which span across five countries, in the last few months.

Tropical Storm Henriette forms in Pacific while Tropical Storm Dexter churns in Atlantic
MIAMI, Aug 5, (AP): A tropical storm formed in the Pacific Ocean on Monday at the same time a different tropical storm was churning in the Atlantic Ocean but moving away from land, forecasters said. Tropical Storm Henriette was announced by the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. The storm was centered in the eastern Pacific about 895 miles (1,440 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Henriette had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was moving to the west-northwest at 15 mph (24 kph). Forecasters said there were no threats to land and no watches or warnings in effect, but Henriette was expected to strengthen over the next couple of days. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dexter was churning in the Atlantic Ocean about 275 miles (440 kilometers) north-northwest of Bermuda. It also had maximum sustained winds at 45 mph on Monday, the hurricane center said. Dexter was moving northeast at 15 mph and was expected to continue in that direction, however forecasters expect the tropical storm to weaken into a post-tropical cyclone by the middle to latter part of the week. No watches or warnings were associated with Dexter, and forecasters said there were no hazards affecting land. Dexter is the fourth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Henriette was the eighth named storm of this year's eastern North Pacific hurricane season.
