This Moisturiser Is A Tonic For Sensitive Skin Prone To Acne, Flaking And Excess Oil

My job means I'm constantly throwing active ingredients at my face. Retinols here, acids there. A hefty dose of niacinamide for good measure. While I know my skin well (and what it can and can't tolerate) I've learnt to recognise when it's time to strip things back again. When my skin needs something cosseting, calming and soothing, I make a point of listening.
To set the scene, I have combination skin prone to blemishes and acne. Thanks to a dermatologist appointment just over a year ago, I now know that this is caused by hormonal fluctuations. I can remember the utter despair I felt when I made that first appointment. My skin was dull and flaking. Oily across my t-zone with a smattering of spots around my chin. I was embarrassed, and I was sore. She advised I drop everything from my routine aside from a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. It felt simple, but it transformed by complexion quickly.
While one year later I have gradually reintroduced stronger actives, the moisturiser I reach for when my skin's in need of some serious TLC remains the same - the one recommended to me that very day. Enter Medik8's Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream, £48. It's no frills. But it's as efficacious as they as they come. In my naivety, I didn't know acne prone skin had the potential to glow, but this proved me wrong. Here's why I still swear by it when my skin's feeling out of sorts.
Formulated to deliver up to 100 hours of hydration, this moisturiser is a must-have for anyone looking to repair a compromised skin barrier. If you feel you've overdone it with active ingredients (signs to look out for are redness, flaking or blemishes) or your skin is just in need of a pep up, this one could be an excellent solution. It combines hyaluronic acid with clinically proven ingredients that support both the skin barrier and microbiome. Use it morning and night to soothe, calm and deeply nourish the skin. 1.

Rachael Martin, beauty director says: 'You'd be forgiven for thinking this one isn't all that exciting, but truthfully, it's as good as it gets. No frills, yes. But if you're after a solid moisturiser that helps restore your skin barrier and leaves you with healthier, more radiant skin in the long run? This one's a winner. Oh, and it's refillable.' Pros Suited to all skin types
Luxurious formula, but will sink in quickly
The customer reviews are incredibly impressive Cons Heavy pot - can make travelling a little tricky.
I've been using this both morning and evening to replenish my complexion. A walnut-sized amount, smoothed over the face, neck and décolletage, is enough to temper any tightness and help reduce flaking.
Rachael Martin, Beauty Director, says:
'For over a year now this has been an old reliable - I'll come back to it time and time again. It's skincare with no frills- but all the function. Firstly, a moment for the myriad of calming ingredients I swear by when I've overdone it. The star is the prebiotic peptide, which helps balance the skin's microbiome while strengthening the barrier. A strengthened barrier means skin that looks and feels healthier in the long run, and I always see the difference when I've taken some time out to bolster mine, especially where blemishes are concerned. Then there's hyaluronic acid- it's well known for attracting and retaining more than 1,000 times its weight in water. It leaves my skin feeling soft, supple and soothed.
And let's not forget the skin-saving heroes, ceramides and lipids. Naturally found in the skin barrier, ceramides, squalane and vitamin F mimic the skin's own lipids to nourish, replenish and visibly restore. It's a clever, comforting formula that feels gorgeous on my skin. Slightly thicker and more cosseting than my usual moisturiser, it takes a few seconds to sink in- but don't be put off. It's non-comedogenic meaning it won't clog pores. Once it does sink in, that's when the magic happens. My skin is left looking brighter, and calmer. If applying before bed my skin appears more even in tone come morning - there's a real glow there and its more even tone and texture too. In the morning it also works a treat. A small amount leaves my skin perfectly prepped for make-up- almost like a primer.
It reminds me of Embryolisse, a cream I used to love-except that one, sadly, made my sensitive skin break out. With this, my skin looks fresh, bouncy and plump. And, crucially, after just three days of swapping this one back into my routine my acne always appears reduced.'
You'd be forgiven for thinking this one isn't all that exciting, but truthfully, it's as good as it gets. No frills, yes. But if you're after a solid moisturiser that helps restore your skin barrier and leaves you with healthier, more radiant skin in the long run? This one's a winner. Oh, and it's refillable.

At 53 I've turned back time on my neck, jaw & eyes to avoid surgery – these are non-negotiables & one's on sale in Boots

A GLAM 53-year-old has revealed her miracle skincare routine and tools she swears by to keep surgery at bay. TikToker Nadia Bekar, known as @NadiaBekar, wowed fans with her youthful looks as she explained how she's held off going under the knife by sticking to a few 'non-negotiables'. 2 Sharing her age-defying secrets with over 90,000 of her followers, Nadia said: 'I'm not against surgery, but I want to hold it off as long as possible and I feel like I've done quite a good job.' The beauty fan says her jawline is still 'very streamlined', her upper eyelids are 'not too bad' and she's 'turned back time' on her neck, all without cosmetic procedures. And her biggest rule is to invest in good skincare. 'You've got to throw some money at skincare, especially your active ingredients,' she said. 'Don't be scared of that. Your non-negotiables are: a good vitamin C serum, vitamin A and a strong SPF.' One of her top picks is the La Roche-Posay which she calls 'a great high street option' . Right now, it's £31.50 at Boots, down from £45, saving shoppers £13.50. Nadia also raves about Medik8, saying she 'makes no secret' of loving the brand. She uses their vitamin C serums, SPF, and even their physical sunscreens for daily protection. But skincare alone isn't enough, Nadia insists on incorporating powerful treatments too. 'Microneedling is a non-negotiable. Whether you do it at home or in a clinic, it's clinically proven to give results,' she told viewers. And she's not wrong. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves tiny sterile needles penetrating the skin to trigger controlled healing. This stimulates regeneration, renews structural collagen fibres, and strengthens elastin, helping to tighten, smooth and revive the skin over time. One cutting-edge option now used in clinics across the UK is the XCellarisPro Twist, a precision microneedling device with an adjustable needle depth of 0.25mm to 2.5mm. Designed to treat everything from acne scars and fine lines to pigmentation and enlarged pores, it offers a minimally invasive way to restore smoother, younger-looking skin across the face and body. Treatments last between 30 to 60 minutes, with results building gradually over a course of sessions. Most people experience a bit of redness or flaking for a few days afterwards, but full recovery is typically seen within a week. Prices for microneedling start from £150 per session, depending on the clinic. While results vary, Nadia showed off her own transformation with visible improvements to her neck that she says left her more confident than ever. 'These things work, just remember, everyone's results will vary depending on their skin type and condition.' Another game-changer in her routine is a radio frequency device that combines microcurrent and infusion technology. She says the results on her neck in just four weeks were incredible. Showing off her before-and-after photos, Nadia added: 'I can actually say I'm confident with my neck for the first time in my life.' Experts agree that visible signs of ageing, like sagging, fine lines and dullness, tend to show up in your 30s and 40s, which is when anti-ageing measures should start. Regular SPF use, retinol (vitamin A), and skin-brightening vitamin C can make a huge difference when used consistently. And with powerful serums like La Roche-Posay 's now on sale, it's the perfect time to stock up. At home anti-ageing If you've tried every hack under the sun to smooth out your fine lines, but still feel like you're fighting a losing battle, it might be time to ditch the contour stick and bring in the big guns. Salon anti-ageing treatments can cost an absolute fortune, and let's be honest, not all of us have the time or the cash for regular appointments. But one high-tech beauty gadget is giving expensive facials a serious run for their money. Enter the Nira Pro+ Laser – a sleek, easy-to-use wrinkle-busting device that lets you zap fine lines at home, pain-free. This clever little machine uses laser tech to stimulate your skin's natural collagen, helping it repair itself over time, so rather than masking the signs of ageing, it actually targets them at the root. Think of it as a personal time machine for your face. And unlike most at-home gadgets that claim big things and deliver very little, the Nira is FDA-cleared, clinically proven, and actually works. It's the first and only pain-free at-home laser with a precision tip small enough to target those tricky areas around your eyes and mouth, where crow's feet and smile lines love to live. You'll start seeing results in as little as 90 days, and because it's got five comfort levels, there's no redness, no downtime, and zero discomfort. Skin expert and founder, David Bean swears by it, calling it 'far more effective than LED masks' and praising its long-lasting results. 'The best part is, it's unlimited use,' he explains. 'You can keep it in your beauty arsenal and use it whenever you feel your skin needs a boost. It's a smart investment that keeps on giving.' At £615, it's not exactly pocket change but when you compare that to the price of regular in-clinic laser sessions or injectables, the Nira more than pays for itself. For something a little more low-maintenance, ESK Evidence Skincare's Ageless Microneedle Patches offer a fuss-free fix.

‘I destroyed my skin barrier but this peptide-fuelled night cream healed it in days'

Our head of beauty shares her top Medik8 night cream for dry and damaged skin, as the hero buy hits a summer sale I knew I'd messed up the moment I rinsed off the peel. My skin felt hot, tight and angry, like I'd potentially scorched the top layer clean off. What was meant to be a quick pre-summer holiday glow boost had left me red and painfully dry. In a moment of mild panic, I reached for Medik8's Advanced Night Restore, the night cream I've kept in my cupboard for these exact type of emergency events. Packed with peptides, ceramides and antioxidants, it's a formula that goes beyond just moisturising. It's actively rebuilding. Medik8's signature 'midnight repair complex' blends ingredients like dragon fruit extract, saskatoon berry and restoring peptides that work in synch with the skin's natural overnight repair cycle. There's also niacinamide to calm and a blend of lipids to strengthen and replenish the barrier, which, let's be honest, mine was now sorely lacking. Within two nights, the sandpapery texture started to smooth out and the redness faded. My skin stopped stinging whenever I applied cleanser– always the telltale sign of damage. By day four, I'd gone from flaky and sensitised to actually hydrated, bouncy and even. Both my skin and I could breathe a sigh of relief. I now recommend this to anyone whose barrier is hanging by a thread, or who simply wants a deeply nourishing night cream that doesn't overwhelm or flare up skin conditions like eczema, perioral dermatitis or rosacea. Normally £60, it's currently in Medik8's summer sale, making it a more affordable £48 for a short while. Trust me and my sore face, it's worth the price. Since my own results have been so good, I wondered whether others have experienced similarly impressive results. A quick scan of the product page told me yes, I'm in good company. One reviewer writes: 'A beautiful cream which has transformed my skin following extensive damage to my skin barrier, thankyou!' A second adds: 'Love this cream- super nourishing and rich without being greasy. Helps me skin look plump and hydrated in the morning,' with a third saying: 'I like this cream very much. It is light and not too greasy and it smells nice. It makes my skin glow and gives it protection overnight.' 'I love the texture of this cream. I usually use my liquid peptide serum before and I apply Advanced Night Restore. These two are my favourite combination. Great texture, absorbs quickly and makes my skin feel hydrated,' pens a fourth. While I have no negative things to say about the cream, other than its usual RRP being a little high at £60 for a 50 ml tub, I do think you can get good repairing results with other lower-cost products as well. If it's a peptide-packed formula you're looking for, The Inkey List's Peptide Moisturiser is a good alternative for £16. With a dual peptide formula that aims to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and balance the skin's natural oil levels, it has plenty of calming goodness for those, like me, who have overdone their actives. Plus, if you shop it this week, you can use the code SUMMER20 to get 20% off it.
