This Moisturiser Is A Tonic For Sensitive Skin Prone To Acne, Flaking And Excess Oil
My job means I'm constantly throwing active ingredients at my face. Retinols here, acids there. A hefty dose of niacinamide for good measure. While I know my skin well (and what it can and can't tolerate) I've learnt to recognise when it's time to strip things back again. When my skin needs something cosseting, calming and soothing, I make a point of listening. To set the scene, I have combination skin prone to blemishes and acne. Thanks to a dermatologist appointment just over a year ago, I now know that this is caused by hormonal fluctuations. I can remember the utter despair I felt when I made that first appointment. My skin was dull and flaking. Oily across my t-zone with a smattering of spots around my chin. I was embarrassed, and I was sore. She advised I drop everything from my routine aside from a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. It felt simple, but it transformed by complexion quickly. While one year later I have gradually reintroduced stronger actives, the moisturiser I reach for when my skin's in need of some serious TLC remains the same - the one recommended to me that very day. Enter Medik8's Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream, £48. It's no frills. But it's as efficacious as they as they come. In my naivety, I didn't know acne prone skin had the potential to glow, but this proved me wrong. Here's why I still swear by it when my skin's feeling out of sorts. Formulated to deliver up to 100 hours of hydration, this moisturiser is a must-have for anyone looking to repair a compromised skin barrier. If you feel you've overdone it with active ingredients (signs to look out for are redness, flaking or blemishes) or your skin is just in need of a pep up, this one could be an excellent solution. It combines hyaluronic acid with clinically proven ingredients that support both the skin barrier and microbiome. Use it morning and night to soothe, calm and deeply nourish the skin. 1. Medik8 Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream Rachael Martin, beauty director says: 'You'd be forgiven for thinking this one isn't all that exciting, but truthfully, it's as good as it gets. No frills, yes. But if you're after a solid moisturiser that helps restore your skin barrier and leaves you with healthier, more radiant skin in the long run? This one's a winner. Oh, and it's refillable.' Pros Suited to all skin types Luxurious formula, but will sink in quickly The customer reviews are incredibly impressive Cons Heavy pot - can make travelling a little tricky. I've been using this both morning and evening to replenish my complexion. A walnut-sized amount, smoothed over the face, neck and décolletage, is enough to temper any tightness and help reduce flaking. Rachael Martin, Beauty Director, says: 'For over a year now this has been an old reliable - I'll come back to it time and time again. It's skincare with no frills- but all the function. Firstly, a moment for the myriad of calming ingredients I swear by when I've overdone it. The star is the prebiotic peptide, which helps balance the skin's microbiome while strengthening the barrier. A strengthened barrier means skin that looks and feels healthier in the long run, and I always see the difference when I've taken some time out to bolster mine, especially where blemishes are concerned. Then there's hyaluronic acid- it's well known for attracting and retaining more than 1,000 times its weight in water. It leaves my skin feeling soft, supple and soothed. And let's not forget the skin-saving heroes, ceramides and lipids. Naturally found in the skin barrier, ceramides, squalane and vitamin F mimic the skin's own lipids to nourish, replenish and visibly restore. It's a clever, comforting formula that feels gorgeous on my skin. Slightly thicker and more cosseting than my usual moisturiser, it takes a few seconds to sink in- but don't be put off. It's non-comedogenic meaning it won't clog pores. Once it does sink in, that's when the magic happens. My skin is left looking brighter, and calmer. If applying before bed my skin appears more even in tone come morning - there's a real glow there and its more even tone and texture too. In the morning it also works a treat. A small amount leaves my skin perfectly prepped for make-up- almost like a primer. It reminds me of Embryolisse, a cream I used to love-except that one, sadly, made my sensitive skin break out. With this, my skin looks fresh, bouncy and plump. And, crucially, after just three days of swapping this one back into my routine my acne always appears reduced.' You'd be forgiven for thinking this one isn't all that exciting, but truthfully, it's as good as it gets. No frills, yes. But if you're after a solid moisturiser that helps restore your skin barrier and leaves you with healthier, more radiant skin in the long run? This one's a winner. Oh, and it's refillable. ‘Glass skin' glow-boosting lotion improves skin in four hours
This new lightweight milky lotion is already drawing praise from users for hydrating, calming and visibly improving skin in days – or even hours – and it's perfect for summer If you sometimes find that traditional face creams and moisturisers feel too rich and heavy on your skin in summer – or that your skin's feeling especially stressed or irritated – you might love this gorgeous new barrier-boosting milk, clinically proven to improve your skin in four hours. Popular skincare brand FaceTheory has just dropped its new Ectoin BarrierBuild Milk, priced at £22, a "lightweight layerable milk" containing trending ingredient ectoin, Lactobacillus ferment, upcycled oat milk and tremella mushroom. Its benefits include reducing redness, calming irritation and improving skin tone and texture, with those who have used it noticing results within days. "I have used this product for over 10 days and I can notice my skin is improved," one person wrote. "My skin can get dry, blemished or irritated depending on the weather or hormones. After starting using this product morning and evening I noticed my skin is better hydrated, softer and smoother. My skin tone is improved, no more dull skin. Redness and irritation areas are better than before. This product is light, not sticky and not heavy, my skin absorbs it easily. Definitely recommend it." "I struggle a lot with combined skin so it can go from dry to oily, this product has been a game changer," another agreed. "It's helped with my uneven skin tone in just a few days. It's light on the skin and melts in, you only need a small amount of product. My redness on my face has also gone down. And it gives me moisture but doesn't make my face oily. It's great for sensitive skin as doesn't make your skin sore or sting." "When it says it strengthens the skin in just four hours – it actually does," one person wrote. "My skin would usually feel very tight and stripped after washing but after using this it instantly helped my skin feel hydrated and silky! The only thing to improve would be the texture as it dries up really quickly. But overall – LOVE it!" FaceTheory advises that it can either be used on its own or in between other skincare. If you want to buy a full FaceTheory routine that suits sensitive skin, we recommend its HydraCleanse Rebalancing Gel Cleanser, £12, and HydraOat Soothing Daily Moisturiser, £16. If you have drier skin, you might instead prefer something like Medik8's Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream, £48 – a favourite with our beauty editor – or Skin Rocks The Moisturiser, £58.

‘This new vitamin C serum is the only one that doesn't irritate my problem skin'
'I've been testing out this new skin-brightening vitamin C serum for months and can confirm it's a game-changer for blemish-prone skin like mine,' says our beauty editor Skin experts agree that vitamin C is one of the best skincare ingredients you can add to your routine, proven to be effective at brightening and evening the skin, defending against future damage, and tackling other signs of ageing. Vitamin C serums and creams, though, aren't always tolerated well by all skin types, including sensitive or spot-prone complexions – both of which apply to me. However, I've been testing Medik8's brand new serum, and it's a game-changer for problem skin like mine. Medik8 already makes a few hugely popular vitamin C serums, including the original C-Tetra (a longtime favourite with beauty editors) and C-Tetra Luxe (which has a richer texture). However, both of these are oil-based consistencies, which can block pores in blemish-prone – something I've certainly found in the past. Now Medik8 has just launched its C-Tetra Advanced serum, priced at £69, an effective formula containing 20% stabilised vitamin C in a gel-serum texture, designed to get visibly brighter skin and reduced wrinkles in just seven days. I received a bottle of Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced a few weeks ago ahead of its launch and I've been using it almost every morning since. I was a little dubious about trying it as Medik8's existing vitamin Cs haven't been right for me, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this one; the formula is like a very light, runny cream instead of an oil, sinks into skin quickly, and layers brilliantly with my other skincare and make-up products (I currently follow it with Medik8's brilliant Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream and my favourite Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50+ Superlight Mineral SKINSCREEN). It did give a slight immediate brightening and evening out effect to my face, but it was about about a week of using it that I really started to notice a difference: my skin felt my much softer and smoother, looked generally more healthy, and my foundation looked fresher and less patchy. I didn't also get any breakouts or irritation (use it every other day at first if you're unsure). Of course, other factors may have affected this result, but I'm thrilled to have finally found a high-performance vitamin C serum that suits my skin. One point I'd flag is that it's not as hydrating as soon of my other favourite serums; usually I can go straight from serum to SPF in the mornings, but using this, I do need to apply a moisturiser in between. For this reason I think that this new launch is best for those with combination-to-oily skin, while anyone with dry skin should probably go for one of Medik8's other vitamin Cs (there's a handy tool on the website to help you to decide which is right for you). C-Tetra Advanced is also quite highly fragranced (probably because vitamin C doesn't usually smell very pleasant); this isn't something I have an issue with, but if you're skin is very sensitive to scent, you may want to go for something like CeraVe Skin Renewing 10% Pure Vitamin C Serum, £29. If you're looking for more alternatives, Facetheory Glow-C Vitamin C 20% Serum contains the same level of vitamin C (20%) but even cheaper at £23.
