‘This new vitamin C serum is the only one that doesn't irritate my problem skin'

Daily Mirror03-06-2025
'I've been testing out this new skin-brightening vitamin C serum for months and can confirm it's a game-changer for blemish-prone skin like mine,' says our beauty editor
Skin experts agree that vitamin C is one of the best skincare ingredients you can add to your routine, proven to be effective at brightening and evening the skin, defending against future damage, and tackling other signs of ageing. Vitamin C serums and creams, though, aren't always tolerated well by all skin types, including sensitive or spot-prone complexions – both of which apply to me. However, I've been testing Medik8's brand new serum, and it's a game-changer for problem skin like mine.
Medik8 already makes a few hugely popular vitamin C serums, including the original C-Tetra (a longtime favourite with beauty editors) and C-Tetra Luxe (which has a richer texture). However, both of these are oil-based consistencies, which can block pores in blemish-prone – something I've certainly found in the past. Now Medik8 has just launched its C-Tetra Advanced serum, priced at £69, an effective formula containing 20% stabilised vitamin C in a gel-serum texture, designed to get visibly brighter skin and reduced wrinkles in just seven days.
I received a bottle of Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced a few weeks ago ahead of its launch and I've been using it almost every morning since. I was a little dubious about trying it as Medik8's existing vitamin Cs haven't been right for me, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this one; the formula is like a very light, runny cream instead of an oil, sinks into skin quickly, and layers brilliantly with my other skincare and make-up products (I currently follow it with Medik8's brilliant Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream and my favourite Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50+ Superlight Mineral SKINSCREEN).
It did give a slight immediate brightening and evening out effect to my face, but it was about about a week of using it that I really started to notice a difference: my skin felt my much softer and smoother, looked generally more healthy, and my foundation looked fresher and less patchy. I didn't also get any breakouts or irritation (use it every other day at first if you're unsure).
Of course, other factors may have affected this result, but I'm thrilled to have finally found a high-performance vitamin C serum that suits my skin.
One point I'd flag is that it's not as hydrating as soon of my other favourite serums; usually I can go straight from serum to SPF in the mornings, but using this, I do need to apply a moisturiser in between. For this reason I think that this new launch is best for those with combination-to-oily skin, while anyone with dry skin should probably go for one of Medik8's other vitamin Cs (there's a handy tool on the website to help you to decide which is right for you).
C-Tetra Advanced is also quite highly fragranced (probably because vitamin C doesn't usually smell very pleasant); this isn't something I have an issue with, but if you're skin is very sensitive to scent, you may want to go for something like CeraVe Skin Renewing 10% Pure Vitamin C Serum, £29.
If you're looking for more alternatives, Facetheory Glow-C Vitamin C 20% Serum contains the same level of vitamin C (20%) but even cheaper at £23.

I tested three sunscreens designed to sit over make-up — budget option was my favourite

A NEW breed of sun protection designed to sit over make-up has hit shelves, meaning topping up your SPF thoughout the day is easy. But be warned – you still need to apply a proper sunscreen underneath, as they won't give you enough protection alone. BUDGET Garnier Vitamin C UV Mist £12.99 for 75ml The first time I used this mist I thought it was broken, given that my eyes were closed and I didn't feel a single thing hitting my face. So to double check, I applied it to my arm – keeping my eyes open – and it turns out, it's just so lightweight you won't notice it at all. In fact it's so good that we've just crowned it the winner of Best Face Sunscreen in this year's Fabulous Beauty Awards. It doesn't make my eyes sting, cause breakouts or ruin my make-up. All in all, it's exactly what I want from an SPF. MID-RANGE Naked Sundays SPF50+ Hydrating Glow Mist, £18 for 50ml, Full transparency, I didn't think I'd like this, given the name. I usually run from anything labelled glowy as I have extremely oily skin, so I prefer products that help reduce shine rather than add to it. As expected, it does leave skin incredibly glowy – yet like magic, it doesn't feel wet or sticky on. In fact, it dries surprisingly fast, almost like a setting spray. I love that it's a non-aerosol mist, as they are easier to pack and better for the planet. But I do find it means the spray can be inconsistent and sometimes feel a little too wet, so make sure you shake it well before using. LUXURY Supergoop! (Re)setting Powder SPF 30, £29 for 4.25g, I first tried this product a couple of years ago in the US, but now it's available at Boots so I've finally been able to restock! I love how versatile the powder is. You can use it over your face in the same way you would a setting powder, and it also works on the scalp, acting almost like a dry shampoo to absorb moisture while helping prevent sunburn. But reapplying it multiple times becomes tricky, as it can end up looking cakey, so I find it works best in tandem with a face mist (SPF or otherwise) to add some moisture back into skin. But if you're worried about shine, it's a no-brainer.

Gorgeous smell great for everyday use and good for sensitive skin," remarked another. While another person noted: "Not 100 % sure of this. Loved the cream cleanser. The Color Wow Dream Cocktail, is popular amongst LOOKFANTASTIC shoppers, with one customer penning on the site: "This is the best thing I have ever bought. "It makes my blonde hair so soft and smooth. It makes it very easy to style. It's not greasy. This will now be my forever favourite hair routine." Another reviewer commented: "So far so good! "It seems to help with my split ends", whilst a further purchaser concluded: "Great product, leaves my hair very soft and smells amazing, will buy again." Shoppers did have some observations to share, with one noting on LOOKFANTASTIC: "Bought this as kept seeing it on socials, so I had really high hopes. It's ok, smells nice, but not really giving me the WOW factor that I'd hoped for." The Manucurist active glow polish has similarly received excellent ratings. One customer remarked: "Lovely natural look. Very happy with this product." A different buyer stated: "Great finish, but the colour is not right for my skin tone, but it does work really well with Active Smooth treatment." Nevertheless, someone else commented: "Got this as part of my beauty box and absolutely love it! Just gives a mirror shine and makes nails look healthier without any garish colours."

‘I found how to get a £42 Medik8 serum for £5 in a beauty deal that saves over £150'

Genevieve Turley, the make-up artist you've undoubtedly seen all over your Instagram and TikTok feeds, has launched her very own limited-edition beauty box, with huge savings to be had Beauty boxes are a fantastic way to sample new products, replenish your existing favourites or treat someone to a bumper beauty bundle. They often come with massive savings too – and here's a brand new one that offers you incredible products and value for money. OK! Beauty Box has joined forces with make-up artist and social media sensation Genevieve Turley – whose hilarious and down-to-earth videos you've likely seen on your Instagram or TikTok feed – to create her very own limited-edition beauty edit, featuring 11 of her favourite skincare and make-up products from top brands such as Medik8, Rodial and Gatineau. Impressively, 10 of the 11 products inside are full size – including a cult classic Medik8 serum – and the total value comes to over £210, yet the box usually costs £59.99 to purchase. However, there's a way for Mirror readers to save even more. Purchase it now through this link, or by using the code MIRRORGEN at the checkout, and you'll get it for £54.99 instead of £59.99, while stocks last. This means a whopping £155 saving, and means that each of the 11 products inside can be thought of as having a value of £4.99 each. In our exclusive chat with Gen, she said, "I've had so many beauty boxes over the years and always thought, 'What would I put in mine?' So when this happened I was delighted – and prepared! I wanted great products that will make a big impact for women. "This box is a great opportunity to try products you may not have heard of or been afraid to splurge on, but with the massive saving, it takes away that worry." For me, the standout item inside is Medik8 C-Tetra. An absolute cult favourite skincare product and a go-to amongst countless beauty experts (myself included), this is a brilliant, foolproof vitamin C serum that moisturises and brightens the complexion, and has almost 1,500 five-star reviews on the Medik8 website alone. Gen reveals that "it really helped reduce my pigmentation from my second pregnancy". A full-size 30ml bottle (which is what you receive in the box) costs £42 alone, so for an additional £13 you're getting 10 other beauty products alongside it. Other standouts inside include a £39 dewy Rodial blush, a luxe brown eyeliner pencil and "one of [Gen's] favourite products of this year", Gatineau Collagene Expert Hydra Essence. But honestly, there's not a disappointing product in here – everything's incredibly wearable and simple to use, even if you're not a make-up expert. Here's a list of everything you get inside: Medik8 C-Tetra Lipid 7% Vitamin C Radiance Serum - 30ml full-size, worth £42 Rodial Blush Drops in the shade Apricot Sorbet - 15ml full-size, worth £39 Delilah Eye Line Long Wear Retractable Pencil in the shade Twig - 0.312g full-size, worth £23 Pixi EOD Cleansing Oil - 150ml full-size, worth £14 Gatineau Collagene Expert™ Hydra Essence - 30ml travel-size, worth £14 Makeup Revolution Bright Light Highlighter in the shade Radiance Bronze - 3ml full-size, worth £8 Sunkissed Curl & Flex Waterproof Mascara in the shade Black - 10g full-size, worth £5.99 Pippa of London Defining Lip Liner in the shade 601 Gerana - full-size, worth £15 Pippa of London Supermatte Lipstick in the shade 404 Scala - full-size, worth £19 Dr. Paw Paw Shea Butter Lip Balm - 25ml full-size, worth £9.25 Brushworks Dewy Fine Mist Setting Spray - 150ml full-size, worth £6.99 A voucher to redeem for four copies of OK! Magazine - RRP £18.40 However, if you're not a big fan of make-up, this box might not be for you as over half of the products are make-up items. You might be more interested in a skincare-focused box like Lookfantastic's The Skin Renewal Edit, which is valued at £210 but costs £45, or the Boots X Supergoop! Beauty Bag Edit, priced at £44 but worth over £90 (we've reviewed this one here). If you're keen on getting your hands on the OK! Beauty Box by Genevieve Turley, I wouldn't wait, as I predict it will be snapped up quickly.
