T.N. govt. to offer 50 citizen services through WhatsApp, says Minister

The Hindu25-04-2025

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to offer 50 citizen services through WhatsApp in the first phase, Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services Palanivel Thiaga Rajan said in the Assembly on Friday.
In his reply to the demand for grants for the Information Technology and Digital Services Department, he said the government was providing 260 citizen services through 34,843 e-seva centres to ensure easy access. At a cost of ₹3.85 crore, 50 services, including utility bill payments, would be provided through WhatsApp in the first phase.
Among several agencies which offer Aadhaar enrolment services, the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has been operating 266 Aadhaar Enrolment Centres at the Collectorates, the corporation and municipality head offices and zonal offices, and the block development offices. Steps would be taken to open 50 new such centres this year, the Minister said.
Since e-Know Your Customer (KYC) is becoming mandatory for Aadhaar-linked welfare schemes, the government will introduce a mobile application and web platform for e-KYC, he said.
Further, through the Tamil Virtual Academy, special training programmes, including the use of Artificial Intelligence in translation and natural language processing, will be conducted for students of Tamil literature. The government will also take steps to provide high-speed internet services to households at a low cost, he added.

Airtel cracks down on online fraud in T.N., blocks 1,80,000 malicious links

As part of the nationwide rollout of its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered fraud detection system, Airtel has blocked over 1,80,000 malicious links and safeguarded more than 3 million users across the State. Automatically enabled for all Airtel mobile and broadband customers, the advanced system scans and filters links across SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, e-mail, and other browsers. It leverages real-time threat intelligence to examine over 1 billion URLs daily and blocks access to harmful sites in under 100 milliseconds, said the Airtel in a press release. For instance, if a resident in Salem receives a suspicious message that reads: 'Your package is delayed. Track it here: And if the unsuspecting resident then clicks on the link, Airtel's system also clicks into gear. It instantly scans the link and if flagged as suspicious, it blocks access. The user is redirected to a warning message that reads: 'Blocked! Airtel found this site dangerous!' All this instantaneously. This real-time interception prevents users from falling victim to all kinds of frauds. Tarun Virmani, CEO-Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Bharti Airtel, said that at a time when digital threats were becoming more advanced and widespread, the need for a strong and dependable secure mobile network was more essential than ever. Commenting at the event, Sandeep Mittal, Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, said: 'We are pleased that the Airtel team informed us and offered a comprehensive overview of their initiative for fraud detection solutions, detailing its goals and operational methodology.'

Conmen siphon 21L from New Town man

Kolkata: A New Town resident fell victim to a cyber investment fraud, losing Rs 21,40,700 through a modus operandi that mimicked legitimate financial services. The scam started when Bhanja Kishore Mohanty, a resident of Action Area-III, clicked an Instagram link that eventually added him to a WhatsApp group aimed at "wealth generation". The group was allegedly led by one Ashish Kehair, who claimed to be the managing director, with an assistant named Kangna Sharma, the managing operations. The fraudsters orchestrated an elaborate scheme involving block trading, preferential allotments, and IPO investments. To establish credibility, they allowed Mohanty to withdraw Rs 2,000 early in the scheme. Between April 7 and May 21, Mohanty made multiple investments. The fraud came to light when he attempted to withdraw Rs 5 lakh on May 5 after a supposed IPO sale. A similar withdrawal attempt on May 22 led to the same result. "The withdrawal was rejected, and the scammers demanded an additional 'commission' of Rs 29 lakh followed by a 'subscription service charge' of Rs 28 lakh," said a cop. "They asked me to pay upfront and refused to adjust them against my invested funds," said Mohanty. "When I questioned this, they stopped responding."

Tatkal booking will require Aadhaar authentication from July 1

NEW DELHI: From July 1, only users who have authenticated their account with Aadhaar will be able to book Tatkal tickets through its website and app. To make the process more fool-proof, the use of OTP for Aadhaar authentication will be introduced from July 15, the railway ministry said on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The new norms have been notified to check malpractices by agents and ensure that only genuine passengers benefit from the Tatkal scheme. The ministry has urged people to ensure Aadhaar linkage with their IRCTC user profiles to avoid inconvenience. Even to buy paper tickets at rail ticket windows from July 15, passengers or their representatives will have to provide a mobile number on which an OTP will be sent for verification purposes. 'Certain provisions have also been made to ensure that bots (or other software means) are not able to book tickets faster than genuine users,' a senior railway official said. As per the notification, authorised ticketing agents will not be permitted to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window, a move aimed at preventing bulk bookings during this critical period. 'For AC classes, this restriction will apply from 10 am to 10.30 am, and for non-AC classes, from 11 am to 11:30 am,' it said. Around 2.2 lakh passengers book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website and app daily. An analysis of online Tatkal ticket booking patterns from May 24 to June 2 by the railways showed that on average 5,615 out of 1.1 lakh AC tickets were booked in the first minute after the window opened. Another 22,827 tickets were booked in the second minute. In the non-AC category, an average of around 1.2 lakh tickets were booked online per day. Of these, 4,724 tickets were booked in the first minute and 20,786 in the second minute.
