MB: Circular economy coming to Selangor within two years, with pilot recycling projects in Shah Alam, PJ and Subang

Malay Mail06-07-2025
KLANG, July 6 — Selangor is expected to implement a circular economy framework within the next two years, says Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said pilot projects, including the SelKitar initiative and an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling programme, are already underway to instil circular economy practices among the public.
'We are building up the system gradually. It is not just about earning a few ringgit from recycling. The real challenge is establishing a comprehensive, functioning ecosystem,' he told reporters after launching the 'Plastic-Free Campaign 2025: Series 2' here today.
Amirudin said the circular economy is likely to begin in urban areas such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam, which are suitable testbeds due to their urban infrastructure and urban lifestyle.
A circular economy promotes waste reduction by reusing, recycling, upcycling and repurposing materials for as long as possible, thereby preserving resources, reducing emissions and adding economic value.
In August 2024, the Housing and Local Government Ministry launched the Solid Waste Circular Economy Action Plan 2025-2035 to guide stakeholders through this transition, focusing on five key pillars, namely governance and legislation, guidelines and procedures, digitalisation and technology, infrastructure and facilities, as well as market development.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said Selangor is finalising bylaw amendments across 12 local councils to expand the implementation of the 'No Plastic Bag Day' policy.
'All councils will be briefed before the amendments are tabled at the next State Legislative Assembly sitting,' he added. — Bernama

Cautious start for Bursa amid Wall Street gains, tariff tensions

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Bursa Malaysia edged slightly higher on Thursday after a weak start, as investors took a cautious cue from Wall Street's overnight gains ahead of a closely watched tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump. At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 0.06 of a point to 1,541.54 from Wednesday's close of 1,541.48. The benchmark index had earlier opened 0.98 of a point lower at 1,540.50. Market breadth was slightly negative, with decliners outpacing gainers 176 to 131. A total of 261 counters were unchanged, 1,937 untraded, and nine suspended. Turnover stood at 139 million shares worth RM68.11 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the stronger overnight performance on Wall Street was buoyed by an additional US$100 billion investment by Apple Inc, bringing its total planned spending to US$600 billion over the next few years. 'However, investors remain cautious on the latest report that Trump may impose a 100 per cent tariff on imported semiconductors. 'Additionally, trading has been lacklustre due to the absence of fresh catalysts. Therefore, we expect the local bourse to mirror this trend and anticipate the index to hover within the 1,535–1,545 range today,' he told Bernama. Among the heavyweights, Maybank and Tenaga Nasional gained two sen each to RM9.65 and RM13.20, respectively, while Public Bank, CIMB and IHH Healthcare fell two sen each to RM4.28, RM6.79 and RM6.93. On the actively traded list, Pharmaniaga and SNS Network Technology inched down one sen each to 17.5 sen and 51 sen, TWL was flat at 2.5 sen, while Inari Amertron added three sen to RM1.89, and Top Glove rose half a sen to 62 sen. On the broader market, the FBM Emas Index fell 2.75 points to 11,530.15, the FBMT 100 Index slipped 2.42 points to 11,301.44, while the FBM Emas Shariah Index inched up 1.17 points to 11,537.76. The FBM 70 Index declined 15.92 points to 16,543.14, while the FBM ACE Index edged down 2.48 points to 4,598.41. By sector, the Financial Services Index eased 1.63 points to 17,541.01, the Industrial Products and Services Index trimmed 0.23 of a point to 157.53, the Energy Index shed 2.21 points to 735.41, and the Plantation Index slipped 2.42 points to 7,345.29. — Bernama

Pharmaniaga completes regularisation plan, set to exit PN17 by Q1 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Pharmaniaga Bhd has completed its Practice Note 17 (PN17) regularisation plan following the completion of its capital reduction exercise through the cancellation of RM520 million in issued share capital. In a statement yesterday, the pharmaceutical company said the step firmly sets the group on course to exit the PN17 status latest by the first quarter (1Q) of 2026. 'The capital reduction exercise, which involved the cancellation of RM520 million in issued share capital, was completed after confirmation was received today from the Registrar of Companies that all statutory requirements have been fulfilled. 'Following the completion of this exercise, the issued share capital of the group is RM249.62 million, comprising 6.55 billion shares,' it said. Pharmaniaga fell into PN17 status in February 2023, dragged by its RM552.3 million provision for 'slow-moving inventories' of Covid-19 vaccines. At the close of trading yesterday, the counter finished unchanged at 18.5 sen, with 28.69 million shares changing hands. — Bernama

Miti: Malaysia set for RM104b in 2025 investments, trade target unchanged despite global headwinds

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) has projected 2025's approved investments to amount to RM104 billion involving manufacturing and selected services sectors under the purview of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida). Its Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said this projection takes into account gross domestic product (GDP) forecast, projects currently under evaluation, and potential projects. 'Based on Mida's investment statistics, the first quarter of 2025 approved investments were RM89.8 billion, a 3.7 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. 'Therefore, considering the increasing trend of investment applications to Mida, the investment outlook is expected to maintain positive for the whole of 2025,' he said in a written reply on the Parliament's website yesterday in response to Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) who asked for the government's 2025 investment projection as well as the measures to ensure that export and investment values are not severely affected by rising US tariffs and global geopolitical uncertainty. Tengku Zafrul said the projection remains unchanged for now as the tariff impact is mainly felt by companies that rely heavily on the US market. He added that Miti currently has no plans to revise its 2025 trade growth targets despite the US imposing a 19 per cent tariff. Miti will continue to monitor current developments, especially exports to the US market, and formulate appropriate mitigation strategies, he said. 'Trade performance is expected to experience a slight decline in the second half of 2025 due to reduced demand from the US following the tariff enforcement. 'A more significant impact is expected to be felt in the first quarter of 2026, when trade activity resumes post-tariff implementation,' he said. Miti had previously projected a 5 per cent rise in Malaysia's total trade value to RM3.01 trillion against RM2.87 trillion in 2024. Meanwhile, he said US President Donald Trump's latest announcement on the 19 per cent tariff rate has opened a strategic opportunity for Malaysia to remain competitive alongside other trading partners, especially among Asean member states with similar tariff rates. 'It should be emphasised that Malaysia successfully secured a lower tariff rate without having to compromise on core policies or national sovereignty,' he said. However, he acknowledged that the tariff rate will still have an impact on export and investment performance, and in turn, affect Malaysia's economy. In the long term, he said the imposition of high reciprocal tariffs will cause a global economic slowdown, including in Malaysia, due to rising prices and declining demand, which will indirectly affect Malaysia's economic growth rate and the global economy in general. — Bernama
