In his brief remarks, Dennis commended the spirit of togetherness and harmony shown by the residents, adding that the annual celebration continues to be meaningful and lively even with a modest number of Muslims in Long Lama.
'I deeply appreciate the strong community ties among the various ethnic and religious groups in the area. Such unity is vital in fostering peace and understanding,' he said.

Revisiting Akka Nasi Lemak: Muslim foodies claim not racist, duty-bound to enquire stall's halal status

REMEMBER Akka Nasi Lemak Viral which gained plenty of online attention with its mouthwatering offerings first catching the eye several years ago with queues at her makeshift stall legendary in length and waiting time? Viral fame has promoted humble stall operator Sangeetha Manimalar to re-locate her stall into a permanent food court in Taman Puncak Jalil where her food continues to whet appetites and delight tummies. However, a feature on Facebook foodie site HeyFood Malaysia has descended into chaos over some misunderstandings over the halal status of Akka Nasi Lemak. A simple and oft-heard enquiry led to all manner of unpleasantness when one non-Muslim commenter labelled such a question as 'stupid'. This led to much name calling from offended Muslim commenters who quite rightly claimed that they are entitled to enquire. What is wrong with asking anyway, they queried, some rather indignantly. One response surmised that the trader would know how to cater to the majority of her customers. If they are mainly Muslim, then there should be an understanding that she has done the necessary to ensure her food is consistent with the dietary restrictions of her Muslim consumers. This somewhat laissez faire attitude brought heated responses from various commenters who argued that such was not the right approach. One commenter argued that the only time such reasoning was acceptable was during an emergency. This was when one commenter responded that it was easy as the choice was with the consumer. If unsure, take your appetite and custom elsewhere. There's no reason to pour scorn on the trader who has done nothing wrong. Another commenter sought to inject some perspective by suggesting that non-Muslims support Akka Nasi Lemak as the food did indeed look delicious. However, he politely advised Muslim foodies to dine at places where they are certain of their halal status. He also pointed out that if the Muslim lady who took the video had bought the food for a non-Muslim to consume, it is fine but not otherwise. Few things this episode highlights. First and foremost, the issue of halal/haram is not to be taken lightly. It is of great significance to Muslims and goes beyond food needing to be porcine-free. Secondly, any dining establishment looking to leverage on Muslim clientele will need to obtain the necessary certification. Or at the very least to put Muslim customers' minds at ease. Last but not least, a modicum of respect for each other's beliefs is paramount in a multi-ethnic country like Malaysia. Otherwise, the future looks pretty gloomy. – Aug 12, 2025 Main image credit: HeyFood Malaysia/Facebook

In Malaysia toilets sans bidets are often turned into a convenient excuse to bash Type C

IT HAS been said many times that almost everything in Malaysia is seen through race-tinted lens. Taking things to new depths was a discussion on the state of restroom facilities in shopping malls. why are Malaysia going backwards with no bidet toilets. I thought we are better than this? — Belle 🍉 (@hanabelIe) August 6, 2025 Grumbling on X, Belle (@hanabelle) argued the country was going backwards with the unavailability of bidets in toilets at retail complexes which she went on to label washrooms with such facility as 'disgusting'. Somehow the discussion was turned into a heated debate on race with the hygiene habits of the Chinese who are associated with high preference for toilet rolls over water being put under scrutiny. One commenter argued that since the Chinese business community controlled these shopping malls, everyone else had to follow their filthy habits. To further illustrate the point that the Chinese entrepreneurs were calling the shots at shopping outlets, it was pointed out that many malls observed the practice of avoiding the digit '4' in numbering its floors. The commenter claimed that this practice of naming levels '3A, 13A and 3A3A' would inevitably be followed by these new-styled bidet-free toilets. He also laughed off suggestions to install Nippon-style high-tech toilets, arguing that citizens here simply lacked the discipline. One commenter blamed the mall managements for forcing these unhygienic practices on Muslim customers. Some commenters sought to deflect the blame towards mainland Chinese, claiming that local Chinese are of the bidet-loving variety. It's the Mat Salleh's fault and their colonialist mentality, cried a few commenters! The bidet-free facilities were the result of foreign direct investment (FDI), argued one commenter. The actual reason is probably even more embarrassing. Malaysians, regardless age, gender or race, still lack the required toilet etiquette. Splashing indiscriminately making the toilet a wet mess is probably why so many malls do not install bidets. Only in Malaysia can toilet-habits be turned into a racial issue. Actual truth of the matter is that its citizens just lack the etiquette to know how to properly use a public toilet. And that's just the sh**ty truth. – Aug 11, 2025 Main image credit: Cleveland Clinic

Fire extinguished, historic mosque-cathedral in southern Spain ‘saved'

MADRID: A fire broke out in the historic mosque-turned-cathedral in Cordoba on Friday but the monument was saved as firefighters quickly contained and then extinguished it, the Spanish city's mayor said. Widely shared videos had shown flames and smoke billowing from inside the major tourist attraction, visited by two million people per year. 'The monument is saved. There will be no spread, it will not be a catastrophe, let's put it that way,' Mayor Jose Mara Bellido said on Cadena television. Later, he said the fire, which the fire brigade had earlier described as under control, was now extinguished. 'Luckily, the rapid and magnificent intervention of the Cordoba firefighters averted a catastrophe. The fire is now out, and tonight firefighters and local police teams will remain on site to avoid any risk,' the mayor posted on X. The spectacular blaze had broken out around 9:00 PM (1900 GMT), raising fears for the early medieval architectural gem and evoking memories of the 2019 fire that ravaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. ABC and other newspapers reported that a mechanical sweeping machine had caught fire in the site. Considered a jewel of Islamic architecture, the site was built as a mosque -- on the site of an earlier church -- between the 8th and 10th centuries by the southern city's then Muslim ruler, Abd ar-Rahman, an emir of the Umayyad dynasty. After Christians reconquered Spain in the 13th century under King Ferdinand III of Castile, it was converted into a cathedral and architectural alterations were made over following centuries. - AFP
