Meaningful Aidiladha celebration for Long Lama Muslims

MIRI (June 8): The Muslim community in Long Lama did not miss out on the opportunity to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha on Saturday despite their relatively small population in the area. Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau was present to join in the celebration and extended his festive greetings to the community. In his brief remarks, Dennis commended the spirit of togetherness and harmony shown by the residents, adding that the annual celebration continues to be meaningful and lively even with a modest number of Muslims in Long Lama. 'I deeply appreciate the strong community ties among the various ethnic and religious groups in the area. Such unity is vital in fostering peace and understanding,' he said. Among those present were Masjid Darussalam Long Lama chairman Dato Dr Abu Bakar Abdullah @ Tom Belarek. Dennis Ngau Hari Raya Aidiladha Long Lama

Telang Usan rep proposes green hydrogen-solar power project for Long Bedian

KUCHING (May 23): Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau has proposed the implementation of a large-scale green energy project in Long Bedian sub-district, aimed at providing 24-hour electricity to rural communities. The proposal was made during his debate on the Motion of Appreciation for Yang di-Pertua Negeri's speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today. 'Based on the Sarawak government's commitment to green energy initiatives, I would like to propose a solar and hydrogen energy system project in the Long Bedian sub-district of Telang Usan to meet the need for 24-hour electricity,' said Dennis. 'This would be a large-scale pilot project following the proven success of a similar system at the Long Loyang Health Clinic,' he added. If implemented, the project would be the first of its kind in Malaysia, he said. According to Dennis, the proposed solar-hydrogen system would supply electricity to households in nearby villages, government offices, schools, clinics, and even nearby oil palm plantations. 'It is time for us to move away from battery systems, diesel generators, and other environmentally harmful sources – including the cost of purchasing and supplying diesel – and shift towards a green hydrogen energy system,' he said. He emphasised that 24-hour electricity powered by green hydrogen would be more efficient than current systems and would improve the quality of life and well-being of rural communities. Dennis noted that the proposal follows the successful pilot of a hybrid solar-hydrogen system at the Long Loyang Health Clinic in Ulu Tinjar, which has been operational since its launch by State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, on August 8, 2022. 'The H2E1 system launched at Long Loyang Clinic is now ready to be expanded to off-grid rural villages in Sarawak,' he said. He urged the Sarawak government to implement this system in the state constituencies of N77 Telang Usan, N78 Mulu, and N76 Marudi to enable residents to enjoy uninterrupted electricity. 'Currently, 99 percent of settlements in N77 Telang Usan rely on solar systems under the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (Sares),' Dennis said. He expressed confidence that the proposed initiative aligns with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's call for Sarawak to advance the development of green and renewable energy sources. 'I believe it is time for Sarawak to take bold steps in expanding the implementation of the green hydrogen solar system,' he said. Dennis Ngau DUN electricity green energy Long Bedian

Len Talif: ITTO agreed to Upper Baram Forest Area project's termination, sole focus on Penan community undermined area's harmony

Datuk Len Talif Salleh KUCHING (May 20): The International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) agreed with the termination of the Upper Baram Forest Area (UBFA) project, said Datuk Len Talif Salleh. The Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment explained that the project titled 'Management of Upper Baram for Conservation and Sustainable Development with Involvement of Local Communities', which involved Bruno Manser Fonds (BMF), was terminated during the Steering Committee Meeting on Oct 10 last year. According to him, the project's termination was justified due to several reasons. 'BMF failed to comply with the conditions set by the Sarawak government by focusing solely on one ethnic group, the Penan, even though other communities such as the Kenyah, Kelabit, and Saban also have significant interests in the area. 'This approach risks undermining the harmony among the communities,' he explained during the question-and-answer session in the State Legislative Assembly today. He was responding to Dennis Ngau (GPS-Telang Usan), who had asked the ministry to clarify the termination of the UBFA project as well as the government's actions and plans for the communities within the affected area. Len Talif said BMF also intended to designate the area as a 'Purely Conservation Area' solely for the survival of the Penan community, even though a Totally Protected Area (TPA) already exists nearby. According to him, the project's termination would not adversely affect the livelihood of the communities in the area. 'This includes the Penan community, as various development projects and programmes aimed at improving their standard of living have been and will continue to be implemented by the Forest Department, ministries, departments, and other government agencies across various sectors,' he said. The Sarawak government has signed four Project Agreement Letters of Consent with the ITTO – two projects on March 20, 2023 and another two on Sept 9, 2024. Three of the projects are in Ulu Baram, while the fourth project is in Sungai Menyang, Lubok Antu. Since 1992, the Sarawak Forest Department has never cancelled any project signed with ITTO except for UBFA.

Long Aton residents urgently seek repairs for vital timber bridge

Screengrab from video shows the sorry state of the broken bridge leading to Long Aton in Ulu Tinjar, Baram. MIRI (May 7): Residents are calling on the authorities to urgently repair a vital timber bridge on the road to Long Aton settlement in Ulu Tinjar, which collapsed over a week ago. The collapse has jeopardised the movement of people and goods, with those affected including students and teachers at SK Long Aton and students studying at SMK Tinjar. The Kenyah settlement is located 210km from here. 'Nearly 300 people, including the villagers from the 48-door settlement are affected, and the broken bridge is now passable only by foot or motorcycle but impassable to four-wheel drive vehicles,' villager Gilbert Magok Lawrence told The Borneo Post. 'The condition of this bridge has worsened since February this year with erosion setting in. Now vehicles cannot pass through the road because the wooden logs under the bridge are also broken and have rotted away.' The school and village chiefs have raised the issue to the authorities, including Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau, who has pressed for expedited repairs. The broken bridge crosses Yang Paceik river, near Apau Nyaring village. Earlier this month, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the state government is aware of the infrastructure issues in Ulu Baram and acknowledged that the problems in the constituency are indeed significant. He will present a working paper outlining the procedures for maintaining these areas, including the many ageing and dilapidated bridges, during the next Cabinet meeting. Uggah has suggested that former logging roads in Ulu Baram that are currently classified as village roads should be upgraded to state roads to allow for higher maintenance funding under the Malaysian Road Records Information System. lead Long Aton timber bridge Ulu Tinjar

Miri to host two-day Dayak Cultural Carnival this June to celebrate unity, tradition

Dennis beats the gong to mark the launching of the Miri Divisional Gawai 2025 Karaoke Competition. MIRI (April 26): Miri is set to come alive this June with a two-day Dayak Cultural Carnival led by the Orang Ulu community, celebrating the rich traditions and talents of the Dayak people. Scheduled for either June 13 or 14, the carnival will feature a state-level Dayak Beauty Pageant (for both women and men), a Sape group competition, and traditional games such as a blowpipe contest. Organising chairman and Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau said preparations are progressing smoothly, with the final programme to be confirmed after a meeting on April 27. 'The community's strong support is very encouraging, and hopefully the prizes will help attract more participants,' he said during the launch of the 19th Miri Division Gawai Dayak Celebration's Dayak Songs Karaoke Contest 2025 at Boulevard Shopping Mall here today. The karaoke competition saw 16 participants competing for the champion title. Both the champion and runner-up will perform during the finals of the Miri Divisional Gawai Kumang, Keligit, Dayung Sangon, and Keling Contest on May 25. In his speech, Dennis praised the evolution of Gawai Dayak celebrations in Miri, noting how they have grown from simple dinners into full-fledged festivals featuring activities such as blood donation drives and children's art competitions. He also called on all communities to continue fostering unity and harmony. 'No matter our background, unity must come first,' he said. As part of his commitment to supporting local talent, Dennis pledged RM10,000 towards the Dayak Karaoke Contest. Dayak Cultural Carnival Dennis Ngau miri
