Rep: Two new state constituencies needed if Baram undergoes redelineation
MIRI (June 28): Two new state constituencies (DUNs) will be needed to complement the proposed creation of two parliamentary seats in Baram, should a redelineation exercise take place, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau.
He believes that the current Baram parliamentary constituency may be split into two, Upper Baram and Lower Baram.
'I don't know which part of Telang Usan will be carved out to form the new DUN, but perhaps we will find out during the special DUN sitting on July 7,' he said during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan Women's Wing Mother's Day and Father's Day dinner on Friday.
Dennis added that the existing Telang Usan, Mulu and Marudi state constituencies might be affected by the creation of a new DUN within the Baram parliamentary area – if this were to happen.
'It could involve taking small parts from each: some from Mulu, some from Telang Usan, and some from Marudi.
'However, I don't know the exact location. I've never been involved in any meetings discussing the proposed new DUN,' he confirmed.
Dennis disclosed that a total of 17 new DUNs and nine new parliamentary seats had been proposed, noting that the matter would be debated before being submitted to the federal government.
Moreover, Dennis also announced that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas would be invited to witness first-hand the condition of the logging road from Baram to the Bario Highlands via a convoy scheduled for next week.
'The three-day convoy, which I will also be joining, will depart from Miri this July 1.
'YB Datuk Amar Douglas and the rest of the entourage will travel upriver from Miri to Bario using the Baram road, to see with our own eyes the condition of our road.
'We are thankful to him for taking the time to spend three days with us on this journey,' he added.
Dennis also hailed the dinner as a platform to strengthen the bond and camaraderie among PBB members in Telang Usan and fellow members of the component parties within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
'To date, some 2,900 residents of Telang Usan are involved in the PBB, making it the largest political organisation in the area,' he noted. Baram Dennis Ngau redelineation

KUCHING : A political analyst has dismissed speculation of a behind-the-scenes leadership tussle within Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), affirming that Premier Abang Johari Openg and his deputy Awang Tengah Ali Hasan remain firmly aligned. Last month, FMT reported that a quiet battle was developing at the helm of the party, with factions linked to the two leaders quietly positioning themselves for a contest that could influence the state's political trajectory. But National Professors Council senior fellow Jeniri Amir said the two leaders share a longstanding bond grounded in party discipline and mutual respect — one they are unlikely to cast aside easily. 'Awang Tengah has always been loyal (to Abang Johari),' the former Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) academic said. Jeniri Amir. That loyalty, Jeniri noted, dates back nearly four decades to the 'Ming Court affair' in 1987, when then-chief minister Abdul Taib Mahmud survived an attempt by Abdul Rahman Ya'kub — his uncle and predecessor — to unseat him. 'At the time, the state was facing a possible political coup,' he said, recalling how 27 assemblymen withdrew support for Taib. Taib responded by dissolving the state assembly and calling fresh elections, narrowly defeating Rahman's newly-formed Persatuan Rakyat Malaysia Sarawak, which was later dissolved in 1991. 'If Taib had lost the 1987 state election, Rahman could have positioned someone else as the chief minister,' Jeniri explained. He credited Abang Johari with launching Awang Tengah's political career during that turbulent period. 'Not many people remember this, but it was Abang Jo who suggested that Awang Tengah be fielded as a candidate for the Lawas state seat at the height of the Ming Court affair.' Then just 24 years old, Awang Tengah won the seat uncontested and has represented the constituency — renamed Bukit Sari in 2006 — for nine consecutive terms. Jeniri said the Ming Court affair has had a lasting impact on PBB, instilling a culture of loyalty that continues to shape its leadership. 'When Abang Johari became premier in 2017 after Adenan Satem's death, Awang Tengah fully supported him,' he said. 'Let's not forget, Abang Johari was passed over once too. When Taib stepped down, many expected Abang Johari to take over as the chief minister. 'But it was Adenan who was chosen. Yet Abang Johari remained loyal and didn't create problems. That's how PBB maintains unity,' he said, referring to the dominant party within the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). Discipline, structure within PBB Jeniri described both leaders as products of PBB's disciplined and structured leadership culture — traits rarely seen in Peninsular Malaysian politics. 'They both understand party discipline. Even if there are ambitions, those are kept within the framework of the party. They don't go to war with each other,' he said. According to Jeniri, hierarchy, collaboration and discipline are core tenets of PBB's leadership model that are consistently upheld by Abang Johari and Awang Tengah. He also highlighted the complementary nature of the duo's working relationship, with Abang Johari setting out the state's strategic direction and Awang Tengah overseeing its execution. 'Abang Jo is transformative. He focuses on the digital economy, the green economy, and closing the rural-urban divide. Awang Tengah handles the implementation, especially in land matters, trade, industry and natural resources. 'This is how Sarawak ensures power-sharing. It's inclusive leadership, which is critical for political stability in a multi-ethnic state,' he said.

Embrace culture, explore digital economy, Orang Ulu told

In a speech for a Ngiling Bidai (closing of Gawai Dayak) dinner hosted by Persatuan Wanita Orang Ulu Miri (PWOUM) here on Sunday, the Telang Usan assemblyman praised the association's role in championing the community's traditions and empowering women. 'As a small community in Sarawak, unity is crucial for us Orang Ulu. When we speak with one voice, we are stronger and cannot be easily side-lined,' he said. Telang Usan rep urges rural students to embrace higher education opportunities

MIRI (July 29): Rural students are urged to seize the opportunity to further their studies to higher levels, taking advantage of various financial assistance schemes and other educational initiatives provided by the Sarawak government for a brighter future, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau. He said the Sarawak government has, over the years, taken proactive measures in the education sector to ensure that all Sarawakians, including those in rural areas, have access to quality education and the chance to improve their standard of living. 'Among the steps taken are through the state government's scholarship and financial aid programmes, which include various forms of scholarships, education loans and financial assistance such as the Yayasan Sarawak Scholarships, Yayasan Sarawak Study Loans and the Sarawak Tertiary Education Loan (STEL),' he said in his speech at the for Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas) Project of Dream Realised (Pro-DR) roadshow 2025 held at SMK Long Lama, Baram yesterday. His speech was delivered by his representative, Penghulu Desmond Yap. He further noted that the establishment of the Yayasan Sarawak International Schools is also a commendable initiative as it provides opportunities for high-achieving students from low- and middle-income families to access international-standard education either for free or at subsidised rates. Dennis, who also sits on the board of trustees for Tegas said the state government is equally attentive to the welfare of students in rural areas by working closely with the federal government to upgrade dilapidated schools and enhance educational facilities in the interior. 'These measures clearly reflect the Sarawak government's strong commitment to empowering its people through education, with the aim of nurturing competitive human capital prepared to face future challenges,' he added. On the outreach roadshow, Dennis said that the roadshow programme is a travelling education and career carnival organised by the Sarawak government through Tegas, with the support of the state Education Department. 'This edition of the roadshow features the participation of more than 30 institutions of higher learning and training, government agencies, and organisations offering financial assistance,' he said. He added that the main objective of the roadshow is to help rural students pursue their dream careers through education, regardless of their academic qualifications. 'Aside from the education fair and information booths on financial assistance, there are also side activities such as talks, exhibitions and interactive sessions aimed at raising awareness on digital innovation opportunities in TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), within the context of the digital economy,' he said. He called on all students, especially those in rural areas, to make full use of the opportunity to visit the booths and gather information about study opportunities, available courses and financial aid options. At the same function, Dennis also announced an allocation of RM15,000 for the establishment of a Tegas Think & Thinker (T&T) mini lab at SMK Long Lama. 'This is part of our efforts to improve the quality of education for students in the area, ensuring they are not left behind in terms of technological knowledge and that they have the opportunity to explore their talents in the field of innovation,' he said.
