"We welcome the declaration of Nilambur bye-election, though it is late": Kerala Congress President Sunny Joseph
Kannur (Kerala) [India], May 25 (ANI): Kerala Congress President Sunny Joseph on Sunday welcomed the declaration of bye-elections in Nilambur, stating that the poll would serve be a verdict against the anti-people policies and programs of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
'We welcome the declaration of the Nilambur byelection, though it is late. The UDF (United Democratic Front) and the Congress party are well prepared for the election... This election will be a verdict against the anti-people policies and programmes of the LDF (Left Democratic Front), their political atrocities, criminalisation of the police force, and the human-animal conflict being neglected by the government... ' Joseph told ANI.
He further mentioned that the candidate would be finalised at the earliest.
'We will finalise the candidate at the earliest. We are hopeful about the victory, that too, with a tremendous majority,' he added.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission of India (ECI) released the schedule for bye-elections in Nilambur, which is being held to fill the seat vacated by PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA who had resigned in January this year.
Anvar was later appointed as the convenor of the Kerala unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Meanwhile, the Election Commission also announced bye-election schedules for constituencies in Gujarat, Punjab, and West Bengal.
Polling in these constituencies will take place on June 19, with vote counting scheduled for June 23.
In Gujarat, bye-elections will be held in the Kadi and Visavadar constituencies to fill the vacancies left by the death of Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki in February and the resignation of Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai.
In Punjab, the bye-election will be held in Ludhiana West to fill the post of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi after his demise their January.
West Bengal's Kaliganj constituency will also see a bye-election to fill the seat left vacant after the death of Nasiruddin Ahamed, who passed away due to cardiac arrest in February this year.
On January 13, TMC leader PV Anvar, after his resignation, announced that he would not contest the Nilambur bye-election but would extend full support to the Congress candidate to end the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government. (ANI)

The prime minister also inaugurated two major engineering landmarks. One is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed, 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. It spans 1,315 metres and is part of the USBRL. It is engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. Located about 80 km from Jammu, it spans the Anji River and has been constructed by Hindustan Construction Company. The USBRL will cross a stretch of 271 km that includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. It has been built at a cost of Rs 43,780 crore. Before the final launch, several trial runs were conducted. In the last run, army and security personnel boarded the train as it passed over the Chenab Bridge to assess wind resistance and safety protocols. NEET PG 2025 exam date: The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET PG) 2025 has been postponed and will now be held on August 3, 2025, following an extension granted by the Supreme Court to the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The Supreme Court has also mandated that the exam be conducted in a single shift to ensure fairness and transparency. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) announced the postponement on May 27, 2025, after receiving the court's directive, as quoted by ANI. The postponement allows the authorities to expand test centres and upgrade infrastructure to meet the court's standards. Supreme court's directive on single-shift examination A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih emphasised that the exam must be held in one shift, as reported by ANI. Earlier, a vacation bench consisting of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and NK Anjaria had rejected NBE's two-shift plan, describing it as 'arbitrariness' and saying that 'the question papers in the two shifts can never be of the same difficulty level,' according to ANI. The court stressed the importance of providing a level playing field for all candidates and ordered the respondents to 'make necessary arrangements for holding the NEET-PG 2025 examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned,' as quoted by ANI. NBEMS also confirmed that the exam will now be conducted in a single shift, with the revised date notified in due course.
