LONDON – Liverpool will kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on Friday, Aug 15 while Arsenal head to Manchester United in a blockbuster clash on the opening weekend.
Arne Slot's champions have the chance to secure the first points of the new season at Anfield as they launch the 2025-26 campaign, bidding for a record 21st English top-flight crown.
Following the Bournemouth game Liverpool have tricky fixtures at Newcastle and at home to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, runners-up for the past three seasons.
Thomas Frank's first match as Tottenham boss will come on Aug 16 at home against newly promoted Burnley, while Sunderland make their return to the Premier League against West Ham.
The third newcomers, Leeds, play Everton on Monday, Aug 18.
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, who ended last season empty-handed, will be desperate to get off to a winning start against Wolves at Molineux.
Everton fans will have to wait until the second round of fixtures for their first league game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, when they will face Brighton.
Liverpool dominated the Premier League last season, romping to a record-equalling 20th title with four games to spare in Slot's first season in charge.
They have already strengthened their squad.
Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal, reportedly worth up to £116 million ($156 million) to sign Florian Wirtz along with his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong.
A deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is understood to be well-advanced.
Ruben Amorim's Manchester United, who will be desperate to hit the ground running after a terrible season, have been handed a tough test with a home game against Arsenal on Aug 17.
United finished 15th in the league, their lowest position since they were relegated in the 1973-74 season, and lost in the Europa League final against Tottenham.
Amorim has started a squad rebuild, bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
The season consists of 380 games over 33 weekends and five midweek rounds. It concludes on May 24 with matches including Manchester City against Aston Villa.
The Premier League said the start date 'allows for the maximum player rest time available – 83 clear days – from the end of the 2024-25 season'.

Congo to resume World Cup qualifiers after missing their matches
Congo will be allowed to continue participating in the World Cup qualifiers despite missing two fixtures in March when they were banned, world football's governing body FIFA said on Wednesday. Congo were suspended from February to May because of government interference in the running of their football association (FECOFOOT) but the ban was lifted when officials returned to their positions and were handed back access to their headquarters and technical training centre. Sports minister Hugues Ngouelondele had appointed an ad-hoc committee last year to run the association, claiming it needed to sort out disputes among association office bearers, but FIFA suspended FECOFOOT due to third-party interference, which violates its statutes. During the ban, Congo were not allowed to participate in any international competition, which meant they did not honour 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania and Niger in March. A FIFA spokesman told Reuters the points from those fixtures were forfeited and a 3-0 victory awarded to their opponents. But they will continue in the qualifiers when they resume in September, even if they have no chance of qualifying. Congo are scheduled to play Tanzania at home in September and conclude their fixtures in October with matches at Niger and Morocco. Congo have no points in the group, which Morocco lead with 15 points, six more than Tanzania in second place. The group winner qualifies for next year's World Cup in North America while the runner-up has a possibility to participate in playoffs if they are among the four best second-placed teams in the nine African qualifying groups. FIFA has taken a hard line on government interference in football matters with the likes of Chad, Kenya, Pakistan and Zimbabwe among those banned in recent years. England women to avoid 'awful' social media at European Championship
BURTON UPON TRENT, England - Alessia Russo, Lauren James and Lucy Bronze are among members of the England women's football team who plan to avoid social media at next month's European Championship in Switzerland because of its toxic environment. Russo said she prefers to stay off it at major tournaments, including the 2023 Women's World Cup during which she had someone else run her Instagram account. "I think every player might have a different story about that side of the game but it's definitely one that can be really damaging," the Arsenal forward told BBC Radio at St. George's Park. "I have faced it in the past and I think most players here have. When I was younger I probably got sucked into it more. I read it more than I should have and listened to it more than I should have. The only opinions that matter are (those of) my teammates, my coaches and my family." Russo's comments came after British tennis player Katie Boulter revealed she has received death threats to herself and members of her family after matches as players in that sport are increasingly subjected to online abuse through direct messages. Chelsea forward Lauren James said the abuse never really stops. "Sometimes it's not even to do with my performance, even when someone loses at FIFA (the EA Sports video game), my card scores against them and they're sending me abuse," James said. "I guess when it's your first time, though, maybe it might touch someone, but I'm used to it. I'm going to just brush it off my shoulder." Bronze said it was not just the players who receive negative comments. "People write horrible things and obviously our families read it as well and it can be upsetting if you see something that's not very nice," the Chelsea defender said.
