NT coach confident over Barcelona superstar's return to international commitment – ‘Will resolve this matter'

Yahoo7 hours ago
Poland national team coach Jan Urban has confirmed that he is working to resolve all remaining issues with Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski before the next international break.
The aim is to ensure the striker's smooth return to the national team after months of tension with the Polish Football Federation.
The conflict began during the time of former coach Michal Probierz, when Lewandowski clashed with the management of the national team.
The situation escalated after the forward decided not to feature in matches against Moldova and Finland earlier this year, citing the need to rest his body.
At the time, Lewandowski claimed his decision had been made with the agreement of the coach, but Probierz responded by stripping him of the captaincy.
With the departure of Probierz and the arrival of Urban, the relationship has taken a positive turn.
Lewandowski has agreed to rejoin the team, but the key question now is whether he will also regain the captain's armband.
The captaincy question
Speaking to Meczyki, Urban confirmed that the matter will be settled before the training camp.
'We will resolve this matter before the training camp begins. I want the players who arrive not to think about it so that they are focused on the games that are coming to us,' he explained.
The debate has also reached the fans. In a recent poll conducted by Meczyki, 82% of supporters voted for Lewandowski to regain the captaincy, with only 18% favouring Piotr Zielinski.
Urban acknowledged the public's view: 'The fans are in favour of Robert, I can say this,' he stressed.
Confident in Lewandowski's return
Urban recently revealed that he had already spoken directly to the Barcelona striker to secure his return to the national team.
'I spoke to Robert on the phone and asked him if he wanted to come back. He said yes, so we have taken a step forward.
'It would have been a very big problem if our best player, our star, stopped playing in the national team,' Urban said.
When asked again about the captaincy, the coach made it clear that he wanted to take into account the views of the squad before making his final decision.
'I not only want to talk to Robert, but also to those involved, Piotr Zielinski and other players. The decision is mine, but I want to listen to the players and know their opinions,' he added.

Trump course back on PGA schedule for 2026 season: tour

Donald Trump's famed Trump National Doral course will host a PGA Tour event next season, returning to the circuit after a 10-year absence, the tour confirmed on Tuesday. Doral's "Blue Monster" was a regular stop on the PGA circuit for more than half a century, hosting a tournament annually from 1962 to 2016, when it staged the WGC-Cadillac Championship. However the tournament was moved from Doral after sponsor Cadillac decided not to renew its sponsorship and a replacement sponsor could not be found. The PGA Tour, which had been sharply critical of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign rhetoric concerning immigrants, subsequently moved the event to Mexico -- prompting a furious reaction from Trump at the time. Doral has since hosted a stop on the Saudi Arabia-financed LIV Golf circuit. As of next season, however, the course will stage The Miami Championship, which will become one of the PGA Tour's nine signature events -- the elite tournaments that feature the world's best players and offer purses of $20 million. "We're excited to showcase the game's greatest players competing at golf's most iconic venues," PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp said in a statement to announce the 2026 schedule. "Inspired by our players and fans, we're accelerating the Tour's evolution and ushering in a new era of innovation on and off the course." The PGA Tour has had an uneasy relationship with avid golfer Trump over the past decade. The tour issued a statement in 2015 which said Trump's remarks about Mexican immigrants were "inconsistent with our strong commitment to an inclusive and welcoming environment in the game of golf". When the PGA Tour subsequently moved its WGC event to Mexico for commercial reasons following the failure to find a sponsor, Trump reacted angrily, describing it as a "sad day for Miami, the United States and the game of golf". "They're moving it to Mexico City," Trump said at the time. "I hope they have kidnapping insurance." Trump's relationship with the PGA Tour has improved in recent years however, with the US leader involved in peace talks between the tour and LIV Golf over a possible deal to unify the two rival circuits. rcw/nf

Torino allow Sanabria medical with Cremonese for €2.5m transfer

Torino have given the all-clear for Antonio Sanabria to have his medical ahead of a transfer to Cremonese worth €2.5m plus add-ons. The centre-forward was increasingly peripheral to the tactical vision at Torino following the arrival of coach Marco Baroni and striker Giovanni Simeone. The Paraguay international was eager to remain within Serie A and is all ready to join newly promoted Cremonese. According to Sky Sport Italia, the cost of the operation will be circa €2.5m plus performance-related bonuses. (Photo by) The 29-year-old was down to the final months of his contract with Torino, so it was their last chance to sell before he became a free agent. Sanabria was originally purchased from Real Betis for €6.5m plus up to €3m in add-ons back in January 2021. Although he scored 12 goals in 33 Serie A appearances in 2022-23, he was unable to replicate that form in his other campaigns. In 2023-24 there were just five goals, reduced to two with one assist last season.

Marseille say Adrien Rabiot decision taken ‘collectively' by Roberto De Zerbi, Mehdi Benatia, and Pablo Longoria

Olympique de Marseille have confirmed that Adrien Rabiot (29) has been placed on the transfer list, just one Ligue 1 match into the season. The France international joined OM last summer on a free transfer after leaving Juventus, and was left out of training sessions on Monday and Tuesday following the club's 1-0 defeat to Rennes on the opening day. According to , Marseille have made clear that the decision was taken collectively by president Pablo Longoria, sporting director Mehdi Benatia, and head coach Roberto De Zerbi, rather than by the latter alone – as claimed earlier in the day by Rabiot's mother and agent, Véronique. The midfielder's behaviour around Friday's fixture is said to have been a determining factor in OM's decision to separate from the player before the end of the transfer window. A formal statement from the club is expected in due course from Les Phocéens. |
