Gaming fans bring electric energy to Rotterdam as TwitchCon arrives

ROTTERDAM - A few metro stops from Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena, chatter is already flowing among gaming fans -- TwitchCon passes swinging from their necks, animal ears perched on their heads. The Dutch city is hosting TwitchCon this weekend -- the annual event run by United States streaming giant Twitch -- where fans can meet their favourite creators and join the celebrations. Thousands of fans from across Europe turned out to meet their favourite creators and watch live e-sports events, including Fortnite and Elden Ring, staged by Twitch celebrities. "Most of the work that happens on Twitch is online, it's digital," said Mary Kish, a marketing director at Twitch. "You're streaming with other people, you're hanging out with your community for many hours a week. "What happens at TwitchCon is the culmination of all of that goodwill and all of that joy in person at a con, and the energy is electric," said the 39-year-old, who is from the United States. French streamers JL Tomy and Etoiles -- who have 1.3 million and 1.2 million followers -- were also among those in attendance. "It's fun because there are lots of other partner streamers who are like me," said JL Tomy, 28, whose real name is Toma Abdellaoui. "I'm very much a homebody," said the streamer, whose content focuses on GTA, Valorant, League of Legends and e-sports competitions. Acquired by Amazon in 2014 for roughly $842 million, Twitch is the world's leading streaming platform for gaming, with more than 2.5 million hourly viewers on average. While gaming remains core to Twitch since its 2011 debut, the platform has broadened its reach, drawing in entertainment, sports and political figures, as well as livestreaming other major events. Kish said that Twitch's "Just Chatting" category is now its largest non-gaming segment. "There is a massive variety of other people doing other things. Like food and drink, where people are cooking... people who are showing their aquariums in their houses," Kish said. Reflecting that diversity, visitors attended theatre workshops, built Lego models, or watched the annual Drag Queen show, a TwitchCon staple. TwitchCon's next North American edition is scheduled for October 17–19, 2025, in San Diego.

Actors' union sues Fortnite over AI Darth Vader

LOS ANGELES - An actors' union is suing the makers of the Fortnite video game over the use of AI to create an interactive Darth Vader. Fortnite announced last week it had got permission from the family of James Earl Jones to make a chatty "Star Wars" villain based on the late actor's voice work in the smash hit space opera series. Using AI models, developer Epic Games introduced the Emperor's consigliere into Battle Royale, a player-versus-player version of Fortnite in which squads form to defeat other contestants online. Users were quick to adopt the Sith Lord on their missions, posting clips of their interactions with one of cinema's most famous bad guys. Many delighted in the character's apparent wit, laughing as he tells them off for poor technique, or suggesting that they are cheating. "The empire has no need for fast food," he chides one player who asks what his McDonald's order would be. "If I were forced to endure such a culinary experience, I would take a Chicken Selects Meal with large fries and a Coca-Cola drink." But actors' union SAG-AFTRA was not amused, claiming the use of AI in video games puts performers out of work. "We celebrate the right of our members and their estates to control the use of their digital replicas and welcome the use of new technologies," a statement said Monday. "However, we must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader's iconic rhythm and tone in video games." The union, which says it represents around 160,000 people, says Epic's subsidiary did not talk to its negotiators over how AI would be used in the game. SAG-AFTRA said it had filed a claim for unfair labour practices with the National Labor Relations Board, a federal agency that protects workers' rights to organise and to negotiate. Epic Games did not immediately respond to AFP's queries, but a statement released last week cited Jones's family saying they were pleased with the project. "We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character," the family said. Performers have become concerned about the use of artificial intelligence in films, TV and video games. Improving technology makes it increasingly possible to digitally recreate the audio and visual likeness of an actor. The strikes that crippled Hollywood in 2023 stemmed in part from fears that studios would seek to use digital models to replace human performers and creators.

'Fortnite' unavailable on Apple devices worldwide

Hit game "Fortnite" was unavailable on Apple's digital App Store around the world on Friday, in the latest episode of a battle between the tech titan and publisher Epic Games. While Fortnite with its millions of daily players was already unavailable to iPhone users in the United States, the block on downloads of the cartoonish multiplayer shooter now affects the entire globe. "Apple has blocked our Fortnite submission... sadly, Fortnite on iOS will be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it," Epic posted on X. Apple did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment. Epic has for years battled tech giants over the commissions they charge for software downloaded through the official stores on operating systems like Apple's iOS and Google's Android. These are historically the only way for most users to install programs onto their devices. Although it has secured wins in US courts and European Union digital regulations, Epic on Friday effectively accused Apple of slow-walking the vetting process it enforces before making an app or game available for users to download. Epic said last week that it had submitted "Fortnite" for review for listing in the App Store in the United States. As well as being "blocked" there, the publisher added that "Fortnite" was also unavailable in the European Union. Fans there can usually download the game through the company's own app store as the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which went into effect last year, requires Apple and other US tech giants to open up their platforms to competition. Epic did not immediately respond to AFP's questions about why "Fortnite" was unavailable in Europe. - 'Junk fees' - "Fortnite" is a heavyweight of the gaming world, with Epic claiming around 500 million users in 2023. But players have grown used to upsets as the publisher has filed legal cases against both Apple and Google over what it calls "junk fees". Apple's commissions for App Store purchases, which can range as high as 30 percent, come "at the expense of consumers and developers", the company wrote on X last week. Epic has faced off against Apple in US courts since 2021, when "Fortnite" was banned from the App Store over what Apple said was an attempt to get around the iPhone maker's payment system. A judge found that the App Store was anticompetitive as it forbade developers from offering alternative avenues for payment. But the conflict has endured past the US court order and the EU's requirement that Apple and Google allow third-party app stores on their operating systems. A US federal judge said earlier this month that Apple was failing to comply with her three-year-old order that emerged from Epic's case, which requires the iPhone maker to allow other avenues for users to buy content or services. Epic quickly capitalised on the new court action, submitting Fortnite afresh to be vetted for inclusion in the App Store. "We don't have an update on our Fortnite submission to the App Store. Apple has neither accepted nor rejected it," chief executive Tim Sweeney wrote on X Thursday. - Revenue stream - Apple had made a priority of building up its services business as the Silicon Valley titan tries to reduce its reliance on iPhone sales for revenue. The unit, which includes Apple's television and music streaming services along with iCloud data storage and App Store income, now accounts for more than a quarter of the company's revenue. Apple last week sought to delay a part of the court order that blocks it from charging commissions on transactions outside the App Store, Bloomberg reported. The App Store changes include letting app makers use alternate payment systems free or charge or commission. Epic had cast the order as an opening of the floodgates to allow other software developers to escape Apple's fees.
