SAU expels Bangladeshi doctoral scholar, fines mess secretary over mess row on Shivratri
Maha Shivratri
earlier this year.
The disciplinary action follows an internal inquiry by the university's Proctorial Committee.
The Feb-26 incident involved an altercation in the university mess between two student groups after fish curry was served on the Hindu festival. According to students, members affiliated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had earlier requested that only vegetarian food be provided on Maha Shivratri as many were observing a fast.
When fish curry appeared on the menu, ABVP members allegedly attempted to remove it from the serving counter, leading to a heated exchange and scuffle.
A woman member of the mess committee was allegedly manhandled during the incident.
The Students' Federation of India (SFI) accused ABVP members of trying to impose their dietary preferences on others and termed the incident as an attack on secular values. The ABVP, however, said the serving of non-vegetarian food on a day of fasting was "insensitive" and disrupted religious harmony.

Police received a PCR call about the ruckus, but on arriving at the spot found order restored, and no formal complaint was filed, leaving the university to handle the matter internally.
After weeks of deliberation, the university found doctoral scholar Sudipto Das guilty of "serious misconduct" and ordered his immediate expulsion, citing repeated instances of indiscipline. He has been permanently barred from reapplying for any SAU programme and instructed to vacate the hostel within 24 hours.
The university noted that Das had been suspended in 2022 for similar disruptive behaviour. The punishment was later reduced to a penalty of Rs 500 "with a warning that any recurrence of such an act will be viewed strictly".
Mess secretary Yashada Sawant, while not directly involved in the incident, was held responsible for failing to maintain order in the mess and fined Rs 5,000.
The official order, issued on July 15, stated that the disciplinary action was taken with the approval of the competent authority.

Jagan vows YSRCP's resurgence, slams ‘vendetta' politics
Tadepalli: YSRC Ppresident Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy launched a scathing attack on the N Chandrababu Naidu-led coalition government, accusing it of pursuing 'vindictive politics' towards its adversaries and neglecting all sections of society by failing to deliver on its electoral promises. Addressing a meeting of party's political affairs committee (PAC) here on Tuesday, he urged the party cadre to expose the government's shortcomings and strengthen the YSRCP from the grassroots, asserting that the future awaits their leadership. Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that the current coalition government is mired in corruption and is fabricating false cases against YSRCP leaders and senior officials with 'vendetta' to instill fear and divert attention from its own failures in implementing welfare schemes. He provided a detailed account of what he termed the government's vindictive actions, citing the arrests of leaders like P Midhun Reddy, Nandigama Suresh, Kakani Govardhan Reddy, and Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy. The YSRCP chief stated that the total loans taken during his 2019-24 tenure were Rs 3.32 lakh crore, while Naidu has allegedly spent 52 per cent of that amount in just 14 months. He suggested Naidu's recent trip to Singapore was merely to 'stash the looted funds.' During the meeting, PAC members expressed serious concern over alleged security lapses during Jagan's tours, terming them 'deliberate', citing an incident at Bangarupalem. Jagan announced the upcoming launch of a party app aimed at documenting government injustices, enabling citizens to report harassment by individuals or officials. 'We will hold the guilty accountable and ensure justice,' he said. 'We have lost a good government, but the people's support is with us. Together, we will restore justice, rebuild our state, and bring YSRCP back to power,' he added.

Probe agencies can't question lawyers' professional work: SC
NEW DELHI: In the process of framing guidelines to bar probe agencies from summoning lawyers for rendering opinion to clients, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said the privilege of immunity from prosecution is available to a lawyer as long as he or she acts as a legal practitioner for a client. During a proceeding initiated suo motu after the Enforcement Directorate issued summons to two senior advocates and later withdrew it, a bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran said, "We cannot ignore the fact that two senior advocates were issued summons. We are only for people acting solely as advocates and about privileged lawyer-client communications." "The privilege of immunity from prosecution statutorily conferred on lawyers for appearing, advising or giving legal opinions to clients is like the sanction provision under the IPC. Their actions are privileged if they are done in the course of their duties as a lawyer. If they themselves indulge in wrong-doing or commit an offence, then there is no protection from prosecution," the CJI said. Senior advocates Vikas Singh, Ranjit Kumar, Mukul Rohatgi, A M Singhvi, A S Nadkarni Amit Desai, Vijay Hansaria, Shoeb Alam and many others flagged the summons issued to the advocates and said tomorrow they would seek details of bank accounts of lawyers, search their premises and seek electronic devices used by advocates in the name of investigating their clients. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mini House for 60 sqm for Seniors with Toilet and Bath (Price May Surprise You) Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo "Are we not taking things too far," the CJI asked. Attorney general R Venkataramani said the govt has already acted swiftly and issued instructions to all probe agencies not to issue summons to lawyers for their profession-related work. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta said he agrees with everyone in the courtroom that lawyers must not be summoned for their professional work. Mehta said it would not be prudent for the court to lay down guidelines based on a singular infraction and cautioned that it could prove counterproductive. "The agencies also cannot ignore a lawyer, who is a director of a company under investigation for fraudulent transactions, giving an opinion for commission of an illegality. Merely because he is a lawyer, he would not be immune from prosecution for the acts he did as director of the company," the SG said. Giving another example, he also said a fugitive, who fled the country, told the agency that the documents demanded from him are available with a law firm and that the officers could take it from the law firm. "Should the agency not go to the law firm to collect the documents? Will that impinge upon the lawyer's privilege?" SC asked and told the AG and the SG to give their response to the suggestions given by SCBA, SCAORA and other lawyers by Aug 12.

Torn between grief & bills, says mother of 5-yr-old killed in BMW hit-&-run
Noida: Tanzeela Khatoon's life has been upended by grief as she tends to her critically injured husband while mourning the loss of her five-year-old daughter and 20-year-old brother in a hit-and-run crash involving a BMW on Sunday. "I am praying for my husband's recovery," she said. "But one sad news after another has shaken my faith. I haven't even had the time to grieve properly for my daughter, and now my brother is gone too." With her husband, Gul Mohammad, admitted at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, Tanzeela says she has just been running between the hospital and home. "Ayaat kept crying the whole evening. So, when my husband came home around 9pm, he decided to take her to the hospital. Who knew she'd never return? Her siblings keep asking about her, and I don't know what to say," Tanzeela added. Ayaat, who had started attending a local Anganwadi school a few months ago, died on the spot after the BMW, allegedly driven by a 20-year-old man under the influence of alcohol, crashed into Gul's scooter near Child PGI in Sector 30 around 12.20am on Sunday as they were returning home from the hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Gul and Raza, who had also accompanied them to the hospital, were critically injured as the scooter was dragged for nearly 100 metres due to the impact of the collision. In the FIR, police said Gul had approached a U-turn near the hospital from the wrong side on his scooter when the BMW rammed it. Yash Sharma (20) of Sector 37, who was behind the wheel, and Abhishek Rawat (22) of Sector 70, who was accompanying him in the car, were arrested on Sunday within hours of the crash. On Monday, the two men got out on bail. "They killed two people and walked free in 24 hours. How is that justice?" Tanzeela's younger brother, Masoom, asked. "If this is the value of a poor person's life, what are we supposed to believe? These rich people can buy their way out while we lose everything." Masoom also flagged delays in Raza's treatment at the hospital. "When Raza and my brother-in-law were taken to the hospital, they didn't get immediate medical help. We were told to first deposit money. How could we arrange Rs 1-2 lakh in the middle of the night? Every moment mattered." Raza, who suffered fractures to his head, leg, and hands, had slipped into a coma during treatment and died on Sunday night. While Gul's condition is said to be stable, he has yet to regain full consciousness. "Doctors say he may have ruptured his eardrum and needs to undergo surgery," Tanzeela said. With Gul bedridden, she fears for the future of her family. "He is the sole breadwinner. We have three children to feed. I don't know how we'll survive," she said. Ten years ago, when the couple had come to Noida, Gul had taken up odd jobs before starting to work as a plumber at under-construction housing projects. As the couple found their footing, Tanzeela's brothers, Raza and Masoom, came to live with them at their small one-room set-up at Sadarpur's Khajoor colony. After the couple's youngest son was born six months ago, the family had started to plan Raza's wedding. "Raza had started working as a tailor some months ago. He was like a child to me. We had started looking for a suitable match. There was excitement in the family. But it feels like fate has wiped it all away," Tanzeela said.
