Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Simon Wiles as their new Under-18s head coach, bringing an end to the vacancy left by Marc Bridge-Wilkinson. It is another clear sign of the club's reshaping under Arne Slot, with Academy director Alex Inglethorpe continuing to refine the development pathway at Kirkby.
Simon Wiles Moves Across Rival Lines
Wiles joins Liverpool having spent less than a year at Manchester United, where he was part of a wider academy restructuring led by INEOS. Brought in alongside Tom Curtis to focus on player development across the U13s to U16s, Wiles operated primarily with United's U14s squad while overseeing progress across other key age groups. His time at United was brief, but his arrival was heralded internally as part of an effort to bring 'best-in-class youth developers' to Carrington.
Despite the limited time in Manchester, the opportunity at Liverpool clearly offers more responsibility. As head coach of the U18s, Wiles now takes on a position seen as pivotal to Liverpool's long-term strategy. The role carries extra significance, with recent graduates like Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley and Tyler Morton having come through the same pathway and gone on to feature in senior squads.
Experience Across the North-West
Before his stint at United, Wiles accumulated a varied coaching background that includes spells at Fleetwood Town, Blackpool and Salford City. He held roles ranging from youth development to first-team support, gaining valuable insight into both academy structures and senior football environments.
Alex Inglethorpe was quick to underline the breadth of Wiles' experience, telling Liverpoolfc.com:
'Simon is a highly regarded young coach and I'm delighted he's agreed to take a key role within the Academy as lead for the U18s group.
It is a crucial phase in development for young players towards a professional career and I believe Simon's experience made him an outstanding candidate for the role.'
He added:
'He has worked across the age groups at Fleetwood and Blackpool, with plenty of experience of senior football at Salford as well – most recently working in a Category One academy at Manchester United.
That skillset is ideal for us as we look to allow our players to reach their full potential and hopefully transition towards the upper levels of the game.'
Working in Tandem with Rob Page
Wiles will work closely with new U21s boss Rob Page, who himself joined earlier this summer after Barry Lewtas stepped down following 12 years at the club. Anthony Ryan remains assistant coach for the U18s after moving from the U15s.
Bridge-Wilkinson's decade-long contribution included leading the side to an FA Youth Cup final in 2021 and mentoring talents now knocking on the door of Liverpool's first team. Wiles inherits both the expectations and opportunities that come with such a post, at a time when the club is once again reshaping its identity, from senior leadership to academy infrastructure.
Inglethorpe concluded:
'All of us at the Academy are excited about working with Simon and look forward to helping him develop players capable of bridging the gap to elite first-team football.'
As Liverpool build on the success of Arne Slot's first season in charge, and in the wake of major structural changes, Wiles' appointment signals an ongoing commitment to continuity and progression in youth development, even if it involves taking talent from across enemy lines.

The Architecture of Football: RIBA & Tate Liverpool Unveil Fall 2025 Exhibition

In partnership with theTate Liverpool, theRoyal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)presents a Fall 2025 exhibition centered on a quintessentially English sporting culture. 'Home Ground: The Architecture of Football' at Gallery One of Tate Liverpool traces the historical development of football stadium design, dating from the 1890s to the present day. Featuring more than 50 global football stadiums, the Fall 2025 exhibit will dive into the stories and plans for some of the world's most important football venues. As the city prepares for the eventual opening of the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool in 2027, a wealth of architectural models, photographs, and other archival materials will grant visitors insight into the architectural considerations that form the stadium experience and the accompanying social culture of football fandom. 'Football has a unique ability to stir emotions, cross borders and captivate the world,' shared RIBA President, Muyiwa Oki in a statement. 'At their best, stadiums are as iconic as the players themselves, etched into the hearts of fans long after the final whistle. For architects, they offer a rare opportunity to help shape the beautiful game.' From Everton to Chelsea, the exhibit will start at the foundations of modern stadiums led by early designers like Archibald Leitch, one of the foremost club architects in the early 20th century. RIBA then offers a snapshot of modern stadiums designed by firms like BDP, Populous, Herzog & de Meuron, gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. 'From the red and blue cauldron of Barcelona's Nou Camp to the iconic arch of Wembley rising in the backdrop of London, great design can amplify atmosphere, heighten drama and leave a lasting mark on a city's skylines,' Oki added. The Home Ground exhibition will be open from October 15, 2025, to January 6, 2026. Information and tickets will be available atthe official Tate website. Liverpool leave massive clue star player is LEAVING

Liverpool have just left a massive clue that their star player is leaving the club. Adidas have finally returned to be the Reds' kit manufacturer after more than ten years away. Notably, you will have seen a lot of the club's players missing from the kit launch. Out of the big stars the likes of Andy Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Ibrahima Konate did not feature in the launch. Alisson Becker was also featured very sparsely in order to promote the goalkeeper kit. This is not a surprise. With the exception of Gakpo who is sponsored by Puma, the rest of the players are Nike athletes and therefore they will not have been able to participate in the kit launch. Virgil van Dijk who is also a Nike athlete, was a rare exception, he must have been given permission to appear in the advert given his status as a club captain. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range from 9am TODAY There's a strong rivalry between the two brands, which is why for example when Nike were doing kit launches someone like Mohamed Salah, who is a prominent adidas athlete did not feature in the promotional advertisements. But while the notable Nike and Puma absentees are to be expected there was a notable adidas exemptions in the promotional material. Darwin Nunez is an adidas athlete after switching over from Nike last season. In pre-season, he has been spotted wearing the latest adidas F50s, which suggests that he still remains an adidas athlete. Yet, he was nowhere to be seen in the promotional material for the new shirt, which is a surprise given the fact that he is a prominent and star player for the Reds.

Man Utd striker Hojlund available for £30m

Manchester United are prepared to sell striker Rasmus Hojlund for £30m. The Denmark striker scored twice against Bournemouth in Chicago on Wednesday. Immediately after the game he sought out waiting journalists to say his intention was to remain at United despite their ongoing interest in signing RB Leipzig's Slovenia forward Benjamin Sesko. However, the situation is not quite so straightforward. Newcastle are also keen on Sesko but are yet to strike a deal with RB Leipzig for the 22-year-old. United are waiting to decide their next move and there have been reports that the player would prefer to switch to Old Trafford. United sources are adamant they could do a deal before selling players. But it is accepted that there would have to be exits to ensure they remain compliant with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. And, if Sesko arrived, Hojlund would be marginalised. If Hojlund was sold for £30m, it would effectively be a loss for United given the forward's 'book value' is £43m as he is two years into the five-year contract he signed. United have spent almost £130m this summer on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Latest Manchester United news, analysis and fan views Get Man Utd news notifications
