Police officer arrested for allegedly extorting R5 000 from suspect

A POLICE constable stationed at Leeu Gamka is expected to appear in court after he allegedly forced a suspect to pay him R5,000 to secure his release.
The officer, after allegedly receiving part payment of R3,000, failed to release the suspect, and the matter was reported.
Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, said the 31-year-old constable was arrested on June 25.
'The initial reports at our disposal suggest that on May 9, the constable stationed at Leeu Gamka SAPS requested a suspect in custody for fraud to make a payment of R5,000 to secure his release. The suspect agreed to pay the constable an amount of R3,000 and arranged to pay the balance upon his release.
'The constable in question used his mobile device to ensure the suspect made a payment into his bank account. The suspect, however, was never released from custody. The conduct of the police member was reported and ultimately transferred to the Western Cape Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation,' said Swartbooi.

After the cop's arrest on corruption charges, provincial police commissioner Thembisile Patekile, issued a stern warning against corruption within the ranks of police officers.
Patekile emphasised the SAPS' zero-tolerance approach to corrupt officials.

Three bodies found in the Western Cape The discovery comes just a few hours after Western Cape police found the bodies of three men, aged between 26 and 35, in another apparent vigilante-style attack in the Samora Machel informal settlement. Police discovered the bodies in different locations in close proximity to each other at around 8am on Wednesday. 'Preliminary information indicates that the victims were allegedly accused by community members of being armed robbers and were subsequently targeted and killed in what appears to be a vigilante-style attack,' said police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut. 'Although post-mortem examinations will confirm the exact cause of death, it is suspected that the victims were fatally assaulted.' Major General Dumisani Khumalo was arrested over luxury property purchases worth R45 million without ministerial approval. The National Prosecuting Authority's Investigating Directorate (ID) has arrested Crime Intelligence boss, Major General Dumisani Khumalo, in connection with a corruption investigation involving R45 million in property deals. Khumalo, who heads Crime Intelligence within the South African Police Service (Saps), was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday following an 'extensive' probe into the alleged unlawful purchase of two luxury properties. A boutique hotel in Pretoria North, worth R22.7 million, and a commercial building in Berea, Durban, valued at R22.8 million, were allegedly purchased without proper ministerial approval. Co-accused Saps CFO reportedly missing 'Khumalo is believed to have played a key role in authorising the deals alongside Saps Crime Intelligence Chief Financial Officer Major General Philani Lushaba, who has reportedly gone missing amid the investigation,' said the Investigating Directorate in a statement on Thursday afternoon. Image: Supplied A 43-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday, after a clandestine cannabis laboratory was dismantled during a high-impact operation near Morningside, Durban. The suspect was arrested on Thursday during a joint operation between members of the Hawks' Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Durban Metro Police Drug Team, the Metro K9 Unit, Durban Flying Squad, and the eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team. Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo says police acted on intelligence that pointed to an indoor cannabis cultivation setup in the area. 'A disruptive operation was swiftly conducted, and they proceeded to the said building,' he confirmed. 'During the search, police found indoor cannabis plants, ecstasy tablets, crack cocaine, chemicals and equipment to the street value of approximately R350 000.00,' Mhlongo added.
