2025 National Spelling Bee: Columbus eighth grader narrowly misses final

Yahoo29-05-2025
WASHINGTON D.C. (WCMH) — An eighth grader from Columbus just missed out on making the finals of the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee in D.C.
Columbus-native Avinav Prem Anand, 14, is sponsored by the Blue Jackets and was able to get all the way to the ninth round but misspelled the word 'Morillon' to be eliminated. This was Anand's fourth consecutive spelling bee and his best ever finish with being tied 20th overall.
The Orange Middle School student swiftly advanced to the semifinals after a long day of spelling and vocabulary questions in the quarterfinals.

Anand spelled 'Thrombus', 'Nappe', and 'Watteau' correctly while also defining 'prolific' and 'timbre' correctly to get to the ninth round of 35 spellers. When asked to spell 'Morillon', he spelled it 'Merillin'.
10-year-old Joseph Keffer, a fifth grader from Athens at Chesapeake Middle School, was able to advance past the preliminaries but missed out on the quarterfinals after being eliminated from the third round test. Keffer officially finished tied 100th.
The National Spelling Bee finals take place Thursday night at 8 p.m. An Ohioan has not won the competition since 2010 and a central Ohio competitor has never won.

Analyzing Penn State-Ohio State

The results of the US LBM coaches poll were very telling. While the uncertainty of the No. 1 overall spot took top billing, we now also know what coaches think about the Big Ten and most importantly, its top two teams. Ohio State, the defending national champs, sit at No. 2 with the Penn State Nittany Lions sitting right behind them at the 3 spot. Both could have made the cases for the coveted top spot, but in many ways, these rankings lend intrigue to perhaps one of the biggest games of the season: their Week 8 matchup in Columbus where both teams could be 1 and 2 respectively should Texas falter. Needless to say, the popcorn will almost definitely be out. Penn State fans know the score when it comes to the Buckeyes. The only win they have had over them in the past decade was also the last time they won a Big Ten title, back in 2016. Nevertheless, last year at home was their best chance at redemption. But much like years past, poor execution and lack of consistency saw them come up short yet again. Who knows what would have happened if they had won their CFP semifinal and faced off against the Buckeyes in the national title? Penn State fans would probably blanch at that thought. On the other hand, with the start of the 2025 season comes a new narrative for the Nittany Lions. They enter the season with one of the most accomplished rosters in the sport and potentially as the Big Ten favorite. They may have not handled the psychological burdens of last year, but this squad has a different vibe of comfortability to it. They have the natural swagger, yet composure now to navigate another long, grueling season and their playoff experience will help them in the long run. Meanwhile, Ohio State will have a new face at the helm of their offense in Julian Sayin, with a lot of rumors saying he has struggled in spring practices. However, he does have the benefit of the best receiving tandem in the country and a defense filled with experience and young talent who are hungry to step up. All Sayin needs to do is just keep the offense rolling without making too many critical mistakes. He will be heavily tested right from the jump at home against Texas, but this matchup is really the one that matters. What's interesting for both teams though is that theoretically, this game might not matter at all. The new Big Ten format gives both squads less margin for error as they do not have to win a division for a shot at the Big Ten title. Still, for both programs, there is a lot at stake. For Penn State, it's the psychological hurdle that they must leap over. It's all fine and dandy when you can purportedly say you're the better team on paper, but if it doesn't show up on game day, there will be a lot more soul searching than just chalking it up to bad luck. For Ohio State, it's more about the marquee win on their resume. If they don't beat Texas at home the first game of the season, this matchup is the one that will sway the committee in their favor on Judgment Day. It also most certainly could prove that the Buckeyes are still the top dogs in the conference and every one will have to go through them if they want a title. Divisions be damned, both squads will play like they mean it. College football fans will want it no other way. This article originally appeared on Nittany Lions Wire: Analyzing Penn State-Ohio State

'Bombshell' Ohio State Cheerleader Trending Before Season Opener originally appeared on The Spun. A "bombshell" Ohio State Buckeyes cheerleader is trending on social media ahead of the 2025 season. Ohio State could open the year as the No. 1 team in the country. The Buckeyes, who went 14-2 last season, en route to a national championship, lost a lot from their title-winning team. But they bring back plenty of stars, too, including All-American wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and defensive back Caleb Downs. Ohio State should be loaded once again. The Buckeyes will open the year with a big game, hosting Texas at The Horseshoe. It could be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in Columbus. ESPN's "College GameDay" will be in town, as will FOX's "Big Noon Kickoff." Ahead of the season opener, a "bombshell" Ohio State Buckeyes cheerleader is trending on social media. She's very excited for the start of the regular season. Avery Thielman, a veteran Ohio State Buckeyes cheerleader, is trending on social media before the Week 1 season opener against the Texas Longhorns. "Found this in my drafts and got excited for weekends to look like this again #onemonthaway," she wrote on Instagram. While Avery is ready for the 2025 college football season, she's been spending some time out west, too. She recently enjoyed a trip out to Los Angeles. "OH -> LA," she wrote. Ohio State and Texas, meanwhile, are scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m. E.T. on Saturday, Aug. 30. The game will air live on FOX. The 2025 college football regular season is right around the corner. Games are set to begin later in August. The first big-time matchup is set for Saturday, Aug. 30, when Ohio State takes on Texas in a potential No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown at The Horseshoe in Columbus. One NBC analyst has labeled three uniforms 10/10 heading into the 2025 season. An NBC analyst has labeled three Big Ten football uniforms "perfect" heading into the 2025 season. There's one big surprise. Minnesota Yes, the Golden Gophers - not what you would think of when you think of iconic Big Ten uniforms - were given a perfect 10/10 rating by the NBC football analyst. "Maroon and gold, underrated combination," he said. Former Ohio State football star Joshua Perry didn't really agree, though. He called it "aggressive" and we'd have to agree. Oregon The Ducks are synonymous with great college football uniforms, so it's no surprise that their throwback green and yellow uniform gets a 10/10 rating from the NBC analyst. Still, not everyone loves them, as they can be a bit much in the eyes of some fans. "No matter what combination, this is a 10/10," he said of Oregon's uniforms. USC Most would probably think that Ohio State or Michigan would get the final 10/10 spot here, given their history, but instead, it goes to the Trojans. It's an iconic college football uniform, to be sure. The colors pop on TV, especially when they are playing their rival, UCLA.
