2025 National Spelling Bee: Columbus eighth grader narrowly misses final
WASHINGTON D.C. (WCMH) — An eighth grader from Columbus just missed out on making the finals of the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee in D.C. Columbus-native Avinav Prem Anand, 14, is sponsored by the Blue Jackets and was able to get all the way to the ninth round but misspelled the word 'Morillon' to be eliminated. This was Anand's fourth consecutive spelling bee and his best ever finish with being tied 20th overall. The Orange Middle School student swiftly advanced to the semifinals after a long day of spelling and vocabulary questions in the quarterfinals. 2025 Memorial Tournament: Five golfers to watch for 50th edition Anand spelled 'Thrombus', 'Nappe', and 'Watteau' correctly while also defining 'prolific' and 'timbre' correctly to get to the ninth round of 35 spellers. When asked to spell 'Morillon', he spelled it 'Merillin'. 10-year-old Joseph Keffer, a fifth grader from Athens at Chesapeake Middle School, was able to advance past the preliminaries but missed out on the quarterfinals after being eliminated from the third round test. Keffer officially finished tied 100th. The National Spelling Bee finals take place Thursday night at 8 p.m. An Ohioan has not won the competition since 2010 and a central Ohio competitor has never won. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 2025 Spelling Bee: How two central Ohio kids did in preliminaries
WASHINGTON D.C. (WCMH) — The 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee is underway from our nation's capital and two central Ohioans are competing against over 200 others from across the country. Fifteen kids from Ohio are among the 243 spellers in the 2025 competition with the preliminary round taking place on Tuesday. Among those Ohioans is Columbus-native Avinav Prem Anand, 14, who is sponsored by the Blue Jackets and is competing in his fourth consecutive spelling bee. The eighth grader from Orange Middle School had his best finish last year when he came in 22nd place. He is also moving on to Wednesday's quarterfinals after spelling 'Sapporo' right and correctly defining expostulate as his vocabulary question. Ohio bill would make Superman the state's official superhero, but not until 2033 Making his spelling bee debut is 10-year-old Joseph Keffer, a fifth grader from Athens at Chesapeake Middle School. He is being sponsored by Ohio University's journalism school and is one of the three youngest competitors from the Buckeye State. Keffer spelled the word 'furan' correctly and got his multiple-choice vocabulary question correct, sending him to the quarterfinals. Anand and Keffer are two of 183 spellers to advance to the quarterfinals, which begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday. If Anand and Keffer can stay perfect in spelling, they will compete in Wednesday night's semifinals and hope to appear in Thursday evening's finals. In the 100-year history of the Spelling Bee, nine Ohioans have won with all hailing from either Akron, Cleveland, or Canton. Central Ohio eighth grader is a top contender in the National Spelling Bee
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — It's a big week for a central Ohio eighth grader, who is competing in his fourth National Spelling Bee. Avinav Prem Anand will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this week, his fourth consecutive go. Anand attends Orange Middle School and won the Columbus Blue Jackets Regional Spelling Bee at Nationwide Arena in March. Anand will be one of 243 spellers across the country and is considered a top contender this year. He tied for 32nd place in 2022, tied for 74th in 2023 and tied for 22nd place in last year's event. Program gives Ohioans a second chance and keeps roads clean Anand said when he's not acting as a spelling whiz, his hobbies include martial arts, cycling and baking. At 14, he will be among the oldest spellers and this will mark his final year of eligibility. He said his favorite animal is the cardinal, Ohio's state bird. Anand is one of 15 competitors from Ohio, including a 10-year-old speller from Athens County. Competitors can be as young as 8, but there is only one speller in the youngest age group this year, a second grader from Texas. There is also only one 9-year-old competing, Ohioan Aadhya Adhikari from Marietta. Preliminaries begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, with the quarterfinals and semifinals taking place Wednesday and spellers battling in the finals Thursday evening.
