Marcus Rashford makes final transfer decision as private Barcelona talks emerge

Daily Mirror08-05-2025
Manchester United want to sell Marcus Rashford this summer in order to raise transfer funds and the Aston Villa loanee has his heart set on a dream move to Barcelona
Marcus Rashford is said to have partnered with super-agent Pini Zahavi as well as indicating a willingness to lower his salary demands in order to help facilitate a move to Barcelona.
The England star, 27, is expected to leave Manchester United permanently this summer and the Nou Camp is his dream destination. Crucially, Rashford has managed to boost his stock during the second half of the season after joining Aston Villa on loan but interest in his services from Barca is longstanding.

While Rashford ending up staying in the Premier League, there have been numerous reports outlining his desire to join the Spanish giants should he leave Old Trafford for good.

And a new report from Mundo Deportivo has claimed that Rashford is now being represented by Zahavi; an agent with close ties to Barcelona who also represents their manager, Hansi Flick, and Robert Lewandowski.
It's claimed that the main reason for the move on Rashford's end is due to the fact that Zahavi has strong links to Barca, who do have a void to fill in the left-hand side of their front three with Ansu Fati failing to make an impression on Flick.
Zahavi is believed to have a strong relationship with the club's president, Joan Laporta, and it's claimed that talks over a loan move this summer have already taken place.
The news will come as a blow to Aston Villa, who negotiated a £40million option to purchase Rashford permanently as part of the deal that saw him move to Villa Park in the winter transfer window.
He has four goals and six assists to his name in a Villa shirt but is expected to miss the remainder of the season through injury.

United's preference would be to sell their homegrown star, who was dropped by Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach is aiming to reshape his playing squad this summer and any transfer fees that can be raised from offloading unwanted stars - such as Rashford and Antony, who has also enjoyed a renaissance away from Old Trafford - would be welcomed by the club.
It remains to be seen if Barcelona would be able to meet Manchester United's demands to finance a permanent deal given their cash woes in recent years, while the former may be reluctant to sanction another temporary move for Rashford.

Napoli eyeing loan move for Manchester United flop after injury to key player

Antonio Conte wants another striker with the Serie A season about to start (Picture: Getty Images) Napoli are looking at options up front after an injury scare for Romelu Lukaku, with a Manchester United flop on their radar. The Belgian forward suffered a thigh injury during the pre-season friendly with Olympiacos last Thursday, replaced by Lorenzo Lucca just past the half hour mark. The extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, but the Serie A champions are worried that the 32-year-old is going to be out for a number of weeks. Antonio Conte wants to bring in a new forward given the situation, with the club identifying a few possible targets. Among them is a loan move for Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee, who has made little impact with the Red Devils since his move from Bologna last year. Your ultimate guide to the football season Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The 24-year-old made 49 appearances in all competitions in his first season with the club, scoring four goals. He scored on his Premier League debut at the start of the last campaign, but managed just three goals in 32 outings in the top flight. Joshua Zirkzee is not going to get many starts at Man Utd this season Getty Images) With the arrival of Benjamin Sesko at Manchester United, the Dutchman has fallen down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim. He was on the bench as the Red Devils hosted Arsenal on Sunday and did not make it onto the pitch despite Amorim's side chasing a result, eventually losing the match 1-0. Italian publication Corriere dello Sport report that Napoli hold an interest in Zirkzee, thanks to his performances in Italy, where he scored 11 Serie A goals in his last season with Bologna before leaving for England. Romelu Lukaku suffered the frustrating injury in a friendly last week (Picture:Getty Images) This interest in the Netherlands international is not out of the blue, with Napoli linked with a move for him in the January transfer window as well. They are also looking at other options, with Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta also on their radar. The Eagles will be loathed to lose the Frenchman, with other star names Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi also linked with an exit before the transfer window closes. Crystal Palace do not want to sell Jean-Philippe Mateta (Picture: Getty Images) Other forwards reportedly on Napoli's shopping list are Roma's Ukraine international Artem Dovbyk and Lecce's Montenegrin striker Nikola Krstovic. More Trending An update on Lukaku's injury is expected imminently, which will influence how desperate Napoli are to make a move as their Serie A season starts on Saturday August 23 at Sassuolo. The injury in a friendly will be of great frustration to Conte after the manager talked up Lukaku ahead of the game last week. 'He can do even more, because he's a key player in winning the Scudetto, because we bought him for €30 million and the cost/return ratio was top-notch,' Conte said of Lukaku's 14 league goals last season. 'Training after so many years of not doing so can bring him a lot of benefits. He's in the midst of his development, he's one of the team's key players.' Martin Odegaard immediately hits back at Arsenal icon after narrow Man Utd win

Martin Odegaard took no time at all to make his statement of intent after the Arsenal captain's credentials were questioned, letting his actions for the talking against Manchester United Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard gave the perfect response to Tony Adams' recent calls for him to be replaced as club captain. That's after the Norwegian enjoyed a performance fitting of the lead man in Arsenal's hard-fought 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday. ‌ The Gunners travelled to Old Trafford not long after club legend Adams suggested Arsenal are "not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain." The retired defender, who won four league titles with Arsenal and captained the team for 14 years, suggested the midfielder isn't the man to end the club's Premier League drought after three straight runner-up finishes. ‌ Speaking at a recent live recording of the Indo Sport podcast, Adams said: "I'm seeing Declan Rice as a captain, but I'm saying to Arteta, 'Come on, step up now. It's your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you're not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain.'" ‌ Odegaard has since responded to those comments and given some insight as to how he looks to inspire his squad. However, he saved the most apt reply for Sunday's trip to Old Trafford, where he delivered a leader's display under massive pressure. The 26-year-old played a crucial role in getting Arsenal out of several scrapes and firing his side upfield in numerous quick transitions. He also made five clearances - only William Saliba (seven) made more among Arsenal players - and did a good job of calming matters when United looked like unnerving their guests. Manager Mikel Arteta has also come to his captain's defence after retaining Odegaard as skipper. He recently revealed the matter was decided by a club-wide vote, and there was a heavy consensus the former Real Madrid man was their pick to lead. "My opinion is clear, and it's not just my opinion - it's all the staff and especially the players," Arteta told reporters ahead of Arsenal's Premier League opener. "I asked them to vote [for] the captain, and I got the result yesterday. "By a mile away, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody was choosing the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. It's how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win, so there's no question about that. ‌ "There is [a vote] every year especially because we change [personnel] a lot, and we change the leadership groups, because a lot of the players that were there are now gone. So we need to re-establish that and because it gives you so much information, how they feel about themselves and how they see [the captain] as a leader. It was really interesting to analyse all the data and to gather information." Sunday's Premier League curtain-raiser is of course just the first step to Odegaard truly proving he's the man to take Arsenal to silverware. But victory away to one of the club's greatest nemeses on the opening weekend of the new season is no bad way to start. ‌ Speaking to Sky Sports prior to visiting Old Trafford, Odegaard was asked about Adams' criticism and delivered a typically mature response: "It's a lot to be fair. It's a lot of small things. It's hard to describe it, it's more like a constant role you do. "There's always these small things you have to do. In general it's just how I see it is to get the best out of the team and how to give the team the right mindset. Help the players around you, get the best mindset in everyone. "I think before the game just on the pitch I do a little one (team talk) and inside the dressing room we have different people talking. It's not just me there's a lot of people sharing the responsibility and the manager does a lot as well. It's a shared thing. It's not just me all the time." Wayne Rooney makes Man Utd's Gianluigi Donnarumma feelings clear - 'Crazy'

Wayne Rooney is adamant that Manchester United should be in for Gianluigi Donnarumma with the goalkeeper's time at PSG looking to be up amid talk of a new No 1 arriving at the club Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United"would be crazy" not to make a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma as Ruben Amorim is urged to go into the transfer market for a new No 1. ‌ Altay Bayindir started for the Red Devils in their Premier League opener and it was his error that led to the winning goal for Arsenal in the first-half. He stepped in for regular No 1 Andre Onana, who too has not convinced during his two years at Old Trafford. ‌ There has been talk of United going after a new shotstopper this summer and Donnarumma is a man on the market after falling out of favour at PSG. The Italian has just claimed the Champions League with the French side but is now looking to quit the club. ‌ United, as well as neighbours Manchester City, are both looking to make moves and Rooney insists it would be a massive missed opportunity if those at Old Trafford didn't try and land Donnarumma. He said on his podcast: "Donnarumma, I think he's 26, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him." Rooney also believes the Euro 2020 winner would be a guarantee, even if he brings with him hefty wage demands. "I don't think he's a risk. I saw a stat the other day - the errors leading direct to goals. His was zero," said the ex-United star. Ruben Amorim currently has Bayindir, Onana and Tom Heaton on his books. The latter is a veteran whilst question marks hang over the other two. Rooney admitted the Cameroon goalkeeper "certainly didn't fill us with confidence last season" after making numerous errors. The United boss though has rejected suggestions he needs to go into the market for a new goalkeeper. Gary Neville is among those adamant that they need a new No 1 but Amorim believes Sunday's clash with Arsenal proves they can win Premier League games with their current crop of shotstoppers. He said he was "happy with the three goalkeepers" before adding: "I think we prove today that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal and we were the better team. So I'm happy with the players." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
