At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, the Japanese port city of Hiroshima was struck by the world's first atomic bomb that had been built in the U.S. by the top-secret Manhattan Project. Dropped by a B-29 Superfortress, a long-range bomber, the weapon destroyed large parts of the city, and killed tens of thousands. The Hiroshima Men traces the path to the attack and its aftermath through the experiences of several key characters, including General Leslie Groves, leader of the Manhattan Project alongside Robert Oppenheimer; pioneering Army Air Force bomber pilot Colonel Paul Tibbets II; the mayor of Hiroshima, Senkichi Awaya, who died in the attack; and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist John Hersey, who exposed the devastation the bomb inflicted on a city and its people. General Curtis LeMay had now been with the 509th for a few days, having landed on Tinian on August 3. There was a reason the commander was making a personal, somewhat unusual visit to the island airstrip. He was carrying sealed orders for Colonel Paul Tibbets: 'Special Bombing Mission No. 13.' Within it, and what he would discuss with the strike leader, was the authorised date for the attack on Japan with the weapon. The date agreed was August 6, and LeMay discussed with Tibbets the targets that had been assigned:
Primary—Hiroshima urban industrial area
Secondary—Kokura arsenal and city
Tertiary—Nagasaki urban area.
The order confirmed that no friendly aircraft, 'other than those listed herein, will be within a fifty-mile area of any of the targets for this strike during the period of four hours prior to and six subsequent to strike time.'

Inspecting 'Little Boy'
Thirty-two copies were distributed to commands in Guam, Iwo Jima, and Tinian. Tibbets locked his copy in the office safe and then departed with LeMay to inspect Little Boy, nestling on its cradle in the Tech Area. The most important commanders on the base were barred from entry by one vigilant MP (Military Police) who demanded LeMay first hand over his cigars and matches. Earlier that morning, the senior military men and scientists on Tinian had agreed that Tibbets's weaponeer for the mission, Captain William S. 'Deak' Parsons, would arm the device in flight. Parsons had made a convincing case that to have the bomb armed before actual take-off risked destroying the whole island should the Enola Gay suffer a malfunction and crash—as so many other B-29s had over the past months. The fear of catastrophic engine failure haunted all of them. Parsons would crawl to the bomb bay early in the flight to insert one of the uranium plugs and the explosive charge into the bomb to fully arm it.

In the baking midday heat, Tibbets had decided to go and judge the finished livery he had instructed the crews to paint on the newly christened Enola Gay. He admired his mother's name in a bold black font beneath the pilot's side of the cockpit. The imposing bomber, along with the other six that would accompany him on the mission, had their distinctive 509th arrow inside a circle insignia removed and replaced with a simple large black R. Tibbets worried that any deviation might lead an inquisitive Japanese interceptor to attack them. He now oversaw the plane being towed to the loading pit. He studied the weapon as it was slowly and carefully hoisted into the bomb bay of the Enola Gay by the technical staff. Wiping the sweat from his forehead with his handkerchief, Tibbets could make out a variety of scrawled messages; one declared, To Emperor Hirohito, from the Boys of the Indianapolis. He recognised the tribute to the old battleship that had delivered parts of the bomb to Tinian. He took in the familiar dimensions of the plumb-shaped, gunmetal-gray ordnance: nine hundred pounds, twelve feet long, a diameter of twenty-eight inches, and sharp tailfins protruding. Tibbets later recalled in his memoir:
'Looking at the huge bomb with its blunt nose and four tail fins, I wondered why we were calling it 'Little Boy.' It was not little by any standard. It was a monster compared with any bomb that I had ever dropped.'
In a poker game
Later that evening, Tibbets called the crews together for a briefing. Theodore Van Kirk recalled: 'We knew this was going to be a very important thing because they had guys with Tommy Guns out situated around the briefing hut. Who's going to go on the mission, what the course is going to be, what the bomb heading is going to be and all that kind of stuff. Then they tell us to go and get some sleep and they'll call us at 10 p.m. for the final briefing, the final breakfast and then we'll go down to the airplane. How are they supposed to tell you you're going out to drop the first atomic bomb and then go and get some sleep is absolutely beyond me. I know Tibbets didn't sleep, and I know Ferebee didn't sleep, and I know I didn't sleep, because we were [all] still in the same poker game, and I don't even remember who won!'
The crews had been informed that there would be two deviations from the procedures they had practised. Tibbets had decided to change the Enola Gay's call sign from 'Victor' to 'Dimples.' Just as he feared an air attack from enemy interceptors, so he fretted that they might also pick up his call sign via radio traffic. Secondly, now that Parsons had won his argument to arm the bomb in flight, Tibbets announced they would remain at an altitude of five thousand feet for the first leg of the flight. Parsons needed as much stability in flight as possible to do the job safely. He assured the crews precautions had been taken with the U.S. Navy for a thorough safety net of vessels and submarines situated at points along the route below, to retrieve them should the Enola Gay or any other plane on the mission ditch in the sea.
At 11 p.m., the three crews were brought together one final time for Tibbets to address them: 'Tonight is the night we have all been waiting for. Our long months of training are to be put to the test. We will soon know if we have been successful or failed. Upon our efforts tonight it is possible that history will be made. We are going on a mission to drop a bomb different from any you have ever seen or heard about. This bomb contains a destructive force equivalent to twenty thousand tons of TNT.'

Gyodong Island (South Korea), Aug 7 (PTI) Kim Cheong San and his wife Min Ok Sun, both in their 90s, never thought their temporary tin-roof shelter built over 70 years ago in Gyodong Island in South Korea would become their permanent home after being displaced in the Korean War. Gyodong-do (do means island in Korean) is situated along the border between North and South Korea. Like the nonagenarian couple Kim and Min, it has scores of displaced North Koreans who were engaged in the Korean War in the 1950s. A bridge connecting Gyodong-do to Ganghwa-do, where the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) Peace Trail is located, was built in 2014, allowing tourists to visit the area. Tourists have been visiting the area to see Daeryong village and the Daeryong Market, which has a nostalgic charm reminiscent of the 1970s. Kim, born in 1930 in Hwanghae-do (now in North Korea), was a member of the UN8240 Eulji Tiger Brigade Association, a guerrilla unit. This unit helped US Army soldiers in rescue operations for US Air Force pilots across the northern side, their familiar territory, after the Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950. Min, born in the same village as her husband, came to Gyodong-do when she was only 17. But the country was divided after the war and they never had a chance to go back. Many North Koreans, including this couple, settled temporarily in Gyodong Island when the war ended on July 27, 1953. 'The villagers here helped us refugees to settle in by building tin-roof shelters. Now, over the years, our temporary abodes have turned into forever homes," Kim says. 'I never thought I would marry and live my whole life here. I was just longing for peace and wanted to return to my hometown to my parents and get married there, in front of them," Min said. The couple has three sons – all well settled in different cities of South Korea. The couple's sons and grandchildren visit them quite often. Like them, there are a few more Korean War veterans in the island for whom the memories of the bygone era and the pain of Korea's division are still fresh. Chae Ja Eok, born in 1931 in Hwanghae-do, was also a member of the UN8240 Eulji Tiger Brigade Veterans Association. He recalls how their job was to help in rescuing the US Air Force personnel stuck in North Korea after the American jets were shot down. After becoming an official unit, they were armed with artillery and also given US Army uniforms. He was only 19 when he came to Gyodong-do. On August 15, 1945, Korea was finally liberated from Japanese colonial rule. However, this happiness was short-lived as in the same month, the Soviet Army entered North Korea and then came the 38th Parallel, Chae says. The 38th Parallel was initially established as a temporary border by the US and the Soviet Union after World War II to divide the areas of the Japanese surrender. It led to the formation of North and South Korea and now the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), a heavily fortified buffer zone separating the two countries. 'And so, in less than a month since liberation, the Korean peninsula had to go into another suffering," Chae says. 'The pain that we, the displaced people, have gone through is unfathomable." His guerrilla unit was helping the United Nations Command (UNC) to proceed to North Korea. They succeeded in occupying Kaesong, also spelt Gaeseong (a city in North Korea), and waited for the UNC to take over. 'When the UNC couldn't be there on time, we had no choice but to retreat to South Korea," he recalls the events, known as the January 4th Retreat, in 1951. 'A lot of people were displaced during this process. There were many refugees and young people who were engaged in the war but didn't have a place to go after the end of the war. They took refuge in the islands of South Korea," the veteran informs. Gyodong-do was one of them. North Korea's scenic Songak Mountain lies right across Uidu Dondae, a military-controlled area, on Ganghwa-do, where the Ganghwa Peace Observatory is located. Apart from watching that side through binoculars, Chae says that in the past 70 years, he has learnt about life in North Korea only through the media. top videos View all However, even after living almost their entire life on the South Korean side, many of these war veterans long to visit their hometown at least once before they die. They hope that the two countries can be unified again. 'If Germany could become one, I think Koreans can also overcome their differences. We should leave our past behind and walk into the future as one Korea of one ethnicity," Min says. Tsutomu Yamaguchi survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings in 1945 and was officially recognised as the sole double survivor of the blasts On August 6, 1945, near the end of the Second World War, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare on Hiroshima, Japan. The blast instantly killed nearly 80,000 people. Three days later, on August 9, a second atomic bomb struck Nagasaki, causing around 40,000 deaths. Remarkably, one man survived both attacks: Tsutomu Yamaguchi. Officially recognised as the only survivor of both bombings, Tsutomu Yamaguchi passed away in 2010 at the age of 93. Who Was Tsutomu Yamaguchi? At the time of the Hiroshima bombing, Tsutomu Yamaguchi was 29 years old and working as an engineer for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. He was on a three-month business trip in Hiroshima, with August 6 marking his last day in the city. Over the summer, he and his colleagues had been working on plans for a new oil tanker. Eager to return to his wife, Hisako, and young son, Katsutoshi, Tsutomu Yamaguchi was preparing to leave the city. How Did He Survive Hiroshima? On the morning of August 6, Tsutomu Yamaguchi saw an American B-29 bomber release a small object attached to a parachute, the atomic bomb known as 'Little Boy'. Moments later, a bright magnesium flash lit the sky. Tsutomu Yamaguchi jumped into a ditch for cover but was lifted into the air and thrown into a nearby potato field by the blast. When he regained consciousness, the once bright morning had turned dark, his face and hands badly burnt, and his eardrums ruptured. Ash fell heavily as a mushroom cloud hovered over the devastated city. He made his way to the Mitsubishi shipyard ruins, where he found two colleagues, Akira Iwanaga and Kuniyoshi Sato, who had also survived. That night, they sheltered in an air raid bunker, and the next day, hearing the railway station was operational, they left Hiroshima. How Did He Survive Nagasaki? Despite severe injuries, Tsutomu Yamaguchi returned home and was treated at a local hospital on August 8. His wounds were so severe that his family initially did not recognise him; his mother even mistook him for a ghost due to his bandaged appearance and fever. Remarkably, on August 9, he got out of bed and went to work at Mitsubishi's Nagasaki office. During a meeting, as he recounted the Hiroshima bombing, the sky suddenly lit with a bright white glow. Tsutomu Yamaguchi fell to the ground just before the shockwave shattered the office windows, scattering glass and debris. Later, he told The Independent, 'I felt the mushroom cloud was following me from Hiroshima." Official Recognition And Legacy In 2009, a year before his death, Tsutomu Yamaguchi stated, 'My double radiation exposure is now an official government record. It can educate the younger generation about the horrific history of atomic bombings after my death." Tsutomu Yamaguchi passed away in 2010 from stomach cancer at 93. While it is believed around 165 people experienced both bombings, Tsutomu Yamaguchi remains the only person officially recognised by the Japanese government as a ' Niju Hibakusha ', that is, a person affected by both bombs. Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic bomb attacks. According to The Washington Post, roughly 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki. This plutonium-239 based atomic bomb had a more complex and heavier design than 'Little Boy." It was round and wide, about 5 feet in diameter and 10.6 feet long, weighing approximately 10,300 pounds. The Tradition Of Using Codenames Codenames for weapons were commonly used in the Manhattan Project to maintain secrecy. Names like 'Little Boy" and 'Fat Man" were simple, non-technical, and easy to remember, serving more for informal conversation among scientists than for any deep philosophical or military meaning. Some historians believe that the name 'Little Boy" may have been inspired by the popular culture or humour of the time, such as characters from cartoons or movies, like the 1942 film 'The Thin Man." Were These Names Meant To Be A Joke? Scientists working on the Manhattan Project, including Robert Oppenheimer and his colleagues, often used humour to lighten their stressful work. The naming of these bombs reflects the light-hearted atmosphere amidst their confidential tasks. This was likely not a deeply symbolic name, but rather a practical, light-hearted codename, a common practice among scientists of the time. Some historians credit Robert Serber, a leading physicist in the Manhattan Project and close associate of Oppenheimer, with naming the bombs. Naming Other Bombs And Tests The US continued to name other bombs interestingly. Some bombs based on the design of 'Fat Man" were called 'Roundfish" and 'Helda." The Soviet Union named its largest bomb 'Tsar Bomba," reflecting the tradition of 'Tsars" in Russian history. Do All Bombs Have Names? Atomic bombs built during World War II were given specific names, referencing their design or project. Modern nuclear weapons typically use specific codenames or model numbers (e.g., B61, W88, AGM-114 Hellfire) based on technical or military references, rather than personal or humorous names. Examples include B61, a US nuclear bomb with various versions, and MOAB, 'Mother of All Bombs" (GBU-43/B), a powerful non-nuclear bomb named to signify its enormous power. Did The US Build Only Two Atomic Bombs? The US America had prepared the two bombs dropped on Japan in 1945, initially planning to use only these two. Historical documents indicate that America did not have a third bomb ready immediately, but the production of more bombs continued under the Manhattan Project. Cores for additional plutonium bombs were being prepared at the Los Alamos Laboratory, with estimations that another bomb could be ready by the end of August 1945 (around August 19). The US Army considered using more bombs if Japan did not surrender after the first two, with some documents suggesting additional bombs could be ready by September and October 1945 for use on other Japanese cities or strategic targets.
