Phillies Boss Breaks Silence on Alec Bohm Trade Replacement
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies enjoyed a stunning walk-off win on Monday, courtesy of an extra-innings catcher's interference by the Boston Red Sox. The win helped the Phillies maintain their narrow hold on first place in the National League East division. But if they hope to hold onto that lead, they'll need some reinforcement at the trade deadline. Even after signing free agent reliever David Robertson, the Phillies seem most likely to target additional bullpen help as the priority. But it also seems likely they will explore some offensive upgrades, particularly after a harsh injury to third baseman Alec Bohm underscored questions about the bottom of the batting order. "Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm has a fractured left rib and was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday," according to The Associated Press. "Bohm is hitting .278 with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 92 games this season." (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) More Cox/Getty After an All-Star breakout gave way to a brutal slump and a benching in the playoffs last year, Bohm has been the center of trade speculation for the Phillies. And now that he's been ruled out for a crucial stretch of the season, fans might expect that speculation to manifest in a viable replacement. But, speaking out on seeking a trade replacement for Bohm, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski declared the injury hasn't changed his outlook. "Dombrowski said Bohm's injury doesn't change how he views the team's need for a bat, possibly because he already knew the Phils needed one," Todd Zolecki reported for Dombrowski could be counting on Bohm to return after a brief stint on the injured list, or he could feel confident that Otto Kemp is a serviceable replacement at the hot corner. But it seems most likely that with or without a healthy Bohm, the Phillies' front office has been scouring the market for an affordable offensive upgrade. More MLB: Emmanuel Clase Trade? Padres Named 'Best Fit' for Braves Slugger Marcell Ozuna at Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves are reportedly looking to move all of their expiring contracts at the trade deadline, including designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. As the Braves have all but fallen out of the playoff race, MLB insider Jeff Passan believes the Padres are one of the teams that should be pursuing Ozuna too boost their chances of a deep playoff run. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Marcell Ozuna #20 of the Atlanta Braves runs to third base at Sutter Health Park on July 09, 2025 in Sacramento, California. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Marcell Ozuna #20 of the Atlanta Braves runs to third base at Sutter Health Park on July 09, 2025 in Sacramento, California."Ozuna is a stone-cold DH, playing two games in the field in 2023 as his last regular-season experience defensively," wrote Passan. "Ozuna is also in a contract year, but his power numbers are down a notch from his standout .302 average and 39-homer performance last season. His on-base percentage remains among the highest of potential trade candidates. If anyone is moving from Atlanta, he's the likeliest candidate, with free agency beckoning." The Padres have struggled to find consistency this season at the DH spot, so Ozuna would slot into the lineup right away for San Diego. Entering Monday, Ozuna was hitting .235 with 13 home runs, 42 RBI and an OPS+ of 112 despite some recent struggles. "Best fits: San Diego, Seattle, Texas, Detroit, San Francisco," wrote Passan. General manager A.J. Preller has shown in the past that he'll do whatever it takes to make his team as strong as possible heading into the final two months of the regular season and playoffs. He's been creative about it in the past, and he will find new ways this year as well. One aspect that works in the Padres' favor is that Ozuna is a rental, so they will not have to send back as much to Atlanta as they would for a bat with even just an extra year of control. If Ozuna hits well for San Diego, Preller could look to re-sign him in the offseason. More MLB: Yankees' Pursuit of Third Baseman Eugenio Suarez Ramps Up Ahead of Deadline

Patrick Mahomes discusses interest in minority ownership of the Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently spoke with CNBC Media & Sports Reporter Alex Sherman for the CNBC Sport videocast. He discussed his thoughts on a possible interest in minority ownership of the franchise after retirement. "Yeah, I mean, hopefully, that's a long time from now when I retire. But I mean, that would obviously be cool. I mean, Kansas City and the Chiefs have done so much for me, so to be a part of them in any way would be really cool," said Mahomes, "And so I know they do the minority stakes and stuff like that now. I don't think the Chiefs have done that yet, so maybe down the line, but it'll be about 10,15 years from now, or whatever that is. And so hopefully they'll hold the space for me, because you only get a certain amount of minority stakes that they can sell." Mahomes has consistently expressed interest in buying sports teams in the Kansas City area. He has stakes in the MLB's Kansas City Royals and the NWSL's Kansas City Current. The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player has also been prominent in pitches for a hopeful NBA or WNBA franchise in Kansas City. "I think sports are something in this world that are not divisive as far as everybody wants their team to win and they want to go out there and just enjoy the time together." said Mahomes, "And so I love sports so much, and so I invested in all the sports in Kansas City because Kansas City has been great to me. And so it's really cool to go watch these games and have a rooting interest, more than just being a fan, but someone that is invested in the team. And it's made watching the games even more fun." Mahomes has many playing seasons ahead of him, so he won't be focused on ownership for the immediate future.
