SP warns public against clicking on APK file links
He stated that cybercriminals are employing new tactics to deceive users, and opening such links could result in immediate hacking of WhatsApp and mobile phones, leading to severe financial and personal losses.
Explaining the modus operandi through a press release on Tuesday, SP Vikrant Patil said cyber fraudsters are sending malicious APK links disguised as delivery updates, refund links, digital KYC updates, bank rewards, E-challans, PM Kisan documents, and free gift offers.
Once a user downloads and installs these files, the app requests access to sensitive permissions like SMS, contacts, storage, call logs, and notifications. With this access, the criminals can completely control the phone, steal OTPs, banking details, and even siphon money from accounts.
In more serious cases, the fraudsters gain access to a user's phone camera and microphone, collect personal data such as videos and audio recordings, and use them for blackmail.
Vulnerable groups like the elderly, people with disabilities, students, unemployed youth, farmers, and online shoppers are being particularly targeted in these attacks. SP Patil urged the public to be extremely cautious and avoid interacting with any unknown or suspicious links.
The district police advise everyone to only download apps from trusted platforms like the Google Play Store, review app permissions carefully, never share banking or UPI credentials, and uninstall suspicious apps immediately.
Victims of such frauds should call the National Cyber Helpline at 1930, file a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in, or report to the nearest police station.

1 killed, 10 injured in Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Kursk
Moscow: One person was killed and 10 others were injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on a residential building in Russia's Kursk region early Friday, regional governor Alexander Khinshtein said on his Telegram channel. The drone hit a building in the city's Railway District, igniting a fire that engulfed the top four floors, Xinhua News Agency reported, citing preliminary reports. "To our deep sorrow, one woman died. I offer my sincerest condolences to her family," Khinshtein wrote on Telegram. He said that 10 other residents were injured -- one seriously -- and all are receiving medical treatment. Russia on Wednesday accused Ukraine of ramping up attacks ahead of the August 15 meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska. In a statement shared on X, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that 22 people have been killed and another 105 injured due to Ukraine's shelling and drone strikes over the past week. The ministry also shared a map marking the attacked areas in the Russian territory. "With the Russia-US Summit approaching, the Kyiv regime has stepped up its terrorist activity against Russian regions. Over the last week, 127 Russian citizens suffered from shelling and drone attacks. 22 died, 105 were wounded," said Alexei Fadeev, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Deputy Spokesperson. Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry accused the Ukrainian government of planning a provocation aimed at disrupting the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin. In a post on Telegram, the Russian Defence Ministry said, "According to available information received through several channels, the Kyiv regime is preparing a provocation to foil the Russian-American talks scheduled for 15 August 2025." The ministry asserted that with this objective, the security service of Ukraine has sent a group of foreign journalists to Kharkiv's Chuguev, which is under the control of Kyiv, under the pretext of doing "reports on the residents of the city in the frontline zone." The defence ministry also claimed that the Ukrainian forces will carry out the strikes on the city and blame it on Russia. "Immediately ahead of the summit on Friday, the Armed Forces of Ukraine plan a provocative strike using UAVs and missiles against one of the densely populated residential quarters or a hospital with a large number of civilian casualties, which will have to be immediately recorded by the foreign Western journalists," said the Russian Defence Ministry. As a result, the ministry said that the Russian forces will be considered fully responsible for the strikes and civilian casualties. "This will create a negative media background and conditions for disrupting Russian-American cooperation on settling the conflict in Ukraine," the statement read.

Hours after Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra were accused of cheating a Mumbai-based businessman of Rs 60 crore, the actress has now shared a new post on her Instagram stories. On Friday morning, Shilpa took to her social media handle and dropped a video from the sets of Super Dancer Chapter 5. In the clip, Shilpa was seen wishing everyone on Independence Day as she was also joined by her co-judges Geeta Kapur and Marzi Pestonji. The three, along with the contestants on the show, also cheered 'Jai Hind' in the video. In the caption of her post, Shilpa also wrote, 'Saare Jahan Se Accha, Hindustan Hamara". Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra Accused Of Cheating On Thursday, Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra were booked by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for allegedly cheating a Mumbai-based businessman of Rs 60.4 crore in connection with a loan-cum-investment deal. Another unknown person was also charged in connection with the incident. The complainant, Deepak Kothari, has alleged that the couple defrauded him of over Rs 60 crore, which involved Shetty and Kundra's now-defunct company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd. According to Kothari, he invested the amount between 2015 and 2023 under the pretext of expanding a business, but the money was allegedly misused for personal expenses. EOW is now investigating the case. Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra Call Allegations 'Baseless' After the complaint, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's lawyer denied the allegations, saying they were purely civil in nature and had been adjudicated by the NCLT Mumbai on October 4, 2024. 'This is an old transaction, wherein the company went into financial distress and eventually got entangled in a long legal battle at the NCLT. There is no criminality involved, and our auditors have submitted all the necessary supporting documents from time to time, as requested by the EOW, including detailed cash flow statements," said advocate Prashant Patil. 'The investment agreement in question is purely in the nature of an equity investment. The company has already received a liquidation order, which has also been placed before the police department. The concerned Charter accounts have visited the police station for the last one year for more than 15 times with all the evidence supporting the claims of my clients," the lawyer added. Patil called the case 'baseless and malicious", which was aimed at maligning Kundra and Shetty. He also said appropriate action is being initiated from their side against the perpetrators.
