Stags players a 'priority' after safety assured
Manager Nigel Clough says the future of his Mansfield Town squad will be prioritised over his own contract talks after they secured their League One status.
The Stags were already free of relegation fears on Wednesday night when they put an emphatic end to their six-match winless run by beating Peterborough United 4-2 at One Call Stadium.
Clough began talks about staying beyond this season in April, and while they remain ongoing the 59-year-old said his discussions with chairman John Radford have involved more planning for next season.
"I had a very good meeting with the chairman and we sorted a good few things out, so give us a bit of time," Clough told BBC Radio Nottingham.
"It's not actually the priority at the moment - the players are the priority and a few other things and getting that sorted.
"We have plenty of time in the next week or two to get it done."
Mansfield thump Peterborough to end winless run
Clough in talks to remain Mansfield Town boss
When Clough took charge of the Nottinghamshire club in November 2020 they were third from bottom in League Two.
He oversaw automatic promotion to League One last season, ending a 21-year absence from the third tier.
Before this term, the Stags had spent just one season at this level in the past three decades.
A strong start to the campaign had them as high as third in the division in October, but 14 defeats and just three wins from 21 matches before Wednesday night's triumph had the Stags battling for survival.
Before they faced champions Birmingham City on Sunday - a match Mansfield lost 4-0 - Clough spoke of his "relief" at staying up.
Against Peterborough, he said the absence of the "edgy" feeling of relegation anxiety helped deliver one of Mansfield's most emphatic wins of the season.
"Everybody was relaxed tonight," Clough said.
"It could have ended 8-6 and if we had won 8-6 it wouldn't have been an unfair reflection on the game.
"It's lovely to score some goals, lovely to get the three points and to send the supporters home with a smile on their faces. It hasn't happened too much in the last four months, especially here at the One Call."
Clough now wants his side to ensure they "finish on a high" with another win when they host mid-table Exeter City on Saturday.

Micky Mellon's side had trailed twice but scored two goals in as many minutes in the second half of extra time to snatch victory. Advertisement Evans played his role in earning the promotion after joining Oldham on a short-term deal until the end of this season in January. He has made 10 appearances for Oldham, who finished fifth in the National League and had to beat FC Halifax, York City and Southend to book a spot in League Two. Jones a contender as Cardiff hopeful on manager appointment
Cardiff City hope to announce their new manager this week, with Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones still in contention. The Bluebirds are looking for a ninth manager in four years as they prepare for life in League One following their relegation from the Championship this season. Advertisement After a sub-committee compiled a shortlist of around six, chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo have spoken to the candidates and presented their recommendations to owner Vincent Tan, who will have the final say. Jones has been a leading contender since Cardiff sacked previous manager Omer Riza in April, but hiring the Welshman would mean having to pay Charlton a significant compensation fee. Matters are further complicated by the fact Jones led the Addicks to promotion to the Championship last month, meaning they will start next season a division above Cardiff. But Jones is a lifelong Bluebirds fan and has spoken openly about his desire to manage the club one day. Advertisement Des Buckingham and Ian Evatt, former bosses of Oxford United and Bolton Wanderers respectively, have both been interviewed. Cardiff have also held talks with Leicester City assistant coach Brian Barry-Murphy and Wales captain Aaron Ramsey, who took charge of the Welsh club's final three games of this season on a caretaker basis. But Ruben Selles, who was considered for the job when Cardiff sacked Erol Bulut last year, has ruled himself out as he wants to stay in the Championship following his recent dismissal by Hull City. Sources have indicated to BBC Sport Wales that some board members would like to see Tan appoint an experienced manager with a proven track record at this level, such as Jones or Buckingham, who led Oxford to promotion from League One last season. Advertisement Others would favour a different route, with ex-Manchester City academy coach Barry-Murphy and Ramsey still in the frame. Ramsey, whose Cardiff contract expires this summer, has still not decided whether or not he will continue playing next season. The 34-year-old former Arsenal midfielder enjoyed his brief stint in charge of his boyhood club, where he was assisted by his ex-Cardiff and Wales team-mate Chris Gunter among others. If Cardiff were to choose Ramsey or Barry-Murphy, whose only managerial experience came at Rochdale between 2019 and 2021, it has been suggested the club would need to revamp its structure. Advertisement The Bluebirds have been heavily criticised for their perceived lack of football knowledge at board level, with fans and former players calling on Tan to appoint a sporting director or someone of similar standing between the head coach and the board.
