Here's all you should know about the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe, priced at ₹1.35 lakh
Mercedes-Benz has expanded its AMG line-up in India with the introduction of the CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe. Priced at ₹ 1.35 crore (ex-showroom), the two-door performance car is now available for bookings, with deliveries set to begin immediately. Although the engine in this coupe is not a V8, it still lets out throaty growls from the exhaust. It propels the AMG CLE 53 Coupe from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.2 seconds (claimed) and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 kmph, which can be raised to 270 kmph with an optional package. The coupe will directly rival the BMW M2 on Indian soil, although the latter can be acquired at a discount when compared to the former. Underneath, the AMG Ride Control suspension combines steel springs with adaptive damping, adjustable in Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings. Damping rates for rebound and compression are controlled independently, reacting quickly to road and driving conditions. Standard rear-axle steering allows the rear wheels to turn up to 2.5 degrees opposite to the front wheels at speeds under 100 kmph for tighter manoeuvres, or up to 0.7 degrees in the same direction above that speed to aid stability. Power comes from a 3.0-litre M 256M inline six-cylinder petrol engine equipped with twin turbocharging and an electric additional compressor. Modifications such as revised inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, optimised injection, and a larger exhaust gas turbocharger have increased boost pressure to 1.5 bar. Output stands at 449 bhp with 560 Nm of torque, rising to 600 Nm for short bursts using overboost. A second-generation Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) is integrated into the gearbox bell housing. Operating as part of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, it provides 23 bhp and 205 Nm while enabling functions such as regenerative braking, engine-off sailing, and near-instant restarts. The AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission supports fast upshifts and multiple downshifts, with rev-matching on gear changes. It works with the fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, which can continuously adjust torque distribution between the front and rear axles. Official WLTP fuel consumption is between 9.3 and 9.7 litres per 100 km, which translates to 10.3 to 10.7 kmpl. Five AMG Dynamic Select drive modes are available: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. These change throttle response, shift patterns, steering weight, and suspension settings. Manual gear control is possible through steering-mounted paddles using the dedicated M button. The cabin features Artico leather and Microcut microfibre upholstery with AMG-specific graphics and contrast stitching. A 12.3-inch driver display offers multiple layouts, including the AMG Supersport mode, which highlights performance data such as lap times and G-forces. A portrait-style 11.9-inch central touchscreen runs the latest MBUX infotainment interface, controlled via touch, voice commands, or steering wheel buttons. Dynamic ambient lighting with 64 colour choices is standard.

Mahindra plans to export EVs to UK with trade agreement in place
Mumbai-based Mahindra & Mahindra is preparing to export its electric vehicles (EVs) to the United Kingdom, leveraging opportunities arising from the recently finalised India-UK free trade agreement (FTA), Group CEO and Managing Director Anish Shah told PTI Videos. The company, a leading player in India's domestic EV segment, expects electric vehicles to account for 30 per cent of its overall sales by 2030. In 2022, Mahindra inaugurated its Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (M.A.D.E) facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire, which serves as the conceptual hub for the company's electric product portfolio. Shah highlighted India's potential to become a global hub for automobile manufacturing. "We are looking forward to exporting our electric vehicles to the UK and to take a bigger share of the UK market and competing in the UK on the back of this FTA," he said. Shah highlighted the government's approach to the India-UK trade agreement, noting that it opens up the domestic market to UK goods while also boosting Indian exports across multiple industries. He said the FTA is expected to foster innovation and strengthen manufacturing in the country. Using the automobile sector as an example, he pointed out that India has significant potential to become a global auto manufacturing hub. While the industry is currently smaller, improvements in ease of doing business, logistics costs, and import duties are enabling the production of higher-quality vehicles domestically. He added that India's manufacturing hub potential extends beyond domestic firms to global automakers. "We want the best global automakers to be in India and produce in India. It will spur businesses. It will be better... more competition makes us better over time. So it's very important for us to be able to have a very thriving auto industry in India, consumers having the choice of the best cars in the world," Shah said. Addressing concerns over the entry of global EV players such as Tesla and Vinfast into the Indian market, Shah said Mahindra sees competition as a growth opportunity. "We are actually excited about it. And it's something I say in all seriousness, because if you look back at the last 25 years, we had this question come up numerous times," he said, referring to past entries of Ford, Hyundai, and Kia. "And we've not just survived. We've gotten better as we've had competition that came in, and today we are actually standing at a much stronger position," Shah added. The company's strong research and development capabilities in India allow it to manufacture high-quality vehicles at competitive costs, he noted. "We think it's good for India to have a thriving auto ecosystem, and that's something that we feel is better for consumers and good for us," he said. Shah highlighted Mahindra's growing market share in the SUV segment, which has risen from 11 per cent to 27 per cent over time, with a 5.7 percentage-point increase in the last quarter alone. "Now we have not set specific numbers for 2030 as to what a market share should be. Our focus is on developing the best products. Execute very well, and that will enable us to keep a leadership position," he said. Mahindra plans to expand its product range across domestic and international markets. "We will focus on certain markets, first get to a strong market share, then focus on the next set of markets. So we see a lot of opportunities for growth, and it starts with creating the best products," Shah said. On the company's SUV strategy, he added: "We chose to be in SUVs because we had strength in that area. We could build authentic SUVs very well, and we've taken that strength and augmented it by a number of things around more refined cars, much better technology in cars, and that's helped us get where we are. As we go forward. We feel that we may look at other actions, we may look at slightly smaller SUVs to start with." Regarding potential global acquisitions, Shah said Mahindra will prioritise strategic moves that strengthen its core business. "SML (stake acquisition) is a classic example. It's one that takes our truck business to a different level and puts it on a much better path for growth and as we see opportunities to do that and to be able to deliver the returns for our investors, we will do it," he said. On rare earth magnet shortages affecting EV production, Shah said alternatives are being explored. "There are potential alternatives as well. So we are working through some of those," he noted. He added that India has strengthened its resilience through past disruptions such as the semiconductor shortage and expects to manage challenges arising from geopolitical factors. "As I said, it's one of the geopolitical disruptions. We had semiconductors, and going through that has made us stronger, and that has allowed us to look at what are the potential alternatives here. And I believe the government is also doing a lot to look at alternatives for vehicles and permanent magnets as well. So we feel that we should be able to handle that and then move forward on this," Shah said.

Five-pillar plan to make India self-reliant in rare earth magnet production
A report by advisory firm Primus Partners has outlined a comprehensive five-pillar blueprint to localise the production of rare earth magnets in India, aiming to secure the country's electric vehicle (EV) future and reduce its near-total dependence on Chinese imports. Titled "From Extraction to Innovation: A Blueprint for Enhancing Rare Earth Magnet Ecosystem in India's EV Roadmap", the report proposes a strategy spanning from upstream mineral extraction to downstream magnet manufacturing, critical for EVs, wind turbines, and defence technologies. The five pillars of the proposed strategy are market assurance. It suggested government-backed price guarantees and long-term offtake agreements with sectors like auto, defence, and renewables to de-risk investments and counter global neodymium price volatility. It suggested establishing integrated pilot-scale clusters in mineral-rich states such as Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, and identifying three industrial champions to drive rapid scale-up in magnet production. It called for launching a National Rare Earth Innovation Hub to boost R&D in recycling, magnet efficiency, and process technology. Recycling could supply up to 40 kt of rare earth magnets' global demand by 2030. Further, it asked for the formation of a Magnet Ecosystem Coordination Cell to align ministries, fast-track clearances, and track progress within a 3-5 year strategic window. Over 90 per cent of India's magnet imports come from China, which controls 92 per cent of global magnet manufacturing. Recent export restrictions and customs delays in China disrupted supply chains for Indian companies, including leading auto component makers. Davinder Sandhu, Co-Founder and Chairperson of Primus Partners, stated, "India has both the reserves and the demand. Yet despite holding the 5th largest rare earth reserves, we account for less than 1 per cent of global magnet production. The INR 34,300 crore outlay under the Critical Minerals Mission is a strong start, but we can't afford to remain resource-rich and capacity-poor." "China spent decades building its dominance; India doesn't have that luxury. We must compress that journey through bold investments in technology, fast-tracked clearances, and strong industry-research partnerships to scale extraction, processing, and recycling." According to Nikhil Dhaka, Vice President, "As the sustainable mobility sector accelerates, we need a national effort to de-risk EV manufacturing at its core. Without urgent localisation, technology innovation, faster approvals, and strong private-sector partnerships, every vehicle we build will carry the same import dependence we face today." China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. The central government, on its part, has earmarked Rs 1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India. (ANI)
