Mock drills in States bordering Pakistan today
Jaipur: Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, mock drills will be conducted on Thursday in the border states of Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat and Punjab, officials said on Wednesday.
These drills in the states bordering Pakistan will be held following directives from the Union government, as these areas came under heavy attack from across the border during the recent conflict between the two nations.
Sirens will be sounded during the drills, and emergency preparedness systems will be closely examined.
The Civil Defence department in Rajasthan has already initiated preparations and is issuing instructions to all districts.
Special emphasis is being placed on the districts located along the India-Pakistan border, where enhanced measures are underway.
Jodhpur District Collector Gaurav Agarwal confirmed that a mock drill will be held in Jodhpur on Thursday, although the exact timing is yet to be finalised.
Barmer Collector Tina Dabi added, 'We have received instructions regarding the mock drill scheduled for tomorrow. A meeting will be held to plan its implementation.' This comes after a similar exercise was conducted on May 7 in 28 cities across Rajasthan, aimed at preparing for potential air strikes.
The increased focus on emergency preparedness came after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 when, in response, the Indian defence forces launched 'Operation Sindoor', targeting nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir and Pakistan in which over 100 terrorists were neutralised. The operation has led to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
A mock drill is a simulation exercise designed to assess how the public and administration would respond in the event of an emergency, such as an air strike or bomb attack.

Riga [Latvia], May 30 (ANI): The all-party delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi met with Andzejs Vilumsons, the State Secretary of Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Andrejs Pildegovics, Ambassador of Special Tasks of the Secretariat of the Candidate of Latvia to the UN Security Council and Permanent Representative of Latvia to the UN on Friday. Earlier in the day, the delegation led by Kanimozhi held a joint meeting in Latvia's Riga with the chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Friendship group of Parliamentarians for India. The meeting was held at the Latvian Saeima, which is a unicameral parliament of Latvia. The delegation members also interacted with think tank members and senior officers from the foreign and other ministries. The Kanimozhi-led delegation arrived in Latvia's capital, Riga, on Friday. India's ambassador to Latvia, Namrata Kumar, welcomed them. Following the arrival of the all-party delegation in Latvia, the Indian Ambassador to Latvia, Namrata Kumar, stressed the importance of the Indian delegation's visit to Latvia. She said that the delegation will stress India's position on terrorism and its zero tolerance for the issue. She further mentioned that during the first high-level visit following the opening of the resident mission in Latvia, the delegation will also speak about mobilising a global alliance for the fight against terrorism. 'The delegation is here especially for a very specific objective to stress our position on terrorism, zero tolerance for terrorism and our continuous fight against terrorism. India and Latvia share very strong and friendly relations. This is also testified by the fact that last year we opened our resident Mission here, which shows that the bilateral relations between the two countries are growing. While interacting with the Indian diaspora on Wednesday (local time), she added that the government's outreach, which includes opposition MPs, reflects a united stance against cross-border terrorism and a firm resolve to say 'no more' after years of suffering. 'Our Prime Minister and the Government of India have made a decision to reach out to countries. Our delegation, except Capt Brijesh Chowta, is made up of all of the opposition parties. Our Prime Minister and the country have clearly stated that we will no longer differentiate between state-sponsored terrorism and terrorist activities of individuals and groups. India has suffered enough, and the time has come to say no more,' Kanimozhi said. Espionage case: 800 members of Varanasi man's WhatsApp groups on ATS radar
LUCKNOW The UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) is scanning credentials of around 800 people added to 19 'anti-national' WhatsApp groups operated by Tufail Maqsood, 34, who was arrested by the agency from Varanasi on May 21 on charges of spying for Pakistan, said officials on Friday. The details have been retrieved from Tufail's phone and credentials of people linked to his social media network are being cross-checked, said officials interrogating the accused. Tufail Maqsood, Delhi resident Mohd Harun, 45, who was arrested from Noida by UP ATS on May 21 and Rampur resident Shahzad Wahab, 35, who was nabbed in the same connection from Moradabad on May 18, are in ATS custody for interrogation. An ATS official said Tufail created around 19 WhatsApp groups to connect with different people of seven east UP districts including Varanasi, Jaunpur, Mau, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Chandauli and Ghazipur. He allegedly radicalised them in the name of religion by posting inflammatory speeches of clerics and terror group 'leaders'. 'He posted content related to 'establishing Muslim rule in India before 2047 and enforcing Shariat law in the country'. And these contents were shared to him by a Pakistani woman Nafisa, whom he was in touch with for the past four months after coming in contact through social media platforms,' the official said. He said Nafisa's social media profile revealed that she was in touch with 240 youths in India, including six from UP districts including Varanasi, Lucknow, Bareilly, Kannauj, Moradabad and Rampur. 'It is suspected that Pakistan's secret agency ISI has been using Nafisa to connect with Indian youths and radicalise them to rope them in for spying and other nefarious activities,' added the official. Nafisa is suspected to have built a strong network of Indian youths and spreading hatred by inciting Muslim youths in the name of religion and atrocities on minorities in the country. She had roped in Tufail to make strengthen her network among youths, the official said. Earlier, the ATS had claimed that Tufail Maqsood, a resident of Jaitpura, Varanasi, was in touch with at least 600 Pakistani mobile numbers and shared sensitive information related to India's security. The agency stated that Tufail is highly radicalised as he used to share videos of banned Pak-based terror outfit Tehreek-e-Labbek's leader Maulana Shaad Rizvi and content related to 'revenge for Babri mosque demolition'.

Common compute capacity surpasses 34,000 GPUs in India: Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi: India's national compute capacity has crossed 34,000 GPUs, the government said on Friday, adding that three new startups have been selected to build AI foundation models. Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that 367 datasets have already been uploaded to 'AI Kosh'. The minister also underlined IndiaAI Mission's role in fostering reverse brain drain and creating a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing foundational models, compute capacity, safety standards, and talent development initiatives. He emphasised that these efforts are aimed at building a complete and inclusive AI ecosystem in India. The 'IndiaAI Foundation Model' pillar within the India AI Mission aims to develop and deploy indigenous foundational models trained on India-specific data. Till April 30, 506 proposals have been received. On April 26, Sarvam AI was selected to build India's sovereign large language model (LLM) ecosystem, developing an open-source 120 billion parameter AI model to enhance governance and public service access through use cases like "2047: Citizen Connect" and "AI4Pragati". This follows the earlier launch of the Sarvam-1 model (2 billion parameters) and the Sarvam-M (24B parameters) model with hybrid reasoning capabilities. Vaishnaw urged the newly selected teams under the IndiaAI Mission to aim for a top-five global position in their respective sectors. Soket AI will develop India's first open-source 120 billion parameter foundation model optimised for the country's linguistic diversity, targeting sectors such as defence, healthcare, and education. Gnani AI will build a 14 billion parameter Voice AI foundation model delivering multilingual, real-time speech processing with advanced reasoning capabilities, while Gan AI will create a 70 billion parameter multilingual foundation model targeting "Superhuman TTS (text-to-speech)" capabilities to surpass current global leaders. Emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of democratisation of technology, Vaishnaw said, 'Technology should not be left in the hands of a few. It's very important that a larger section of society should be able to access technology, develop new solutions and get better opportunities.'
