And after selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds the squad is short of a midfielder.
Boss Eddie Howe likes to have six central midfielders to choose from and has identified McGinn as a possible arrival, report the Daily Mail.
The Scotland international is a stalwart at Villa and still has two years remaining on his contract.
But Unai Emery's side could be persuaded to sell in order to meet PSR regulations.

Another Villa midfielder, Jacob Ramsey, is another player Newcastle have looked at, while Coventry's Jack Rudoni has caught the eye.
Newcastle are in desperate need of incomings after failing to land key targets, with Benjamin Sesko the latest.
The RB Leipzig striker appears to be Manchester United-bound despite Toon having a bid accepted.
But United have matched Newcastle's £74million bid and Sesko wants to move to Old Trafford.

That means Newcastle's search for a striker continues with Alexander Isak's future hanging in the balance.
Toon knocked back a £120m bid for the Swede from Liverpool, and he has spent much of pre-season training elsewhere, at his former club Real Sociedad.

And although he is ready to return to Newcastle training, he has been left out by Howe.
The Magpies are now weighing up a move for Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, who could be available this summer.

Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson prefers Premier League stay after Bayern Munich make contact over £80m Newcastle target

BAYERN MUNICH have contacted Nicolas Jackson's entourage as they look to replace the injured Jamal Musiala. The German giants are one of a few clubs in Europe that could still afford Jackson despite having signed Luis Diaz from Liverpool for £65.5million this summer. But SunSport has been exclusively told the player would prefer to stay in the Premier League. The Chelsea striker is expected to be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, but his options appear limited. Manchester United held talks with Jackson but ultimately chose to go all-in for Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko. Aston Villa expressed an interest, with Jackson still maintaining a good relationship with Unai Emery, the manager who gave him his breakthrough in Europe after his move from Senegal. However, Chelsea's £70–80million valuation of the player has made a move financially difficult for many. And that leaves Newcastle, who have turned their attention to Jackson after missing out a host of strikers this summer, including Sesko and now-Liverpool star Hugo Ekitike. The Toon desperately need to bring at least one front man in, with Alexander Isak destined to leave in a British-record move to Anfield. Advertisement That said, those same sources admit the player's current situation is 'not ideal,' and a deal that suits both Chelsea and Jackson will be seriously considered. Chelsea star Levi Colwill to miss almost entire season as he undergoes emergency ACL surgery in huge blow to Maresca Jackson has been Chelsea's first-choice striker for the past two seasons scoring 24 league goals in 64 appearances, but the arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer is set to limit, if not eliminate his game time. Both Delap and Pedro have made flying starts to life at Chelsea, playing key roles in the club's recent Club World Cup triumph in the United States. Meanwhile, Jackson was sent off twice in his last four appearances for the Blues. The writing was on the wall when Jackson was left on the bench for the final, where Cole Palmer reminded everyone why he's regarded as one of the world's best young players, scoring two stunning goals. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca left the door open for Jackson's departure in his first press conference, stating that "anything can happen" during the transfer window. 6 Liam Delap arrived at Chelsea as a man with a growing reputation Credit: Getty 6 Joao Pedro has had a storming start to life as a Chelsea player Advertisement The Blues boss said: "Nico is okay. He's okay. 'When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico's situation. 'At the moment, we had two new strikers, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, both of whom are currently in the USA. So we will see what happens." Chelsea will take on Bayer Leverkusen tonight in what is their first pre-season game and it will be interesting to see the kind of role Jackson will play-if he plays.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot refuses to be drawn on Alexander Isak speculation

ARNE SLOT REFUSED to be drawn on speculation continuing to link Liverpool with a big-money move for Newcastle forward Alexander Isak as he declared himself happy with his current squad. The Premier League champions have invested huge sums in the market this summer with a club-record deal for midfielder Florian Wirtz headlining a group of new signings that also includes forward Hugo Ekitike, left-back Milos Kerkez and right-back Jeremie Frimpong. But they have continued to pursue Isak, having an initial bid of £110million rejected by Newcastle, as they seek a replacement for Darwin Nunez who is closing in on a £46million move to Saudi club Al Hilal. Asked about Isak on Friday, Slot said: 'As you know, from me and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players that are not yours. I can talk about Hugo, who we have signed and who has done really well until now. 'We are very happy with the squad and have every reason to be happy because we won the league last season. OK, players left but we brought players in as well and youngsters are doing good.' Advertisement At this moment of time, Darwin might leave, indeed, but things are not signed so we need to wait a few days until that is completely done but there is indeed a chance he is going to leave.' Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Liverpool's spending spree – at almost £300million – has not included a central defender despite the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. During pre-season midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo, as well as full-backs Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, have all filled in, and Slot denied that a lack of depth behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez is a major concern.' Unfortunately, (Gomez) has a minor injury at the moment but he will be back with the team very soon,' he said. 'We have numerous options who can play there. But as always, it's the same boring answer as players we may bring in or not, I am really happy with the players we have. 'While new signings have been bedded in, one player who has grabbed the limelight during pre-season has been 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who has recorded three goals and two assists this summer with some eye-catching displays – the most recent coming against Athletic Bilbao on Monday. Slot knows he must handle Ngumoha's development with care, but he looks ready to be part of the first-team squad. 'That is sometimes also difficult and you never know how an individual handles the situation,' he said. 'A year ago, Trey Nyoni scored a goal against Sevilla when he was 17, very young. They have an incredible chance to work and be around players like Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and all these incredible players every day and see what they do to be ready to perform every three days… 'It's been a promising start for him and Trey Nyoni because Trey also played a very good game at Anfield four days ago.'
