"People living in rural areas are turning up in good numbers for cancer screening, given they are familiar with the healthcare personnel working in their localities. However, people residing in urban areas are reluctant to provide their details as they are mistaking that these cancer screening tests are being conducted by private hospitals and suspect misuse of data," an NCD consultant overseeing the cancer screening tests told TOI.
Meanwhile, health minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav reviewed the cancer screening survey result analysis with government advisor for cancer diseases and world-renowned Oncologist Dr Nori Dattatreyudu and special chief secretary (medical and health) MT Krishna Babu on Tuesday.
Dr Dattatreyudu suggested the govt to immediately issue a notification notifying cancer as a notifiable disease to maintain a reporting system to keep track of the disease trends in the state.
He also suggested the govt to set up a dashboard with details on the range of cancer testing and treatment services available at both govt and private hospitals in the state.
Meanwhile, Krishna Babu mentioned that the state govt is developing King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam, TATA Trust Hospital, and govt general hospitals (GGHs) in Guntur, Kurnool, and Tirupati as main hubs for providing cancer care in the state.

High on hope: Rehab retention hits record in Ludhiana, centres keep addicts hooked on recovery.

Ludhiana: Govt-run deaddiction centres in this Punjab district have reported a sharp rise in patient retention, with more than 61% of addicts remaining in treatment this year as opposed to just 41% in 2020. Health experts claim that the increase reflects greater access to outpatient opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) services and expanded availability of medicines such as buprenorphine across the district. At civil hospital's Navjeevan Kendra, psychiatrist Dr Arvind Goyal said retention rates for men and women were almost equal, and that decentralising medicine distribution to local Nasha Mukti Dawai Kendras had made treatment more accessible. "Patients now get four to five days' supply at centres near their homes, which keeps them engaged in therapy," Goyal said. He said the initiative, guided by civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur, aims to encourage patients to stay in treatment for a better life. Data from govt centres shows that retention rose to 52% in 2021, 56% in 2022, 57% in 2023, and 61% in 2024, with the figure reaching 61.6%, so far, in 2025. Of the 22,000 patients enrolled in Ludhiana district, 2,600 are registered at civil hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Also, 70-75% of them are addicted to heroin, 15% to poppy husk, and 5% to prescription drugs, tramadol mainly. Patients say the changes have made treatment more sustainable. A Sahnewal resident told The TOI that he had to travel to the city previously for medicines but could now access those at a nearby centre. "I don't have to spend on travel, and that makes it easier to continue," he said. Psychiatrists credit a mix of awareness drives, govt crackdowns on drug trafficking, and declining drug quality with pushing addicts toward treatment. Dr Anshu Gupta, a Ludhiana-based psychiatrist, said fear of the law and greater awareness of health risks had encouraged patients to stick with therapy. "Dropouts are much fewer now, and the trend is very positive," he said. MSID:: 123408301 413 | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
