Laureano singles in Bogaerts in the 10th as the Padres walk-off the Red Sox, 5-4
With runners on first and second and the infield drawn in, Laureano, obtained from Baltimore at the trade deadeline, hit a chopper off off Garrett Whitlock (5-2) over third baseman Alex Bregman into left field. Bogaerts, who had a big game against his former team, scored.
Boston's Roman Anthony tied it in the ninth when a ground-rule double off All-Star closer Robert Suarez that brought in Ceddanne Rafaela.
Bogaerts homered, had an RBI single and walked.
Manny Machado cost San Diego at least one run with a failed hidden-ball trick before Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito walked in two straight runs during a fifth-inning meltdown that gave the Padres the lead.
With the Red Sox leading 3-2, Giolito allowed Fernando Tatis Jr.'s leadoff single in the fifth and then retired Machado and Luis Arreaz. But he then walked four straight batters, including Ryan O'Hearn and Ramón Laureano with the bases loaded, and was lifted.
Giolito walked Jackson Merrill on four straight pitches, threw only one strike to Bogaerts and O'Hearn and went to a full count against Laureano. He allowed four runs and five hits, walked six and struck out one.
Bogaerts, who signed a $280 million, 11-year free agent deal with the Padres in December 2022, homered leading off the second, his 10th, to tie it 1. He singled in Arraez with two outs in the third to pull the Padres to 3-2.
With one out in the top of the third, Jarren Duran took his lead off third base and Machado still had the ball after Alex Bregman was caught in a rundown on the previous play. With reliever Wandy Peralta on the rubber, Machado tagged Duran, who pointed to the mound. Third base umpire Scott Barry called a balk, and Duran scored to give Boston a 2-1 lead. Trevor Story moved from second to third.
By rule, the pitcher cannot be on the rubber for a hidden-ball trick to be legal. If another player tags a runner while the pitcher is on or straddling the rubber, it's a balk.
Masataka Yoshida then hit a grounder to bring in Story and make it 3-1.

HOUSTON (AP) — Ramón Urías had three hits with a two-run homer and Chas McCormick hit his first homer this season as the Houston Astros built a big lead and held on for a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. Carlos Correa hit an RBI single to help the Astros to the victory after they were swept in Boston to start the month. It was his first home game since rejoining the team in a blockbuster trade from the Twins. Houston starter Cristian Javier (1-0) had a solid outing in his return after sitting out more than 14 months following Tommy John surgery. Nets' Cam Thomas' next contract could be similar to other signees
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas heads into August as an unsigned, restricted free-agent who seems to be waiting until he can figure out how he wants to address his immediate future. Reports throughout the summer have suggested that Thomas and Brooklyn are not seeing eye-to-eye, but there is some information on what his next contract in free-agency could look like. "Of the four prominent players in restricted free agency this summer, Thomas is most likely to be on his qualifying offer next season," ESPN's Tim Bontemps wrote on Monday when discussing the latest on Thomas. Bontemps echoed what others in the NBA space have been saying about Thomas in that he seems like the most likely player to bet on himself next season so that he can sign the deal he wants next summer. "The 23-year-old scoring guard's contract value has been difficult to peg since he slipped to late in the first round in 2022," Bontemps continued. "If a deal gets done with Brooklyn, expect it to look, at least in structure, like the ones the Nets signed with center Day'Ron Sharpe and forward Ziaire Williams earlier this offseason: one-year deals with team options on the second." Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his career when he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land during the 2024-25 season. Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported earlier this offseason that Thomas was looking for a contract around $30 million per season based off other players that are making around that figure annually. Ultimately, Thomas seems to be between a rock and a hard place as Brooklyn has the leverage on him due to his restricted status along with the Nets being the only team with cap space to submit a substantial offer sheet to him. Assuming that Brooklyn indeed offered Thomas a two-year contract for $14.1 million per season, he could be better off taking his $5.99 million qualifying offer (QO) so that he can be an unrestricted free-agent next offseason.
