Work to improve junction where cyclist was killed by lorry begins
Emma Burke Newman was killed after being involved in a collision with an HGV at a set of traffic lights on the Broomielaw near the George V Bridge on January 27, 2023.
The 22-year-old was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital following the incident but died a short time later.

Lorry driver Paul Mowat, 69, admitted causing her death by careless driving and was given a community sentence in April 2024.
Her family and friends called for improved safety for cyclists, and Glasgow City Council started a series of works to expand and improve cycle lanes across the city. Glasgow City Council Visualisation of the redesigned junction on the George V Bridge
The project on the riverside will be part of a 13-week overhaul including new protected cycle paths and upgraded pedestrian crossings.
The road layout will be reconfigured to reduce the number of live traffic lanes from five to three, freeing up space used to install segregated cycle lanes on the bridge deck.
Becca Thomas, a friend and colleague of Emma's, representing the Waiting to Happen campaign, which aims to improve road infrastructure, told STV News: 'The worst thing that happened after she died here was people saying that was just an accident waiting to happen.
'Why do we wait? Why do we need a tragedy, the loss of a wonderful young life taken far too soon, to make the changes we know should happen?
'This junction has always been really challenging, you have a lot of road space and a lot of different ways to be on a bike, but no one really knows where you're supposed to be.
'You can be vulnerable, you can be on the road or on the pavement with pedestrians…all junctions should really simple.'
The area will also benefit from new, soft landscaped areas and the addition of street trees.
North of the bridge, new cycle lanes will connect with the upcoming Broomielaw/Clyde Street Avenue, which will offer east-west active travel connections, while the south side will link to the South City Way.
Advanced signage will be installed at key locations to redirect pedestrians and road traffic.
While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, road users are being warned that increased traffic flows on alternative routes are anticipated, which may impact journey times.

Man charged after police chase ends with car crash in residential area
A man has been charged after a police chase ended with a vehicle crashing in a residential area of Edinburgh. Police launched a pursuit of a vehicle after it failed to stop on Captains Road at around 12pm on Tuesday. The vehicle involved subsequently crashed on The Wisp. There were no reports of injuries. Farms 'severely impacted' after thieves break into sheds to steal quad bikes
Police have said that Aberdeenshire farms have been 'severely impacted' after five quad bikes were stolen. The vehicles were taken from sheds along the A97, between Alford and Aberchirder, between Friday, August 15, and Sunday, August 17. Officers believe a grey Ford Ranger pick-up was used to tow them away on a trailer and have asked for any witnesses to come forward. Detective constable Douglas Morrison said: 'These thefts have severely impacted the farming community in this area. 'Enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed anything to contact us. 'We also ask anyone with dash-cam footage that could assist our enquiries to come forward. Man created deepfake naked images of school friend using AI
A man used artificial intelligence to create deepfake naked images of his high school friend and shared them with people he knew. Callum Brooks, 25, altered two social media pictures posted by the woman on June 24, 2022. Brooks used photoshop software to make the woman appear in a 'state of undress' without her knowledge or consent. Brooks, of Glasgow's Easterhouse, claimed that there was 'no sexual element' to his actions which was accepted by the Crown. The first offender stated that he carried out the crime to show what the software did. Brooks pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to disclosing a photograph of the woman in an intimate situation without her consent. The case is one of the first of its kind to appear in a Scottish court. The court heard that Brooks and the woman had been friends at high school and remained in contact on social media. Prior to the crime, Brooks obtained a software application which altered images using artificial intelligence (AI). Prosecutor Katie Malcolm said: 'Brooks took two images from the woman's Instagram account which she uploaded online in which she was fully clothed. 'Brooks then altered the images so that they showed the woman to be in a state of undress. 'One was a full length image and the other was from the waist up. 'Brooks then sent the images to two friends.' The hearing was told that the woman 'knew nothing' about the images. She was asked by one of Brooks' friends in February 2024 about her knowledge of the images which were shown to her. Ms Malcolm added: 'She was immediately embarrassed and humiliated. 'She confirmed that the images were lifelike and the matter was reported to the police.' Brooks was arrested and told officers: 'It was really just pettiness on the part of people – I know I shouldn't have done that, I shouldn't have done Photoshop.' He stated that one of his friends requested the images while the other did not. Gerry Devaney, defending, told the court that Brooks had fell out with one of his friends after the images had been sent. The lawyer added: 'The friend drew the attention of the woman who was unaware of the situation and the friend showed it to her. 'The intention was to show what the software did – it was fairly novel at the time and he took advantage which he much regrets. 'There was no significant sexual element – this was the behaviour on the part of a boy towards people he thought were his friends and he has come to regret it.' Sheriff Anna Reid fined Brooks £335.
