Ohio University Zanesville recognized for boosting student outcomes and careers

Yahoo19-05-2025

ZANESVILLE − Ohio University Zanesville has been recognized as an Opportunity College and University, according to an announcement.
The designation comes from the recently updated Carnegie Classifications and its new Student Access and Earnings classification, which highlight institutions whose graduates exceed earnings expectations compared to their regional peers and successfully enroll Pell-eligible and underrepresented students.
OUZ was also recognized as a Special Focus institution due to its significant number of graduates in nursing and health professions.
'Ohio University Zanesville is committed to advancing health care education and addressing the critical needs of our community, our region and beyond,' said Lewatis McNeal, vice provost for regional higher education and partnerships at Ohio University. 'The new Carnegie Classifications designations reflect our collective mission to provide students with a high-value education that prepares them for high-demand careers.'
The campus has been bolstered by a gift from the J.W. & M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation, which has helped address the region's need for skilled nurses. Ohio University's nursing programs are nationally ranked, with graduates often securing positions across Ohio and beyond.
Approximately 61% of Ohio University Zanesville graduates complete degrees in nursing or health-related professions, while more than 17% earn degrees in general studies or related fields.
Around 36% of students at Ohio University Zanesville receive Pell Grants, with many qualifying to earn their degree for free through the Ohio Regional Promise Program. The program covers the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees for incoming full-time, Pell-eligible freshmen with a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.

Education Department says Columbia fails to meet accreditation standard

The Education Department announced on Wednesday that Columbia University was in violation of federal antidiscrimination law, which puts it at risk of losing federal student loans and Pell Grants. The federal agency said it was notifying Middle States Commission on Higher Education (the Commission), a college accreditation group that gatekeeps which schools can receive student loans, of the Title VI violation, arguing the failure means the organization should strip Columbia of its accreditation status. 'After Hamas' October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel, Columbia University's leadership acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus. This is not only immoral, but also unlawful. Accreditors have an enormous public responsibility as gatekeepers of federal student aid,' Education Secretary Linda McMahon said. 'Just as the Department of Education has an obligation to uphold federal antidiscrimination law, university accreditors have an obligation to ensure member institutions abide by their standards,' McMahon said. 'We look forward to the Commission keeping the Department fully informed of actions taken to ensure Columbia's compliance with accreditation standards including compliance with federal civil rights laws.' The Hill has reached out to Columbia for comment. Losing accreditation would be the biggest hit any university could take from the Trump administration. It means a school would no longer be eligible for federal student loans or Pell Grants, making an institution inaccessible to most of the country. The Commission said it has received a letter from the department about this matter but has no comment at this time. The finding that Columbia violated Title VI comes after the university has capitulated to many of the Trump administration's demands, such as revising its disciplinary and protesting policies. The university has also lost hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding, as President Trump has seen Columbia as one of the worst offenders in alleged inaction to combat antisemitism. The move to notify Columbia's accreditor brings the worst fear of those in the higher education sphere into reality, as many have been nervous Trump's fight with the country's universities could end up here.

Columbia failed to meet accreditation standards, US government says

By Jasper Ward WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Department of Education said on Wednesday it has notified a university accreditation body that Columbia University had violated federal anti-discrimination laws by its alleged failure to protect Jewish students on its campus. The violation means that Columbia has not met the standards of accreditation set by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the department said. "Accreditors have an enormous public responsibility as gatekeepers of federal student aid. They determine which institutions are eligible for federal student loans and Pell Grants," U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement. The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Columbia has been the epicenter of a pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel student protest movement that roiled U.S. campuses over the last year and a half as Israel's war in Gaza raged. The Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services said last month that an investigation found that the university had acted with "deliberate indifference" towards the harassment of Jewish students during campus protests.

SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX 'Although the centers are closing, the Division of Student Life remains deeply committed to fostering student success, student belonging and ensuring continued access to resources, benefits students have consistently associated with the centers,' Senior Vice President for Student Life Eboni Pringle said in a statement Monday. Senate Bill 1 also prohibits faculty strikes, regulates classroom discussion of 'controversial' topics, creates post-tenure reviews, puts diversity scholarships at risk, creates a retrenchment provision that blocks unions from negotiating on tenure, shortens university board of trustees terms from nine years down to six years, and requires students take an American history course, among other things. S.B. 1 has affected other public and community colleges in Ohio, where some are taking administrative action and others are attempting to fight the measure. Ohio University is closing its Pride Center, the Women's Center and the Multicultural Center. Ohio State University is closing its Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Student Life's Center for Belonging and Social Change. The University of Toledo is suspending nine undergraduate programs in response to S.B. 1. Miami University announced it will close the Office of Transformational and Inclusive Excellence and the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion.
