Body of 10-year-old Rohingya girl who fell into drain found in river

KUALA LUMPUR: The body of a 10-year-old girl was found about six kilometres from where she was swept away by strong currents after falling into a drain yesterday evening.
The victim, believed to be of Rohingya descent, was reported missing after she fell into a drain in front of the MPAJ Hall in Kampung Cheras Baru at about 6.07pm.
Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the search and rescue (SAR) team, which resumed operations this morning, found the girl's body in Sungai Kerayong, Taman Cheras Indah.
"The body was discovered about six kilometres from where the victim was last seen," he said in a statement.
The body has been sent to the Forensic Unit of Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
It is understood that during the incident, two Rohingya children fell into the large drain and were swept away by strong currents.
One of the children was rescued by members of the public, while the other was carried away before help could arrive.
Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that personnel from the Cheras and Bandar Tun Razak stations, including the Water Rescue Unit, rushed to the scene following a distress call at 4.23pm.
"Upon combing the area, they were unable to locate the victim. Around 7pm, the SAR was temporarily halted due to heavy rain and resumed at 9pm.
"However, after assessing the risks involved, we called off the search at almost 10pm," it said.
This morning, the SAR, led by operations commander Mohd Riduan Akhyar, resumed at 10am at the Jalan Kuari drain but yielded no results.
The team then combed another area at 11.20am, leading to the river near Taman Maju Jaya, Cheras Indah, where they found the victim.
The child's remains were handed over to the police.

Long Tiger gets 12 years' jail, 5 strokes of rotan for raping married woman

Hamim Hamid was accused of raping a woman in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Hamim Hamid, a Rohingya man notoriously known as 'Long Tiger', was sentenced by the court today to 12 years' imprisonment and five strokes of the rotan for raping a married woman in 2019. Harian Metro reported that Muar sessions court judge Irwan Suainbon pronounced the sentence on the 36-year-old after the court ruled that he had failed to raise a reasonable doubt to the prosecution's case. Irwan said the accused's defence to the charge was merely a bare denial. 'The defence presented by the accused also failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'The court has determined that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. 'The court also found that the statement from the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness, was a fabrication and cannot be believed,' he said. Hamim was accused of raping a married woman, who was 19 years old at the time, in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping upon conviction. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Arif Marzuki asked the court to consider the public interest, the seriousness of the crime, and the trauma inflicted when sentencing. 'It is even more appalling that the victim had just suffered a miscarriage a few days prior to the rape,' he said. The court said Hamim's jail sentence would run from the date of his arrest on Aug 7, 2021. He is currently serving another four-year sentence for extortion by threat of accusation of an offence, under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The Tangkak magistrates' court also sentenced him to 12 months' imprisonment on Jan 20, 2022, for escaping custody on Dec 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to two years' imprisonment, a fine or both.

In Johor, ‘Long Tiger' jailed 12 years, whipped for raping married woman who had just miscarried

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — A Rohingya man known as 'Long Tiger' was today sentenced to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Muar, Johor, after being found guilty of raping a married woman four years ago. Judge Irwan Suainbon handed down the sentence to Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, 36, after ruling that the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt over the charge, Harian Metro reported today. In delivering his judgment, Irwan stated that the defence's arguments amounted to mere denial. 'Furthermore, the accused's defence failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'After reviewing both oral and written submissions from the prosecution and defence, the court concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. 'The court also found the testimony of the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness (DW11), to be fabricated and unreliable,' he said. Throughout the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses. According to the charge, Long Tiger raped a 19-year-old woman at a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak between 1pm and 2.05pm on September 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Arif Marzuki urged the court to consider public interest, noting the gravity of the offence and its lasting psychological impact on the victim. 'It is especially revolting that the accused raped the victim, who had just recently suffered a miscarriage. She was his employee and was subjected to this horrific abuse,' he submitted. The court ruled that the prison sentence would take effect from the date of his arrest, 7 August 2021. Long Tiger is currently serving a four-year sentence handed down by the Tangkak Magistrates' Court after being convicted under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The father of two must complete that sentence before serving the one under Section 376(1). On January 20, 2022, he was sentenced by the same court to 12 months' imprisonment for escaping custody at 11.55am on December 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for that offence, which provides for up to two years in jail, a fine, or both. Additionally, on June 1, 2022, the Muar High Court overturned a discharge not amounting to an acquittal previously granted by the Tangkak Magistrates' Court on May 17 in the Section 388 case, citing an error in the original order.

'Long Tiger' jailed 12 years for raping married woman

MUAR: A man popularly known as "Long Tiger" has been sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment and five strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court for raping a married woman four years ago. Judge Irwan Suainbon handed Long Tiger, also known as Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, his sentence after finding him guilty, following the defence's failure to raise reasonable doubt in the Rohingya man's case. In his judgment, Irwan said the court found that the accused's defence amounted to a mere denial. "Furthermore, the defence presented by the accused could not refute the prosecution's prima facie case. "In addition, the court found that the testimony from the accused's wife, a defence witness, was largely fabricated and not credible," he said. According to the charge, Hamim was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman at a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code for rape, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Arif Marzuki urged the court to consider public interest and the seriousness of the offence, which had caused trauma to the victim. "It is even more appalling that the accused raped the victim, who had just suffered a miscarriage a few days prior. The victim was his employee, and he dared to treat her in such a manner," he said. During proceedings, the court ruled that Hamim's prison sentence would take effect from the date of his arrest, Aug 7, 2021. He is currently serving a separate four-year sentence for extortion, which must be completed first. Outside the court, Hamim threatened journalists who were taking his photo.
