Egypt's Electricity Minister discusses progress on Greece power link
Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy has met with the head of Greece's Copelouzos Group to discuss the latest developments in an electricity interconnection project that aims to export renewable energy from Egypt to Europe via Greece, the ministry said. The meeting between Minister Mahmoud Essmat and Dimitris Copelouzos at the ministry's headquarters in the Administrative Capital reviewed the progress of the project, which is a key part of Egypt's strategy to become a regional hub for energy exchange. 'The electricity interconnection with Europe via Greece will make Egypt a regional centre for energy exchange between the world's continents and will maximise the returns from renewable energy,' Essmat said in a statement. He added that the project is of great importance for achieving sustainable development and is part of a general strategy of electrical interconnection with neighbouring countries, with the goal of linking to the European electricity grid. The meeting covered developments in the project, which will rely on power generated from new solar and wind energy projects in Egypt. The discussions included the locations for these projects, the routes for power transmission lines, and the results of meetings between the electricity grid operators in Egypt and Greece. The two sides also discussed the procedures for tendering and European offers, as well as the need to develop and support the national grids in both countries to accommodate the new capacity for transmitting power to the European grid. Essmat described interconnection projects as 'bridges of friendship' that support sustainable development among nations. He noted that the political leadership is highly interested in such projects and that Egypt is actively participating in all regional interconnection initiatives. 'The work continues within the framework of the state's plan to maximise returns and effectively manage and utilise renewable energy sources from natural resources,' Essmat said, adding that the project is a crucial gateway for connecting Egypt and Europe.

Egyptian Banks Raise Traveller Cash Limit to USD 10,000 and Cut Fees
Egypt's major banks have raised the traveller withdrawal limit to USD 10,000, lowered credit card foreign currency fees, and lifted travel verification requirements amid improved dollar liquidity. Aug 13, 2025 Egypt's largest banks have increased the foreign currency cash withdrawal limit for travellers to USD 10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies, up from previous caps of USD 2,000 to USD 5,000 depending on the bank and card type. The new ceiling, now in place at the National Bank of Egypt, Bank Misr, and the Commercial International Bank, aligns with the maximum legal allowance for outbound travellers. Customers can withdraw the full amount before departure by presenting a valid flight ticket and visa. In a further easing of restrictions, several banks have reduced foreign currency markup fees on credit card transactions from 5% to 3%. The lower rates are already in effect at the National Bank of Egypt and CIB, while Bank Misr will implement its cut on August 13th, 2025. The Central Bank of Egypt has also removed the requirement for customers to provide proof of travel abroad when using credit cards. The measures mark a significant shift from restrictions imposed from late 2022, when foreign currency outflows were curbed to address a severe dollar shortage, the emergence of a parallel market, and sustained pressure on the pound. At the height of the controls in 2023, overseas spending caps were sharply reduced, in some cases to USD 50 to USD 100 per month for regular customers and a few hundred dollars for premium cardholders, while high markup fees were applied to discourage use.

Egypt, Hungary discuss ways to boost industrial cooperation
Chairperson of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Walid Gamal El-Din, on Tuesday received Rita Herencsár, Ambassador of Hungary to Cairo, at the Authority's headquarters in Ain Sokhna. The official visit aimed to explore avenues for cooperation and strengthen economic ties between the two sides. It forms part of SCZONE's ongoing efforts to build partnerships with development allies worldwide, enhance bilateral cooperation with friendly nations in support of sustainable development goals, and consolidate its position as a global industrial and logistics hub. Several senior Authority officials attended the meeting. Gamal El-Din outlined SCZONE's advantages, including advanced infrastructure, six seaports on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean connected to global supply chains, and four industrial zones ready to host a wide range of industries. He also highlighted direct and indirect financial incentives, sector-specific benefits, competitive energy costs, and the availability of skilled, well-trained labour—factors that make SCZONE an attractive destination for European companies seeking to expand into regional and global markets. He emphasised the importance of partnership with Hungary, particularly in sectors that add value to the Egyptian economy. He noted SCZONE's interest in localising the automotive industry, expanding data centre projects, and exploring cooperation in railway and electricity-related industries, while leveraging the technological expertise of Central and Eastern European countries. He also reviewed the diverse investments already operating in the zone from various nations. For her part, Ambassador Herencsár expressed her country's interest in exploring cooperation in manufacturing, exports, infrastructure investment, solar energy, and water management. She also proposed organising meetings between SCZONE's leadership and Hungarian companies interested in investing in the zone and participating in public-private partnership projects, which she said could open new markets for both sides. Following the meeting, the Hungarian delegation toured several SCZONE projects, including Ecopact for Industrial Development, Elsewedy Watanya, and the National Steel Fabrication Company (NSF). The visit showcased examples of existing international partnerships within the zone and the potential for further industrial integration. Gamal El-Din had previously led a promotional tour to Hungary in February 2023, holding intensive meetings in Budapest with officials from the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA) and representatives of Hungarian companies across various industrial sectors. The visit took place on the sidelines of the 4th Egyptian–Hungarian Joint Committee meetings.
