Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that India is on track to become the world's third-largest economy and hence must remain 'vigilant" about its economic interests.
'India is set to become the world's third-largest economy… therefore, India must remain vigilant about its economic interests. Our farmers, our small industries, employment for our youth… their interests are paramount for us. The government is making every effort in this direction," he said while addressing a gatheirng in Varanasi.
What's In The Opinion Piece?
It said that the Indian economy is 'alive and kicking" as the country achieved a commendable real GDP growth rate of 6.5 per cent in the fiscal year 2024–25 (FY25), with nominal GDP growth at 9.8 per cent.
The current account deficit (CAD) is projected at a mere 0.9 per cent in FY26, while the fiscal deficit is estimated at 4.4 per cent, according to a CareEdge Ratings report.
It said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has undergone a transformative economic journey with a focus on infrastructure development and digitalisation. The proliferation of digital infrastructure, including UPI and broadband connectivity, has formalised the economy, enhanced financial inclusion, and driven growth in the services sector. As of December 2024, India had an astounding total of 944.97 million broadband subscribers — 903.78 million wireless and 41.19 million wireline.
What Rahul Gandhi Said?
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had endorsed the US President's 'dead economy" remark, saying that the Republican leader is right in saying that the Indian economy is 'dead".
When asked to comment on Trump's dead economy remark, Rahul Gandhi said that he agreed with the US President. 'Yes, he is right. Everybody knows this except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact… The entire world knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. BJP has finished the economy to help Adani…" Gandhi said.
Gandhi further alleged that the BJP government has destroyed India's economic, defence and foreign policy. 'PM Modi works only for one person- Adani. This (India-US trade) deal will take place, and PM Modi will do exactly what Trump says," he said.
Trump's 25% Tariff Move
Earlier this week, the US President had announced to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty for buying Russian crude oil and military equipment.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump cited India's high tariffs, stringent non-monetary trade barriers, and continued military and energy ties with Russia as the basis for the move.
He had also criticised India's trade policies and its ties with Russia. In his post, Trump dismissed concerns over India's relationship with Moscow, stating, 'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care."

Sonia, Priyanka, other Opposition leaders protest against SIR in Parliament premises
Several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties, including Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday against the Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar, and demanded its rollback. With banners and posters against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as other opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded a rollback of the SIR as they stage their protest near Parliament's Makar Dwar. This was the tenth day of their protest with only one day gap in between on Monday when the opposition skipped their protest in view of the demise of former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren. There were two huge banners in front of the protesting MPs -- one in Hindi and the other in English -- which read 'Our Vote. Our Right. Our Fight.' Another banner carried by the protesting MPs read 'SIR - Silent Invisible Rigging'. With 'Stop SIR' placards along with posters, alleging collusion between the EC and the government, in hand, the MPs of the opposition, including those of the Congress, DMK, TMC, and Left parties, among others, participated in the protest and raised slogans. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses.

Vladimir Putin's 'daughter' resurfaces with cryptic post: ‘The man who destroyed my life'
A woman widely believed to be a daughter of Russian President Vladimir Putin has resurfaced on social media, accusing an unnamed man of 'destroying' her life. Elizaveta Krivonogikh, believed to be Russian President Vladimir Putin's illegitimate daughter.(X/@ igorsushko and File Photo/Reuters) In a post on Telegram, 22-year-old Elizaveta Krivonogikh shared a photo of herself and wrote: 'It's liberating to be able to show my face to the world again. It reminds me of who I was born to be and who destroyed my life. The man who took millions of lives and who destroyed mine,' reported The Times. According to the news outlet, while Krivonogikh did not explicitly name Putin, a German newspaper Bild that had access to the Telegram channel titled 'Art of Luiza' noted that the context strongly suggested the Russian president was the subject of her remarks. Despite the mounting media scrutiny, the Kremlin has denied any connection. In 2020, Putin's spokesperson said the president had 'never heard of her". Public attention around Elizaveta reignited last year when Russian artist Nastya Rodionova, now in exile, claimed that she had been working under the surname Rudnova at a Paris gallery exhibiting anti-war art. Rodionova publicly cut ties with the gallery, saying it was 'inadmissible' for a member of the Putin family to be associated with such a space. Who is Elizaveta Krivonogikh? Elizaveta Krivonogikh is believed to be the daughter of Vladimir Putin and Svetlana Krivonogikh, a woman who reportedly worked as a cleaner before becoming a shareholder in Bank Rossiya. Despite the Kremlin's longstanding efforts to keep Putin's private life secret, reports over the years have linked Elizaveta to the president. She previously lived a visibly luxurious life, sharing glimpses of designer clothing and private jets on social media before going largely offline after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, reported The Times. Elizaveta is reported to have graduated in 2024 from ICART, a Paris-based institution that specialises in arts and cultural management. Wealth and a link to Putin Her mother, Svetlana Krivonogikh, reportedly transitioned from working as a cleaner in St Petersburg to becoming a major shareholder in key Russian businesses. Among her assets is a significant stake in the Bank of Russia, an institution the United States has described as 'Putin's personal cashbox.' In 2020, Russian investigative outlet Proekt estimated Svetlana's net worth at approximately 7.7 billion rubles (about £74 million at the time).
