Man gets ₹26 lakh for unpaid salary without working for even a day; company loses case in court

Mint21-06-2025
An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a company to pay a man Dh110,400 ( ₹ 26 lakh) for unpaid wages. The man was hired but never allowed to start work. He filed a case asking for salary from 11 November 2024 to 7 April 2025.
His contract promised a basic salary of Dh7,200 ( ₹ 1.70 lakh) and a total monthly pay of Dh24,000 ( ₹ 5.65 lakh). But, the company kept delaying his joining date without paying him, according to the Khaleej Times.
The company's lawyer asked the court to move the case to another department. However, the court found that the delay was the employer's fault, based on salary records and contract documents.
The UAE court ruled in favour of the employee, saying wages must be paid on time as per the Labour Law. The law clearly states that a worker's salary is their right and cannot be held back unless the worker has officially agreed to it or the company has legal proof, according to the publication.
In this case, the employer claimed the worker didn't report to duty and took leave. However, the court found no proper investigation to support this claim.
The employee admitted to taking eight days off, which were deducted. The court ordered a salary payment for four months and 18 days.
In an earlier story, a Spanish government worker, Joaquín Garcia, reportedly skipped work for at least six years, maybe even 14 years, while still receiving his salary. The truth came out in 2010, when he was about to get an award for long and faithful service to the city of Cadiz.
The 69-year-old engineer had worked for the local government since 1990. In 1996, he was sent to the city's water department to oversee a sewage treatment plant.
But, according to reports, he had not shown up to work for years.

Who is Jessica Radcliffe? 23-yr-old marine trainer in the viral Orca attack video everyone's talking about

A viral TikTok clip, claiming that 23-year-old marine trainer Jessica Radcliffe being 'attacked and killed' by an orca at Pacific Blue Marine Park, has been making the rounds online. The video has sparked debate, with some viewers convinced it's genuine while others remain skeptical about its authenticity. Here's all you need to know about about the trainer and the video. The circulating video alleges that 23-year-old marine trainer Jessica Radcliffe was attacked by an orca during a live performance. The disturbing clip appears to show a woman underwater, being pulled along by a killer whale. It further claims she died 10 minutes after being rescued by staff. The video created rage on TikTok (banned in India) and Facebook. Some posts go as far as to suggest that the attack was triggered when menstrual blood mixed with the water. However, there is no credible evidence that cam prove that the incident ever occurred, and the footage appears to be AI-generated. Also an report clainmed that there is no records of a marine trainer named Jessica Radcliffe or any such incident, suggesting that she is likely a fictional character. Although this orca attack report is false, there have been previous cases where trainers were killed by orcas, most famously the Dawn Brancheau incident. In 2010, Tilikum, the orca, killed the senior trainer during a SeaWorld show in Orlando. Dawn's death was featured in the 2013 documentary Blackfish, which showed the ethics of confining large mammals, the HT report noted. A year prior to his accident, Alexis Martinez, a Spanish trainer, was killed after an orca named Keto bumped into him during a rehearsal. Meanwhile, in 1991, a Canadian trainer was also killed when three orcas dragged him underwater. (With inputs from HT,com)

Udhagamandalam: A 62-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant while he was working at a tea estate at New Hope in the O'Valley forest range in Gudalur in the Nilgiris around 9.30am on Monday. This is the second such incident in the locality in the past three days. Forest range officer C Veeramani identified the deceased as Mani, 62, a temporary worker at the Manjushree tea estate in Gudalur. He said the forest field staff had noticed the movement of a wild elephant in the area and sent SMS alerts to the local people around 7.30am. "It is likely that Mani missed the alert." Mani's body was sent to the govt hospital at Gudalur for a postmortem. The forest department has issued an initial compensation of Rs50,000 to the victim's family. The Nilgiris forest division, meanwhile, launched a toll-free number – 18004254343 – on Monday to address man-animal conflicts. Unveiled by Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary to the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, the public could contact the toll-free number to report man-animal conflicts round the clock. In recent times, locals have reported encounters with leopards and sloth bears, which stray into residential areas, causing fear and disrupting daily life. "We may receive calls from the Gudalur forest division and the MTR buffer zone as well. In such cases, we will redirect the calls to the respective forest ranges or divisions," said district forest officer S Gowtham.
