Spanish police release Diogo Jota statement shedding new light on tragic crash
The police have also said that initial tests hint that the 28-year-old Jota may have been in excess of the permitted speed limit on that particular stretch of the motorway, as per the Mirror.
Jota and his younger sibling, 26, were laid to rest on Saturday after their deaths in the early hours of Thursday morning near Zamora, Spain.
The tragedy occured shortly after Jota had wed his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, with whom he has three children. Tributes from across the world have flooded in ever since.
In what is only their second formal communication since the last week's incident on the A-52 by Zamora, close to the Portuguese border, the Civil Guard said: "The expert report is still being worked on and finalised.
"Among other things traffic police from the Zamora branch of the Civil Guard are studying the tread marked by one of the wheels of the vehicle.
"Everything is also pointing to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed on that stretch of the motorway.
'All the tests carried out for the moment point to the driver of the crash vehicle being Diogo Jota. The expert police report when it is finalised will be handed over to a court in Puebla de Sanabria.'
Liverpool's squad arrived at Kirkby for their initial pre-season training on Tuesday morning. This comes just three days after the funeral of their colleague in Portugal.
Mohamed Salah shared a moving tribute on social media saying he would struggle with the absence of Jota as the team gathered again.
"I am truly lost for words," the Egyptian star posted last week. "Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back."
Head coach Arne Slot expressed that the sense of loss is overwhelming, saying: "He was a loved one to all of us." Jurgen Klopp, who signed Jota for Liverpool in 2020, also shared his sorrow on Instagram.
The Merseyside club's summer schedule included a friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale this coming Sunday. Nevertheless, whether the game will proceed remains uncertain, with Slot due to consult with the players about their willingness to play in the fixture or not.

Bradley hails 'best week of my life' as Shamrock Rovers claim huge Euro win
Stephen Bradley's media duties finished up shortly before 11pm Irish time on Tuesday night, but the Shamrock Rovers boss still had the most important call of all to make. Despite the late hour, he was preparing to Face Time with his family and enjoy 'the best week of my life' with his loved ones, nearly 2,300km away in Dublin. Bradley had just led the Hoops to one of the great results for an Irish club in Europe - a 2-1 first-leg win away to Santa Clara, who last year finished fifth in the Portuguese top-flight. In the Sao Miguel evening heat, on the largest of the Azores islands, his side came from behind thanks to goals from wing-back Danny Grant and forward Danny Mandroiu, to inch Rovers closer to a second consecutive appearance in the league phase of the Europa Conference League. Two days earlier, Bradley's 11-year-old son Josh had completed his treatment for leukaemia. He returned to Crumlin Children's Hospital with his family to say his farewells to the staff that treated him for more than three years. Now, in the middle of the Atlantic, his ecstatic father was preparing to give him a call. 'It caps off the best week of my life,' said Bradley. 'Probably, yeah, the best week of my life, you know, in terms of Josh and then tonight. It doesn't get better than that. And then we recover and we get ready for a tough game next week.' Bradley is long enough in the business to know when to allow his emotions to sneak through. 'Yeah, you have to. You have to enjoy these moments. If I've learned anything from the journey that we've been on, it's to enjoy moments in life. That's all we really have is moments in time,' he said. 'Money, cars, houses. It doesn't mean anything at the end of the day. It's about moments in time and enjoying them. And you have to allow yourself to enjoy them. Danny Mandroiu celebrates scoring his side's second goal (Image: ©INPHO/Martin Seras Lima) 'I probably couldn't do that when I was a younger manager with less experience. But now, I've learned to enjoy these moments and more importantly, let the players enjoy these moments, because you have to. They put so much into it every day. 'Enjoy this. And then tomorrow, it's there, full focus on the second night. But tonight, we will enjoy it.' Asked if it was too late for a call home, he replied: 'No, there'll definitely be a call after this. I'll be out and I'll FaceTime the kids. They definitely were watching. So, I'll definitely have a call tonight.' Bradley, of course, did sound a note of caution, in case anyone was losing the run of themselves. 'It's half time. They will know that, we know that. We know they're a really dangerous team, and they'll show that again next week,' he said. 'But we also know in Dublin, we can be anybody. And that'll be our aim. We won't go next week with any other mindset other than to win the game. Shamrock Rovers' Daniel Mandroiu, Roberto Lopes and Daniel Cleary celebrate their sides third goal. (Image: ©INPHO/Martin Seras Lima) 'We can't go and defend against them for 90 minutes. We have to go to win the game. 'But we understand it's half time. We're experienced enough to know that we've just got to focus on the game. Enjoy tonight, these are special nights. Enjoy them as a group together.' Santa slayed as Shamrock Rovers raid the Azores for huge first-leg victory
UEFA Conference League: Santa Clara 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 A first goal in Europe for Danny Grant and another skilfully taken strike from the influential Danny Mandroiu leaves Shamrock Rovers some 90 minutes away from back-to-back qualifications for the league phase of the Conference League after a controlled, tactically astute performance in the Azores. Stephen Bradley's side did so by having to come from behind as they more than matched Santa Clara, who finished fifth in the Portuguese Primeira Liga last season, in the 24 degree heat of the Estadio Sao Miguel in Ponta Delgada. It's thus all set up for another rousing night at Tallaght Stadium in next Thursday's second leg when Rovers will hope to make the group/league phase in Europe for a third time in four years. In doing so they would also become the first Irish side to reach that stage from outside the champions path. The prize is six matches in the 36-team league phase and its guaranteed minimum €3.95 million prize fund. Rovers grossed €7.2 million from their run to the knockout round play-offs last February, losing on penalties to Norwegian side Molde. Santa Clara started six of the 17 Brazilians in their squad, including their lightning quick number 10, Gabriel Silva, who scored twice in the defeat of Irish League side Larne in the previous round. In Rovers' only change from last week's 4-0 win over Kosovars FC Ballkani, Darragh Nugent came into central midfield for the injured Connor Malley. SHOUT IT OUT LOUD: Danny Mandroiu of Shamrock Rovers celebrates after scoring his side's second goal during the UEFA Conference League Play-off Round first leg match between CD Santa Clara and Shamrock Rovers FC at the Estadio de São Miguel in Ponta Delgada, Portugal. Photo by Ben McShane/Sportsfile Far from overawed by the conditions and their opponents, Rovers showed they could stretch Santa Clara with the pace of Grant on the right and bustling centre-forward play of in-form Rory Gaffney. But just as Rovers looked to have settled well into the game, Santa Clara took the lead on 20 minutes. Having just bravely blocked a drive from Mandroiu, Sidney Lima used the full width of the big pitch to pick out Paulo Victor hogging the touchline with a cross-field ball. Silva was found from the pullback to bring a terrific one-handed save by Ed McGinty. It proved to no avail, though, as the ball dropped for Vinicius Lopes to head to the net. A short VAR check confirmed the goal. Unbowed and enjoying 55 percent possession, Rovers passed the ball with ever more confidence as the half progressed. Mandroiu worried skipper Gabriel Batista between the Santa Clara posts when drilling a shot not far wide before Hoops were deservedly level two minutes before the break. The speed of thought and touch of Mandroiu played an integral part with a clever return pass for the run of Grant. The winger skipped into the area to beat Batista with the help of a slight deflection off Rocha. Rovers survived a nervous moment four minutes into the second when Rocha poked the ball home from a Silva free kick, a VAR check confirming he was offside. Another VAR check for offside denied Rovers the lead at the other end on 57 minutes when Gaffney turned home from underneath the crossbar, skipper Roberto Lopes on his milestone 50th appearance in Europe, having headed Dylan Watts' free kick back across goal. But there was no need for any check for what proved Rovers' winner on the night when it arrived on 66 minutes. Another Watts delivery from a free kick was headed into space in the area by the tenacious Josh Honohan. Mandroiu read it perfectly, taking a delightful first touch to burst between two defenders and confidently side-foot past Batista to the corner of the net for a famous victory. Santa Clara: Batista; Lima, Rocha, Nunes; Cabral (Pires, 62), Adriano, Serginho (Ferreira, 73), Paulo Victor (Pereira, 85); Lopes (Manoel, 73), Costa (Wendel Silva, 62), Gabriel Silva. Shamrock Rovers: McGinty; Cleary, Lopes, Grace; Grant, Watts (McEneff, 89), Healy, Nugent (Barrett, 90+4), Honohan, Mandroiu (Burke, 73); Gaffney (Noonan, 73). Referee: Stefan Ebner (Austria).

Shamrock Rovers stun Santa Clara as Dannys Grant & Mandroiu put them 90 minutes away from Conference League group stage
Santa Clara finished FIFTH in the Portuguese league last season SANTA CLARA 1-2 SHAMROCK ROVERS Shamrock Rovers stun Santa Clara as Dannys Grant & Mandroiu put them 90 minutes away from Conference League group stage OH Danny Boys, the groups, the groups, are calling. Shamrock Rovers are 90 minutes away from the Conference League group stages for the second season running, and third time in four years, after a big away victory in the Azores. 2 Shamrock Rovers shocked Santa Clara in the Conference League play-off Credit: Ben McShane/Sportsfile 2 Danny Mandroiu scored the winning goal in the Azores Credit: Ben McShane/Sportsfile Danny Grant and Danny Mandroiu were both on target as the Hoops came from behind to beat Portuguese outfit Santa Clara to put them in the driving seat for the groups. It was a deserved victory for Shamrock Rovers who showed all their big game knowhow to ensure a first-leg lead. And while all that experience will mean nothing is taken for granted, the Hoops are now in a great position to secure group stage football again, and a minimum €3.695 million. Santa Clara - fifth in last season's Portuguese league - proved they can trouble Rovers at times in the Azores. But it was a first leg tie when the Hoops managed well to leave with the win, even after falling behind to Santa Clara's first real attack after 20 minutes. Having rarely threatened, Santa Clara's centre half Sidney Lima whipped a long diagonal from right to left for the flying wing back Paulo Victor racing forward. His cut back picked out Gabriel Silva whose first-time shot was brilliantly kept out by a reaction save from Ed McGinty. But the venom in Silva's effort meant he could not punch it to safety as the ball dropped inside his six-yard box where Vinicius reacted to head home. The moments after the goal were scary for Rovers who did look momentarily rattled, but they soon regrouped and seized control again. Mandriou fired narrowly wide having had a shot blocked moments before Vinicius's opener while Rory Gaffney was battling against 39-year-old defender Luis Rocha. League of Ireland mascots compete in charity race in Naas And the victories did equalise two minutes before the break when Grant started and finished a move. The Shamrock Rovers right wing back burst forward and fed Mandroiu in front of him before receiving the return pass as he drove towards the area. With the Santa Clara ill-advisedly backing off him, he reached the edge of the area and shot with his weaker left-foot that took a slight deflection off Rocha on the way in. Santa Clara came close to retaking the lead early in the second half though Rocha was correctly flagged offside when he tapped home a Gabriel Silva free. But Rovers also had a goal flagged off - with VAR also confirming - on 57 minutes when Rory Gaffney headed in after Roberto Lopes headed on a Dylan Watts free kick. Yet on 66 minutes, another Watts set-piece delivered the winning goal. The midfielder, again, clipped the ball to the far post where Josh Honohan headed the ball back into the area. And Mandroiu arrived late to control the ball with one touch to take him past two Santa Clara players before he coolly side-footed beyond goalkeeper Gabriel Batista. Santa Clara did press late looking for an equaliser, but created little bar a few long range efforts that were well off target as Rovers held firm for a famous win.
